Looking a bit like MN down there. We had -30 wind chill yesterday, and again this morning. Nice mittens! When its really cold out i use my nose to start and stop recording, no fumbling with gloves or getting fingers cold. Stay warm and have a wonderful day.

George I will remember that nose trick. If my nose gets froze to my phone I’m going to remember you to😊😊😊

Snow is an EXCELLENT insulator. Back in the 70's and 80's winter ground cover was snow in souteastern PA. Spring melt was great for adding water to the water table. Yesterday we had mostlly grass, was green before the deep freeze a few days ago, in north central PA. About midnight Mon/Tues snow began and we now, 6:30 am, have a thick covering. Keep warm!

We certainly need the ground moisture. We will take the white stuff to😊😊

Great job in that design Russ. That is a simple setup that is working beautifully. Although we don't get as much of the temperature extremes in SE TN, it would be great to have right now. For this Tuesday evening at 9pm it is 12 deg F and will be about 0 by daybreak. Thanks for the video Greg!

Great chance to put your systems to the test, Greg! A fine endorsement of all that observation and tinkering. NASA better keep up! Thanks for always sharing the nitty gritty.

It's not wasting water Greg, it's protecting against the main line to the water trough freezing and breaking at full flow which would waste a lot of water and cause other issues. Additionally, the water is being allowed to irrigate a small area of land which will help it in the long run like when the cattle leave a bit of hay that is rolled out. Something about an oz of prevention...

That is impressive. It could work well up here before and after it gets really cold.

Thanks for the video! It sure is cold for sure. By the looks of it we got more snow than you did. With the drifting snow I had to walk in 2 feet of snow. We catch more snow than some people because our forage is taller than others. Our LGDS love this kind of weather more than summer for sure. They look like mini polar bears out there how thick their coats are. If you grow a beard, it keeps your face super warm too. I try to wear sunglasses or safety glasses outside when it’s this cold out because they do make a nice wind block for the eyes.

My glasses certainly help with the brutal cold wind, only problem is the fog over and then you cannot see.

Good morning Greg. Could you maybe discuss the benefits and pitfalls between using this method of keeping stock tanks from freezing Vs an electrical heat device/source? All the best to you and yours.
@gregjudyregenerativerancher9 ай бұрын
The stock tank heater in the tank would not work by simply hooking it up to a hydrant. The hose and hydrant would freeze and crack open. In below zero weather, you have to have running water through your supply hose to keep it from freezing. If you had a way to fill a stock tank up with water and then unhook your hose while placing the stock tank heater in the tank, that would work. Problems arise quickly with large herds, they run out of water. On our 300 head cattle herd, we are using the same tank, 50 gallon continuous flow with this awesome brass valve. It has not froze yet and the cows have not run out of water.

@@gregjudyregenerativerancher I appreciate your reply, it’s invaluable. Funny how we learn things in life, I’m sure you’ve been watering livestock since Christ was a cowboy, but this must be your most effective system yet.

Curious, what is your water temperature. Snow does make a great insulator. Life is good on the farm. You folks stay warm!
@gregjudyregenerativerancher9 ай бұрын
Water temp off the water line is 50 degrees. That is certainly helping as well on the hose not freezing.
@farmerrod31599 ай бұрын
I am impressed with that temperature off the water line. I thought it would be around 40-42 degrees even a little lower. Nice.@@gregjudyregenerativerancher

Some RVers who stay in colder environments use a plug in water hose cover that keeps it from freezing. Stay warm and safe.

Are you keeping the ATV in the garage yet? How about the other vehicles?
@leelindsay56189 ай бұрын
Also, if you pack the snow in an arch above the pipe, it will keep the heat of the moving water in very well and that air space will make a difference. You won't have snow for too much longer though. Keep warm.

How often do you move the cattle and sheep in this type of weather?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher9 ай бұрын
Cow mob twice per day moves. Bull mob is one move per day. Sheep/goat flock moved every 2 days.
@rachelday18039 ай бұрын
@gregjudyregenerativerancher thank you. What is the reason to move the cattle more often than the sheep?

What’s that big yellow float in your tank?
@gregjudyregenerativerancher9 ай бұрын
That is the float that shuts off the water valve after the tank fills back up when cattle get done drinking. Same system as your toilet when you flush it.
