How Is A Jury Selected In A Canadian Criminal Case?

I really want to sit on a jury. Everyone tells me that they try to get out of it but I actually want to experience it.

I got called for jury duty three times so far here in Ontario. Once when I was 18 just months after getting to vote for the first time. Since I was a student at the time I got off. The second time I only had to fill in a survey and they didn't call me/contact me after that. The three-time I ended up having to go to the courthouse, got picked as the second alternate for a jury case about a sexual assault which at the time was fairly well known in the media (obviously I avoided all types of media during that time). Thankfully, after only a few hours, of officially being on the jury the judge removed me since I wasn't needed. Needless to say, I was very happy to be removed from that case.

I was called but not selected for jury duty earlier this year in B.C. The judge was as throughful as you would expect and they were very careful with the jurors they selected. I was troubled by some aspects of the case (don't ask...), and am not sure if I would have been happy to have been selected.

Hello. At what stage entering the building would you have to show government issued identification? If children or an adult with a disability are accompanying the individual summoned is there a point in which they would not be allowed to proceed forward and be left unaccompanied?

I came here because I got summons in the mail today. This is my 2nd time to receive such, first was years ago where I sat in the jury. It was an eye-opening experience for me, my critical-thinking skills were really honed, lol!!! I learned in courts that evidence played major role here and one has to set aside emotions. Emotions don't work here, haha!!! So I'll just wait and see what are the odds of getting selected for the second time. Sitting in the jury is NOT a cool experience because it can either break or make you. The jurors had the option to undergo post-verdict debriefing but I chose to go on with my life as normal as possible.

In my life, I only know 2 people summoned for jury duty. 1 for jury duty once, and the other for jury duty 3 times. Yet neither of them ever served on the jury. Getting on a jury is like a 1 in 10,000 chance.

I got summoned twice and got selected both times. I'm not sure if it was that unlikely there were about 300 people in the room and they picked juries for 5 trials so that's like 25% as I believe they also select 3 alternate jurors for each trial. I enjoyed the experience and would recommend it. I'm also not sure the selection process was completely random as with the juries I was on about 80-90% of the people were either civil servants or retired so I got the feeling that there maybe some bias in selecting people who won't suffer any financial hardship from it.

@@andycap8469 i considered it as special selection during covid. We were like 140+ in 2 separate rooms. There’s a mic and a projector that will show the room where the judges are. And then when selected, someone has to communicate to their room if they’re present and coming to the room. 3 cases, but I dunno what happened to the third one. It just resolved during the selection i guess. Didn’t get selected, so all of us went home. What’s different is that my friend signed before letting you go pre covid while me and the people didn’t get selected didn’t sign anything. Thank gosh it’s like 3 hours

whats the rights of jury in Canada? can we acquit for own personal reasons? jury nullification?

Probably. If the room is private the jury can do whatever the hell they all agree too in reality, even if the laws are against it.

Better to dress up. Nice slacks or skirt and a blouse or dress shirt. It’s an institution that deserves respect and dignity and taking the extra time and trouble to be well presented.

I'm watching this because I have been called for jury duty on January 6, 2022. Third time getting a notice, other two times I was told via email didn't have to go. Will be interesting if I do get to go. Merry Christmas to everyone!

I just got summons for jury duty and look up what that all entails. No wonder people try to get out of it.Who can afford mentally and financially to take time off work? See the crime that someone has committed and only get Paid essentially nothing when the lawyers are getting paid hundreds of dollars an hour
