John is also a hugely popular name in the christian world, but it also comes from hebrew. Hebrew names are very very popular in european languages, and you don't have to be jewish to have a hebrew name. In fact, I won't be surprised if most of the popular names in english come from hebrew. For example, basically every name that starts with a J in english is from hebrew.

Hi, thanks for the video. There's actually an Israeli song from the 70's called "I dream of Naomi", or in Hebrew: "אני חולם על נעמי". This song participated in a music contest in Japan and was actually quite successful, to the point the band released a Japanese version of it. I encourage you to listen to it, it's great. I don't know, maybe that's the missing link that connects the Hebrew name to Japan..

Well what you missed perhaps, is that there is strong evidence that in ancient times Jewish diaspora migrated to Japan, so the traditional use of the name “Naomi” in Japan could very well have a Hebrew origin. The parallels in traditions, customs, and language are striking, as is DNA evidence. Even the older form of the Japanese written language katakana closely resembles Phoenician Paleo Hebrew. www2.biglobe.ne.jp/~remnant/isracame.htm

In Japanese, Naomi is not pronounced the same in English. The “a” portion is pronounced like the “a” in “father.” Besides the comedian you pictured, another famous Naomi of Japanese descent is tennis star Naomi Osaka. Though you say Naomi is unisex in Japan, I haven’t seen many any men named that yet... it’s mostly a female name. And the kanji you showed for the name is not universal. It’s possible to have different kanji (thus with different meanings to the name) with the same pronunciation or even be kanji-less (just hiragana, meaning there is no meaning to the name). And I surprised to hear there were Jews in Japan... I thought you had to be born into Judaism. In any case, Japan is fairly tolerant of different religions.... only, the majority of the population is not very religious (though most follow either Buddhist or Shinto rites or conventions for things like weddings and funerals).

Yeah you couldn't explain it better. Especially noteworthy is the kanj in the vid 直美 is basically guaranteed to be a female name. If a person in Japan has a name that ends in 美 they are more or less guaranteed to be a girl, and that's why Naomi in Japan is a female's name. Only reason why it could possibly be a male name is due to the nature of kanji, and that 美 isn't the only kanji that can be the "mi" sound, from which now it could possibly be a boy's name just because of that. Regardless Naomi is female name in Japan. As for Judaism, I have basically no idea how it is in Japan, but I can say that in Japan the 3rd most popular religion is Christianity, especially when you go further south toward Kyushu.

In Japan, you can practically create names. Of course there are common names, but as long as you can write it down with the syllables, it's okay. Also, if you can write it down with their syllables, then there's a good chance that you will find a kanji for that name as well. So I'm not really convinced that Naomi was an original name in Japan. It seems more likely for me that Japanese people heard the name Naomi a few centuries ago and they wrote it down in Japanese to use it as a name there. There are a lot of Sara, Marie, Anna, Karen, etc. as well in Japan.

However, there's another Israeli name which is very popular and close to Naomi in both meaning and sound, that name being Naama (pronounced with an accent on the ma syllable). It also appears in the bible as a woman's name, but I don't know if there's a deeper connection between the names' origins. If you want to read my comment, my name is Roee Sinai.

“What About Naomi?” So this Love of Chair sketch was from a show called the Electric Company that was on PBS. It was a show aimed at elementary school students who were learning to read. Same producers as Sesame Street. I think the sketch went on for the entire run of the show in the 70s. The Naomi that is referenced at the end of every single one of the sketches is actually the mother of Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ23nnibeNOFppI Also, my grandmother’s middle name was Naomi.

As a native Jewish and Israeli, Most women that have this name, are not young. Like many bibical names, they are not given anymore for newborn Israeli babies. But the name is still common for others babies- to orthodox Jews. But you won't see the name for non-orthodox babies most of the time.

I'm Jewish and have only met one Jewish person named Naomi. I'm also reasonably certain that it's just a coincidence that the Japanese name appears and sounds the same in English. On the other hand, in the Asian gallery in the Royal Ontario Museum, they have an old Torah scroll that was found in China, so who knows?

But Chinese pronunciation for 直美 is Zhimei, not Naomi like Japanese. So Japanese Naomi and Hebrew Biblical Naomi are just coincidental homophones.

For example, here are some of the famous Japanese born between 1960-1969: Naomi Akimoto, Naomi Kawase, Naomi Yang, Naomi Tokashiki, Naomi Hoshikawa, Naomi Matsumoto, Naomi Takewaki, Naomi Higuchi, Naomi Sekido, Naomi Yamamoto.

In Japanese, it depends on what Kanji are used with the names for almost all Kanji has meanings. Omi as a nickname for Naomi cannot be, because the name is made either 2 or 3 letters like Nao-mi (直美/尚美) or Na-o-mi (奈緒美). About Omi, there is a name, Oumi (近江/おうみ), as an old name for Shiga Prefecture, with a long vowel O, meaning Near Harbour.

Indeed, the name Naomi has its origins in the Hebrew book of Ruth, but *technically*, Naomi is actually not the name of a Hebrew person, but a Moabite (Naomi was a Moabitess and the mother-in-law of Ruth, who was herself a Jewess who married a Moabite man). That having been said, I'm sure that Naomi existed as a girl's name in Hebrew and other neighbouring nations.
