Guys, Guyana, Trinidad, Suriname have significant Indian populations. They were brought to these countries as indentured laborers from 1845 to 1917. They have retained a lot of their original culture. A large portion is still hindu and muslim. As a matter of fact the Indians in Suriname are still able to speak their original Bhogpuri tongue. This is because the colonial power in Suriname was the Dutch and the policy of the Dutch unexpectedly allowed the Indians there to continue to speak and so keep the language. The British on the other hand implemented policies that caused the Indians to lose their language within 100 years.

Hello, The majority ethnic people in Guyana are of Indian descent. Arrived on 05.05 .1838.. they were indentured immigrants on sugar plantations. They maintained their Indian culture, and the majority are Hindus. They have a very strong affection for Baharat (India). Please, "you tube" Guyanese Indians . Many people from India in USA , Canada ,UK are amazed to find out the people from Guyana ,Trinidad &Suriname are very strong Hindus.

Raman, the Indians in Guyana are decendants of those who came from UP and Bihar to work in the sugar industry just like Mauritius and Fiji.

After the brit parliament banned slavery and paid compensation to slave owners the way forward to beat the ban was called indentured labourers. The name changed but the idea was the same.

In Trinidad, slaves worked for free and had to fend for theremselves when slavery was done. The indentured labourers were paid and when their contracts were completed, they were offered the choice of either a return passage to India or free land in Trinidad (which is why many of them own land, here).

one thing I can say marring some one from a different tribe is much better than marring some one from your own country and tribe you never look at each other as strangers and lovers but as brothers and sisters.that is the reason why I never look for a Indian Girl but a other tribe

The British brought the Indians from India to Guyana as indentured servants, not business. The Indians in Guyana suffered under British rule, similar to Trinidad.

Listening to the two of you; I'm not sure what to think. Do people living in 'India" not know of the 100's of thousands of Indians who left and went to other countries. Sikhs have been living in Canada since the 1900. They (Indians) still live in ( British) Guyana, Dutch Guiana, French Guiana, since the 1800's. Fiji. Kenya. And they still think of themselves as Indians.

The three Guianas were: British Guiana, Dutch Guiana, and French Guyana. Correction-you said French Guinea. Guinea I believe is in Africa. After independence British Guiana was renamed Guyana. People mistakenly say Ghuy…ana, rather than Guy…ana. The “Guy” sounds the same as “guy” in: That guy there.

What do you mean that indo Guyanese don't consider themselves Indian.. We call ourselves Indian and the other ethnic groups call us Indians.. Don't you that is for a reason? We eat, sleep, speak, dance ,sing, dress, think and work Indian.. In fact the last Indian high commissioner to Guyana mentioned that some practice of Hinduism is intact and has not evolved as it was in some parts of India... After 12 to 14 long working days our fore parents use to gather under large trees at night discussing Ramayan and Gita and song bhajans and kirtans and played our traditional Indian instruments... Don't make that mistake, " we are proud Indians"
