How Intellectual Property Powers Economic Growth: David P. MIranda at TEDxAlbany 2011

David P. Miranda is an Intellectual Property lawyer and Partner with Heslin Rothenberg Farley & Mesiti PC in Albany, New York. He will be discussing the region's opportunities and potentials for economic growth through the pursuit and commercialization of Intellectual Property. Intellectual property is the fuel that powers economic growth and prosperity. The key to a region's success is its ability to develop, harness, protect and commercialize its cumulative and collaborative imagination and innovation. Mr. Miranda's law practice involves litigation of patent, copyright and trademark matters throughout the country. He has served as an arbitrator of intellectual property law disputes with the American Arbitration Association, and National Arbitration Forum and has rendered decisions regarding disputes involving such famous trademarks as McDonald's, Amazon.com, Bausch & Lomb, Target, 3M, US News, Citigroup, and ChevronTexaco. Since 2007, Mr. Miranda has been selected as a "Super Lawyer' in the area of Intellectual Property Litigation by the publication Law & Politics. In addition to his law practice Mr. Miranda has served as President of the Albany County Bar Association, and currently serves as Secretary of the New York State Bar Association and on the Board of Directors of the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce.

Intellectual property should power economic growth for myself. Non compensation, plagarism, attempts of defamation of character in effort to thrawt my vast potential & attempt to prevent myself for cashing in on my own wealth. The references to "our region" are to Albany, NY and upstate NY, both areas suffering from economic depression and recovering from natural disasters. The TED talk in question was obviously intended for Albany, NY audience, probably involved with NY's recent regional competition for economic development funds. David is addressing tech development in the Albany region.

How stupid! The fact that companies get $ from patents doesn't mean the system is good and powers economic growth. It could be very well the contrary: it is expensive and limits innovation & creativity.

Intellectual property is just monopoly. You're not "protecting creators" you are protecting profits from a company that is afraid of competition. Ideas belong to humanity. Sharing or copying ideas is how societies develop. Ideas belong to all. And if you need to use the government to prevent others from improving your idea, then you don't deserve that profit. Imagine if the weel was patented? Combustion engine, or physics concepts? Imagine if calculus was intellectual property hahahaha. Intelectual property stagnate progress and is to rob humanity future.
