The latest household consumption expenditure survey has yielded several interesting insights on how consumption patterns have changed over the last 11 years, how rural-urban inequality has fallen, and which states are leading consumption growth.
Economist Radhika Pandey and Deputy Editor TCA Sharad Raghavan explore the data in #MacroSutra

Roughly two weeks ago, this series was worried about drop in “salt” consumption and claimed rural consumption was collapsing. We in the comments mentioned it was misreading of data. This week this series concurs with the comments.

Why is the government reducing the mid day meal fund ? Why is the child wasting and stunting on the rise in India and cases of anemia too?

MEDICAL expenses has significantly impacted the savings of the poor in India. Limited access to affordable healthcare and high out-of-pocket expenses for medical treatments has lead to financial strain for many individuals and families, particularly those with lower incomes. This underscores the importance of improving healthcare accessibility and affordability to alleviate the burden on the economically vulnerable.

Indians are over eating due to cheap food, eating bad food loaded with sugars, bad fats, straight simple carbs, etc. Add to it no exercise 90% of Indians above age 16 either have diabetes or are insulin impaired. Furthwr Indians are Bo 1 in heart diseases. The stupid and lazy Indian wants free medical services, free or very low cost medicines, etc. Yoy are responsible for your health, not govt.

Haryana has the highest per capita among large states. It is bound to clock a lower consumption growth rate now. Punjab rural households consume a large part of their own produce. Share of expenditure on Education decreasing is indeed a puzzle. I wonder if more people are now moving into vocational streams.

As I always admire this Pair whose presentation is worthy to listen about Indian Economics. On this subject matter Sr. Journalist in Cut the Clutter has presented somedays back. Reforms are showing results across States in India. Food consumption changed and pattern of change shows growth in non-food items. If Government works seriously to modify BHARAT, we all should join to change our country to a Upper Middle Class Countrry by another decade. Jai Ho.🎉🎉❤❤

Can someone explain to me how did share of expenditure fall as they were saying? Because in the table for rural it shows 49 to 124 and 181 ro 373 for urban, isnt that an increase?

What would be interesting is comparison of gst numbers across sectors against consumption patterns.. this can indicate which sectors do not file gst.. Perishable non-counter based sales are expected to be outside this except for quick commerce adoption in specific urban areas.. those things will need to be adjusted in this analysis

One thing possibly explaining reduced consumption of education is lower number of children per household.

@@Kim-ej2xm That is a good point. We need to account for all the confounding variables. Obviously need data at much higher granularity than what we have right now.

The definition of Rural vis-a-vis Urban though may be clear in the discussion or survey , it is understood that 60% of India is Urban and 40% is Rural ( Govt. data. Rural is 68%) , For certain obvious purposes like property tax, budgets allocation etc. Semi-Urban areas get tagged as Rural . Essentially what you consider Rural Consumption, is Semi-Urban consumption. Both Data and Hypothesis is incorrect. Again the definition of processed food is way too broad based even Masala Powder to Chakli/Murukku is processed and is consumed well even in Rural areas but it does not mean in the rural areas Swiggy and Zomato are getting popular, It is not feasible for farmer to pay 50 Rs as delivery charge. He will rather drive it himself . Also Education spending is vast area since lot of youtube videos are available and things can be done at home with laptop or mobile. Conclusion of this discussion is wrong as the Hypothesis and Data is wrong. Better data needs to be collated.

Survey says rural consumption has grown at faster rate and that households are spending less on food. However, could it not be due to free grains being supplied to 80 cr citizens, which further needs to be seen keeping two points in view, first it has freed citizens to spend less on food and second beneficiaries of free grains scheme largely reside in rural areas hence the impact is larger there compared to urban areas. Impact of expenditure saved from renting dwellings due to Awaas Yojana may have changed consumption pattern. Yes, I’m seeing domestic workers and low income households too are celebrating birthdays eating out, and even in restaurants or ordering cooked or processed foodstuffs from Zomato etc.

Question addressed to The Print: question on the projects that Indian govt announces (Central and state). Is there an official announcement of the source of funds for these projects i.e. can we trace the source of funds that will sponsor these projects. I am asking as an interested citizen. Not to provoke anyone!

I think their sampling is bias to show them in good light even though their ill-conceived and hasty implementation policy hurt informal sector and that is why household saving is low and the consumption is tepid

How are the two different from a practical standpoint? For an average case it won't matter. Of course, there will be some outliers but those would be special groups with very specific nuances.
