As a schoolteacher I'd like to chine in- Some parents dont want to choose a popular name because it ends up negating the point of having a name. Instead of identifying a specific person when someone says it, common names often end up being discarded. A "John" has to be called "John G." To tell him apart from John M. Olivia goes by her middle name "Ann" because there are so many Olivias. It certainly causes a lot of problems at school, from just mixing kids up daily, to the "good" Olivia getting "bad" Olivia's sternly worded reprimands from the principal. It's worse when the last name is often common. There may be 5 "Juan Rodriguez" at one school.

This! At School, I was one of 4 people in my class with my first name, 3 of which had the same middle name. The whole Name + Last Name initial thing did my head in. It's like you go from being a person to a number. Even as an adult, working in a company with less than 70 employees, I've got 2 Colleagues with wives of the same name & someone with an alternate version of my name. It gets very confusing.... Not to mention getting an email address that's suitable for resumes with a common first name & last name is a nightmare. Conversely, my sister has a beautiful, unique name. She was named for my Grandfathers on both sides, with feminine versions of their names. In my 27 years I've only met 2 other people with her name, and no-one with her middle name. I may be jealous...

when I was in grade school there were 5 girls with the same name they were constantly trying to assert their own identity onto the consciences of the class and would absolutely hate it if you got them confused with one of the other girls. imagine spending your whole school life fighting to be recognized as a distinctive individual and not just another "your name" this is why parents who are smart know not to chose a very popular name. What's funny is in name explains video titled "Why Do We Judge People By Their Name?" he talked about how someone's name can affect their development I'm surprised he didn't make the correlation with this. (note that I already posted a variation of this comment under Patricks (name explained) comment to hopefully let him see it and understand why this is a problem I'm posting it here to let people who stumbled across Kittydreamz86 post read about this problem from the perspective of a school teacher a person personally effected and someone who was a passive observer)

The musical “West Side Story” by Leonard Bernstein is a beautiful classic of American theater, but there is one small problem with it. In the balcony scene, Tony stands outside an apartment building in the Puerto Rican neighborhood, facing dozens of apartment balconies, and calls out “Maria!” But ONLY ONE girl comes to her balcony???

I mean how does that not draw the attention of all the inhabitance of the building.lmao

I would definitely shy away from an extremely common name, particularly if your last name is also very common. Having a common name is a problem I know well. I once worked at a place where 5 people had the same name on one shift. Not to mention the problems that can come with having the same name as, for instance, a felon who lives on the same street as you. As much as you might like it, it does come with a number of logistical hurdles that you can't just ignore.

I also hold the position of "I really like , but it's too popular, so I can't use it." It's not about what other people think, but the purpose of a name. It's meant to be an identifier, and thus should be reasonably unique. It literally defeats the purpose of even having a name if everyone else on earth has the same name. So the same logic holds that the more popular a name is, the less useful it is. Now, I think there's a balance such that not everyone has a completely unique (i.e. made up) name. It's useful if people can recognize the name, and even more useful still if people can recognize a single individual -from- that name. Sure, we have last names that help, but it's better to only need one name. I have greatly appreciated that setup myself, having a name that everyone is familiar with and yet almost no one has. So, I just think first names should be more identifiable than having 4 people in the same class with the same name.

I have a grandson named Oliver. When I asked his father, a 'skater', why he'd chosen the name, he told me there is a move in skateboarding called the 'ollie', and he wanted to be able to call his son Ollie. The funny thing is, I don't think he realised that his great grandmother (one of your countrywomen, Patrick, from Hampshire) was named Olive, and was called Ollie by her husband and friends. So, in an odd way, my grandson is named for my grandmother.

If you think there are going to be four people in the class with that name, that's what puts you off. There were four Sarah's out of 15 in my primary class, and four Patrick's in college. We had to come up with Pa, Pat, Paddy and Patrick to distinguish, but usually you get reduced to a physical trait, and that can get potentially bullying, and at the least you are blended into the crowd. You can deal with one other person having your name, but four out of fifteen girls called Sarah was just ridiculous

I’m of the boomer generation and there were always 2-4 other Cathys of the many variations of Catherine. I was usually “Cathy in the back” (of the classroom). Two of good friends were Cathys. Even now, I teach crafts class for blind crafters and there are two Cathys. My daughter died (April 2019), but she was the other craft leader ... she had only a tiny bit of peripheral vision in one eye and none in the other. My point is, people can’t see you so you’re constantly identifying yourself before you speak or when you enter a room, so I became “Cathy, Laura’s Mom”. I’m keeping that name, even though my daughter died. She was one of four family deaths in one year ... all just before covid thankfully. I’ll leave you with the last thing LAURA said at my moms service a month before Laura died ... BEE KIND 💕🐝 oh ps... I thought I was giving my daughter a less common name, but there turned out to be a lot of variations of her name in her class. So just go ahead and pick and name that has some meaning or strikes you right.

I totally get why someone does not want to pick a popular name. Seeing how I am named Michael which has been in the top 10 names in USA for over 50 years. The popularity of it has always been an annoyance of mine, when I was in 2nd grade I was one of seven boys named Michael in class. Two of my friends growing up were named Michael (one of them even has the same birthday as me). My entire life the name has cause confusion, which is why I don't even respond if I hear the name Michael in public, since I assume they are trying to talk to someone else. This experience has made me vow to never name my future children something popular.

For a long time my name was the most popular boys name, and everywhere I go someone will call out "Hey Mike" I'll turn around and there talking to someone else. Or every group I'm involved with there will be multiple Mikes . When someone says my name they'll say not you the other Mike. So having a less popular name is a good thing. It's your kids name not yours so just because you like it doesn't mean you should pick it for your kids.

For example, in my school year there was only one Oliver (myself), but there were three Olivers in the year below, and similar amounts in the years below that. I was actually named Oliver with the intention of it being meant as a mix of peace, sustenance and prosperity. I think it's a shame that in the English-speaking world children are almost always given names without the meaning of their name considered.

I like the name Oliver, it wounds nice, though it feels a bit too "fancy" for me to name my (eventually) future kids. Don't know any Olivers, neither personal nor any celebs besides the fictional Oliver Twist and Oliver from the RPG game Nino Kuni, there's two non-living Olivers that hasn't been mentioned. The first one is Oliver Wallace, a music composer who wrote music for a lot of classic Disney shorts, as well as the feature films Fun and Fancy Free , Dumbo , The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Cinderella, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and Lady and the Tramp. The other one is Oliver "Ollie" Johnston, a legendary animator and one of Disney's Nine Old Men, having done animation in Disney films from Snow White up until The Fox and The Hound, after which he retired. He had a life long friendship with collegue and fellow Disney Nine Old Men animator Frank Thomas, whom he often worked together with, animating one of two characters that acted with in the same scene, for example Thomas did Captain Hook while Jonston animated Mr. Smee. Jonston and Thomas met future director Brad Bird (The Iron Giant, The Incredibles I and II and Ratatouille) at a young age and they would give him advice to him, even when he showed them story reels of his films, like The Iron Giant and The Incredibles. In those movies, they voiced their animated cameos, the latter was Thomas last thing as he passed away a couple of weeks before the movies premiere. Jonston passed away in 2008, being the last of The Nine Old Men who died.

In fact, for a while, us Irish people stopped using it altogether over him (much like what happened with Adolf in Germany), but then when Oliver Plunkett became a saint, the name came into use again. Where I live, there is a St. Oliver's church (presumably the same Oliver) and a Scoil Oilibhéir (which is the Irish for "Oliver's School", and was the schoolnI attended) near my house, and an Oliver Plunkett St in the city centre. So there may still be hope

@@aaronodonoghue1791 yes I am familiar with those (from Galway and a gaeilgeoir). I actually always liked the name Oliver. It was one of the names my wife and I thought about for our son.. but that didn't go down too well with our peers. Damb Cromwell! 😂

I think it stems from when the mother's were growing up. There would be 4 Matthews and 5 Jessica's in every class. Kinda annoying right. But the same doesn't really hold true today. In 1980 the top names in the US accounted for over 3% of births whereas the top names today account for about 1% of births. So there is less chance of having a double up. I think k the trend to being "unique" has made all names more unique. Source ssa.gov

My mother chose my name to be different from the family name of Leia because Star Wars came out, she was afraid that it would be so popular. Funny thing is that I have only met one Leia in my whole life.

Yeah, I'm personally not keen on names like Harry or Oliver, too common. I prefer more distinct names such as Euphemia, Terence, Isabella, Middleton etc.

I don't think I've ever met anyone named Oliver. I mean if you threw out a list of names and told me to organize them based on popularity I'd put Oliver near the bottom. I have met a few Olivia's though.

Oliver Cromwell is the most famous Oliver. Perhaps his popularity lives on. There are statues, tanks, battle ship, locomotive, etc all named after Oliver Cromwell. On the other side, he was unpopular due to the atrocities committed against Catholics. However in his time European atrocities against Protestants, Catholics, Jews, Muslims, etc were unfortunately the norm. Cromwell was however good to the poor, non conformist Protestants, Jews, etc. He created the British commonwealth and the English speaking world would be a different place if that Oliver was not part of our history.

I only know one Oliver, and he's my uncle. The only other Olivers I know of are famous or fictional ones like Oliver Twist or Olly Murs (British singer). Maybe Oliver isn't as popular in Ireland?

I almost chose the name Oliver for myself but I just couldn't do it because every time I had Oliver Oliver, the song from Oliver Twist, playing in my head. Also the word looks like O/Liver and I didn't like that.

I think for a gender neutral version, you go with Olive. There's also the Number 11. Great Western Engine from Thomas and friends. And it's the name of MatPat's Kid.

I have a very common name, especially for girls born in the '80s and everywhere I went, school, sports club, social gatherings of any kind, there was at least another person with the same name as me. In high school there were five of us in a class of 30. It's extremely annoying. I will never call a child of mine any of the names at the top of the popularity ranking, no matter how much I like them.

as a member of an Italian American family (no, not that kind), the sheer number of Mikes, Johns, Joes, and Anthonys (and their Italian variations) is totally ridiculous. just on my mother's side, there's 12 Joes, 8 Johns, 5 Anthonys, and a smattering of Mikes. I didn't exactly escape, either. my real first and middle names are Sean Michael. even with the variations of Joe, they all tend to be called Joe for short. Joseph = Joe. Giuseppe = Joe. I've even met a couple Giovannis who go by Joe, even though it's really John.
