In Japanese, Naomi is not pronounced the same in English. The “a” portion is pronounced like the “a” in “father.” Besides the comedian you pictured, another famous Naomi of Japanese descent is tennis star Naomi Osaka. Though you say Naomi is unisex in Japan, I haven’t seen many any men named that yet... it’s mostly a female name. And the kanji you showed for the name is not universal. It’s possible to have different kanji (thus with different meanings to the name) with the same pronunciation or even be kanji-less (just hiragana, meaning there is no meaning to the name). And I surprised to hear there were Jews in Japan... I thought you had to be born into Judaism. In any case, Japan is fairly tolerant of different religions.... only, the majority of the population is not very religious (though most follow either Buddhist or Shinto rites or conventions for things like weddings and funerals).

Yeah you couldn't explain it better. Especially noteworthy is the kanj in the vid 直美 is basically guaranteed to be a female name. If a person in Japan has a name that ends in 美 they are more or less guaranteed to be a girl, and that's why Naomi in Japan is a female's name. Only reason why it could possibly be a male name is due to the nature of kanji, and that 美 isn't the only kanji that can be the "mi" sound, from which now it could possibly be a boy's name just because of that. Regardless Naomi is female name in Japan. As for Judaism, I have basically no idea how it is in Japan, but I can say that in Japan the 3rd most popular religion is Christianity, especially when you go further south toward Kyushu.

In Japan, you can practically create names. Of course there are common names, but as long as you can write it down with the syllables, it's okay. Also, if you can write it down with their syllables, then there's a good chance that you will find a kanji for that name as well. So I'm not really convinced that Naomi was an original name in Japan. It seems more likely for me that Japanese people heard the name Naomi a few centuries ago and they wrote it down in Japanese to use it as a name there. There are a lot of Sara, Marie, Anna, Karen, etc. as well in Japan.

But the meaning is completely different. Japanese Aya 彩 means 'coloring' while Arabic ayah means 'verse in holy scripture'

First famous Naomi I thought of is Naomi Shemer, an iconic Israeli songwriter. Also I'm quite curious how popular the name is in Israel and Japan, respectively.

In Israel it considered old name/ orthodox nane- Like many bibical names. As a Israeli myself, I never seen a young female named Naomi which is not orthodox.

There was an American children's television show from the early '70s which featured a recurring parody of soap operas that always ended in the line "And...what about Naomi?", which was actually referring to the mother of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal.

There appears to have been a proliferation of this name in Japan during the 60s. For example, here are some of the famous Japanese born between 1960-1969: Naomi Akimoto, Naomi Kawase, Naomi Yang, Naomi Tokashiki, Naomi Hoshikawa, Naomi Matsumoto, Naomi Takewaki, Naomi Higuchi, Naomi Sekido, Naomi Yamamoto.

Up until 1940-1950's somewhere top ten female names all ended in -ko (-子) with few exceptions. After the war naming conventions changed much, so it doesn't surprise me to see the rise of the name in the 60's.

My friend's daughter is Naomi. She's 11 or 12. As far as twin names, I knew siblings (not twins) named Don and Dawn. It was hugely confusing! Oh yeah. I'm a Patreon. As a result, I'm "Patreon Saint of the Netherlands."

Naomi Osaka...the Hatian Japanese Tennis champion. The Naomis I know tend to go by Omi. Wonder if Omi means anything on it's own?
@atsukorichards16754 жыл бұрын
In Japanese, it depends on what Kanji are used with the names for almost all Kanji has meanings. Omi as a nickname for Naomi cannot be, because the name is made either 2 or 3 letters like Nao-mi (直美/尚美) or Na-o-mi (奈緒美). About Omi, there is a name, Oumi (近江/おうみ), as an old name for Shiga Prefecture, with a long vowel O, meaning Near Harbour.

Indeed, the name Naomi has its origins in the Hebrew book of Ruth, but *technically*, Naomi is actually not the name of a Hebrew person, but a Moabite (Naomi was a Moabitess and the mother-in-law of Ruth, who was herself a Jewess who married a Moabite man). That having been said, I'm sure that Naomi existed as a girl's name in Hebrew and other neighbouring nations.
