In this op-ed video, Osama Gaweesh, the editor-in-chief of Egypt Watch, discusses how Egypt has changed in the last 10 years under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and how he has transformed the country into a “tightly controlled autocracy marked by widespread repression and economic struggles”.
Gaweesh addresses the deteriorating human rights situation, the stifling of the media, the struggling economy and issues facing the education and health sectors. He also highlights Egypt’s security threats, including Israel's control over the Rafah crossing, the violation of the Camp David Accords, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the influence of Ibrahim al-Organi, a close associate of Sisi and his son, leads armed militias in Sinai and possesses the resources, influence and economic ties with Gulf states to emulate Hemeti's actions in Sudan.
