Twenty years ago, US forces with the UK and other allies invaded Iraq in order to oust dictator Saddam Hussein.
It was part of what the US called its “War on Terror”, begun by then President George W Bush after the 9/11 terror attack in 2001.
The BBC's Jeremy Bowen explains how the invasion sparked two decades of chaos and violence in the country.

@@rammingspeed5217 Putin's 2007 Munich speech takes issue with US/NATO regime change wars of aggression. With absolute indifference and a sense of impunity the US (2008) was determined on bringing Ukraine into NATO despite significant opposition in Western European nations the majority of Ukrainians opposed to the idea. That year, Lavrov privately expressed concern that Ukraine could descend into civil war - which is what happened in 2014. Also, Bill Burns (now head of CIA) privately warned that such a move was the "brightest of red lines" for the Russian political class, not only Putin. The likes of Victoria Nuland and John McCain knew full well they were provoking war with Russia.

You know why the BBC is now saying the Iraq invasion is wrong ? It is only because of the Ukraine war. The BBC knows the non-western world supports Russia and does not buy the western claim that it champions a 'rules based international order'. The Iraq war impacted western credibility in the non-west but its effect is only realised by the west 20 years later - because the west cannot garner support for its war in Ukraine, and its efforts to isolate Russia. The west has the sinking feeling that Russia has ended the western 'rules based international order' for good, and the world is moving into a new post-western order.

They've used their tragedy to masterfully gaslit the whole world that the war was necessary, played with the "us vs them" mentality. West vs Arab. White vs Minorities. Christian vs Muslim. All sides overwhelmingly stacked in the USA's favor. With Russia they picked Ukraine, which is, lets be frank, overwhelmingly white, christian and west leaning. so that's why condemnation is harsher. Some countries NEED strongmen like Saddam, Assad and Sisi to keep the lid on all the factions who only want to see their group wielding power over all the others. Democracy doesn’t work when everyone just votes for their team regardless of policies. Look at South Africa, the ANC have been in power since 1994, and have run the country into the ground, but their followers will keep voting for them even as they die of thirst.

To see Saddam as a positive force is wrong. Saddam gassed Kurdish people, killed many of his own people and fought wars with Iran and Kuwait. Many Iraqis suffered greatly under his rule, as did Kuwaitis during his illegal invasion. The Iraq war caused huge suffering, but that doesn't make Saddam a good thing.

Iraqi writer Ali Al Wardi (علي الوردي) writes: Sectarianism is not a religion, rather it is a kind of tribal affiliation to a certain sect or person, and when a sectarian individual becomes fanatic for his sect, he does not care about the moral or spiritual principles in the sect. Because of his loyalty to his group and hostility to others, he looks at his sect as the Bedouin looks at his tribe"

I would also point out that Blair also set in motion policies and attitudes that have made British politics and government sectarian in nature. Like in Iraq they have created a system in which a common national identity is secondary to pursuing the ethno-religious interests of one’s own group.
