Disney Pixar's Inside Out 2 features a final scene with Anxiety as Riley goes through an anxiety attack. It's one of the hardest scenes in Inside Out 2 to watch, but also an essential part that audiences resonate with. What makes this anxiety attack so powerful? How did Pixar and Anxiety voice actress Maya Hawke pull it off?

The anxiety attack scene was easily the most powerful scene of the film, along with “I’m Not Good Enough,” and it’s insane to see just how much time and effort went into executing it perfectly. It’s amazing to see studios try so hard to correctly portray mental health in a meaningful manner, especially in child-friendly media, in which that sort of stuff tends to get overlooked, despite the fact so many go through it.

This was easily the most intense part for me that had me shed tears, especially when Anxiety shed one herself. I had one anxiety attack, and it was absolutely horrible. My blood pressure went up and I was trembling and listless, and I could barely sleep that night. I was full of turmoil that took months to recover from. As a person with severe anxiety and trauma, this scene was way too realistic. I saw the film on Sunday, and that scene had me close to tears. The way Pixar portrays anxiety attacks is honestly amazing. I have panic/anxiety attacks way too often, and this film really made me feel seen. I honestly think that it’s good that they have more of this in the media, and the accuracy of showing what people like me go through. Some people need to know that we’re not “exaggerating” or “overreacting”, and that even things that may seem small have a bigger impact on people with anxiety/trauma. I honestly love Disney and Pixar and think their films are beautiful. I’m so glad they can see what we go through.

If I had a nickel for every time an animated film in the 2020s featured a main character going through an anxiety/panic attack and said film was a sequel released about a decade after the original, I’d have two nickels (this and Puss in Boots The Last Wish). Seriously though, I loved this climax. I’ve been on medication for anxiety for years now and can definitely relate to what Riley was going through in that moment. Sometimes it does feel like your brain is a tornado and there’s a million thoughts and you don’t know where you are. And then all the emotions gathered around the new Sense of Self and Riley was able to calm herself down to relax in self-acceptance and (literal) joy!…I…have no words… I’m getting emotional just thinking about it. It was kinda incredible to see. I love this movie.

i’m so glad this movie was made just so that my family can really see how much an anxiety attack affected me back then. i believe there are different ways anxiety triggers people. i didn’t get them from thinking i wasn’t good enough but because i felt like i had no purpose on earth and that my life would lead to nothing. It’s scary because you feel vulnerable in any kind of anxiety attack but i want everyone to know that you always have a place in this world even when it seems like it’s going against that. I felt small in this infinite universe for 3 years but with all my suffering i came to realize that we all live in our own worlds in ourselves. Stay Strong People !

The way Anxiety was just stuck there inside the middle of the manic tornado surrounding her. With No other emotion able to touch her. Standing completely motionless with a blank stare. As one tear rolled down her terrified face. I don’t know how Pixar did it, but they truly captured the inside feeling of an anxiety/panic attack. Bravo

They nailed this scene, especially with the movement. Moving a million miles a second but also paralyzed and the performance from the actress made it that much better.

This scene reminded me of a time when I was in high school. A spoiled brat caused a loud scream and caused me to have an anxiety attack. One day, she took it too far and got me kicked out of theater class.

This scene really got me; I was tensed up throughout the whole scene and I was like "Is she gonna have a heart attack?" And that one sentence, "I'm not good enough," was painfully relatable for me Definitely one of the most intense scenes in any animated movie I've seen. And now that I've seen an accurate representation of an anxiety attack, I think I may have had a small one a month ago...

The fact that this took 25 meeting to make a scene like that is mind boggling. Pixar truly made an awesome comeback. Recently animated movies in the 2020 decade like Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Paw Patrol: The Movie and The Spider Within: A Spider-Verse short film have done animated panic attacks that were accurate (Velma does NOT count!), now we’ve got Inside Out 2 depicting realistic panic attacks like this. Pixar has truly nailed it. One of my favorite sequels alongside Toy Story 2.

I loved this scene. I had an anxiety attack a couple months ago, and it was the worst ever humanly possible. I had no idea you could get sick for days afterwards, I could barely walk, move, eat, etc. It was hell. The scene was relatable to me but it was on a smaller scale and seemed to go away for Riley rather quickly, but I’m glad there’s representation for anxiety attacks now in Pixar.

I really loved how they depicted it internally, with Anxiety progressively speeding up more and more, constantly micromanaging every aspect of the Control Panel, until she’s moving *so fast* that the only point that she’s fully visible in the sheer whirlwind of her motion is a still image of herself, frozen in fear just like Riley is.

I have bad anxiety problems so when I heard about this scene I had to see it for myself. The vibrating backgrounds detail was spot on because when you’re of the verge of the attack, at least in my experience, your head will have an almost vibrating sensation until it hurts. Maybe it’s just me, but I usually end up actually having an almost meltdown in the middle of the attack with uncontrollable crying and before I can stop it all of a sudden I can’t breathe and my eyes won’t focus. So yes, very good portrayal of an anxiety attack. I approve.👍

I usually just cry unconsolably during a panic attack and think about all the things that are wrong in my life during a panic attack. Anxiety frantically trying to solve everything is what I relate to. It's really an separate state of mind where I truly believe that life will never get better, and everything is falling apart. The truth is that most of the time there is a way out, and if there isn't worrying about it solves nothing. You generally are very capable of dealing with what's hhappening and we all have to be compassionate towards ourselves. Nowadays, my mind has the anxiety, but joy puts up a stronger fight delivering optimistic projections of the future. I loved this movie as someone who had a panic attack everyday when I was Riley's age.

The way they captured how anxiety’s sense of self is “I’m not good enough” really hit hard as for most of my life I’ve lived by that. For a grown man who has anxiety and depression and has experienced panic attacks, and others such as difficulty in breathing, restlessness, excessive yawning, palpitations, chest pains, headaches, the fear of impending death, this scene was so powerful I teared up plus the echoes of being a good person and not being good enough in the back of the head really hits on the feels.

That scene hit me really hard when seeing the movie cause the thought process itself is so stress inducing when it comes to situations like what happened with Riley near the end of the movie and for me, I sometimes have that feeling when it comes to certain situations and have a lot of self doubt about myself whenever it comes to situations like trying to be social and giving into peer pressure just to make certain people happy about something that I did that I really didn't want to and it would make me feel depressed

Anxiety being based off electricity is incredibly accurate. When I have an anxiety attack it really does feel like my brain is generating an unstable amount of electricity that uncomfortably travels throughout the rest of my body, especially my heart. I knew there was going to be a big anxiety attack scene but I didn’t think it would be this terrifyingly realistic and powerful. After all these years Pixar still never fails to impress me.
