PREACH James, PREACH! First you come up with protecting the origin of Calzone as an *Italian* word that got munched up and appropriated by the US Then you call yourself "European" (first UK citizen I've known to say that, it's always "oh but you guys in Europe...", like "wtf you talking about, UK IS part of Europe, weather you like it or not!") And then, the FINISH 'EM fatality, the tirade about US, WWII, "open up your views, accept you may not know". Just 🙌

Calzone comes from the Neapolitan word cazone [kaˈtsonə], with a final indistinct schwa vowel. Calzone [kalˈtsone] is the corresponding word in Italian with a fuller final vowel as is typical for the language (technically, Neapolitan and Italian are separate languages). The popular American pronunciation as cal-ZONE [kælˈzoʊn] might come from Sicilian speakers pronouncing the Italian word calzone, Sicilian itself being a separate language that was spoken by lots of immigrants to North America (most people in southern Italy didn't grow up speaking Italian until after the relatively late unification of Italy). The same Sicilian accent is responsible for names like Capone and Stallone rhyming with bone in English. In the UK meanwhile, they went for a halfway imitation of the Italian pronunciation, with "z" pronounced as in English. So the pronunciation you use in English simply depends on which pronunciation you take as the source. No one is using the original Neapolitan pronunciation, though.

Good point. But I think it only matters how the current residents pronounce it, because language is fluid. I lived in Terre Haute, Indiana for a few years, which is a French name from the 1700’s. But the current residents don’t pronounce it in French. They pronounce it with their dialect. I also lived in a area called Topsail in North Carolina, also named in the 1700’s. And the current residents definitely don’t pronounce it the way it was pronounced in the 1700’s.

Nope. Several US states have names derived from the Spanish language (like California, Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado). No one uses a strict "Spanish" pronunciation when talking about these states. Same goes for US cities (San Diego, Los Angeles, San Antonio, etc.). To a certain extent, ALL of these names have been 'Americanized.' Things change over time...
