Notes:
At 0;47, I refer to the console Kosmic is using as the Nintendo Famicom Disk System. He wasn't actually playing on the Disk System, just the Famicom. The Famicom is essentially the Japanese equivalent of the NES, and the Disk System is an add-on to it that reads special floppy disks.
At 4;06, I mention that Kosmic holds the Glitchless WR with a 5;06.709. However, there is a video by Scott Kesler of a 5;05. This is because of timing differences. Glitchless is how Twin Galaxies (a deprecated high score website) view Super Mario Bros. speedruns, and its timing rules are different. They time from the start press on the title screen, which, because of framerules, adds a variation of up to 21 frames to the time of the run based on which frame you pressed start on. This timing difference adds about 2.5 seconds, so Scott Kesler's 5;05 was actually a high 5;07 by TG rules, and Kosmic's 5;06.709 is a low 5;04 with regular timing.
At 13;15, I say that when the white pixel is missing, the judges are in a bad mood. For the sake of simplicity, I omitted that it's actually a 50/50 of good/bad judges if you don't get the pixel. However, this is frame dependent and not entirely random, and Kosmic rarely gets good judges with the bad pixel, so I took that shortcut.
At 16;15, I say that the game only handles collisions on even frames. This is not accurate. It handles collisions on every other frame, but not necessarily even/odd. The parity of the frames depends on which frame the level was loaded on, so it flips on every framerule.
At 26;35, I claim that the theoretical human limit is 4;55.496. The actual time is 4;55.49668, and it should have been rounded up to 4;55.497.

Dog I'd be flattered. Wait, in this hypothetical scenario, do I assume all of Princess Peach's former memories and thus accept that I was always her? And is this in the context of their universe or ours? If the latter, I am in that case just a line of code and am not sentient. If the former, which is pretty much just assumed already from the get-go, then do I also take on her personality? Given her lackluster reaction at her rescue by the end of the game, I'd think she wasn't actually relieved that Mario had rescued her and was either being sarcastic or didn't care in the first place.

This was actually enlightening on the amount of time, practice, but most of all, research, that goes into speed running. Before today, if you told me someone told that some guy spent several months looking into super Mario bros in order to beat a record by 0.00.066 secs (or whatever unit of timing it was) I wouldn't be too impressed, but after seeing the amount of work done behind the scenes, only for it completely fly over the heads of all the casuals watching (myself included), this definitely changed my viewpoint towards speedrunners. And the craziest thing is that they usually just act like it's all fun and games. SERIOUSLY, that guy was (including, not limited to); a frame away from missing his "bus" a pixel away from fucking up the final level had whether or not he could take it easy decided by a single white pixel And after all of that whether could even make it past bowser's hammer was determined completely by LUCK, the final milliseconds of a perfect run could of been completely annihilated by some bad luck and the guy was just casually smiling the whole way through. People are constantly asking if speed running counts as a legitimate sport but speed runners have to be one of the most patient, enduring and hard working people I've ever heard of. So to all speed runners out there, I SALUTE YOU, for all the hard work you've done to entertain the minority that understands. Keep on running.

@shinobix4925
@shinobix4925 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but the amount of time and effort put into ensuring they are able to play faster is outstanding, it's like saying Usain Bolt just runs faster than everyone else, technically it's true, but we don't respect him for running so fast, we respect him for putting in the work so he could run so fast, and it's no different with speedrunners
@kalashnikov47s
@kalashnikov47s 5 жыл бұрын
@@shinobix4925 using less time to go from A to B in a game is not the same as running. The right comparison is someone being able to read a book faster than you. Probably takes skill yeah but I wouldn't understand why they would train for that, it's cool and all. They can keep on reading the same book slightly faster but I'm just gonna move on to another book when I'm done, they can keep beating me by minutes with the same book.

So if somebody sees being supermario speedrun world champion in the exact same way in which you see being basketball world champion, then he isnt wasting life, he is fulfilling it just in the way in which you wish to fulfill it. If you check out Summoning Salt's videos, he talks about the history of various speedrunning records, and it only gets like this after *many* world records. Some early world records in other games actually have a death or two in them. It's only as the time gets lower and lower do you have to start being extremely precise to break someone else's record. Things were a lot less precise when speedrunners had an extra 15 seconds to work with. Here's his video on this game in this category (which is almost four years old and is thus a little outdated on the current record): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJWknIxth8uUoLs

I don't see how that's possible, in any way lol. This is a fantastic video, but the knowledge and execution bar is way easier to clear than performing an actual speed run by like orders of magnitude. You have multiple instances in the speed run where the margin of error of inputs is a few frames or more commonly a single frame. Or where tricks to shave time are learned through the combined efforts of multiple speed runners over the span of a decade or more. Fucking crazy. You'd have to spend way more time and effort to perform a competent speed run of this game than to make an exact replica of this video.

Incredible video. It's obvious that a lot of time went into gathering info and editing. The animations and clear descriptions should help any view understand exactly what's going on. Plus it's fascinating to see just how much goes into a fairly short run. Thanks for making this; hopefully it answers all the questions any person would have about the wr.

You got my like when you referenced Pannen, you blew my mind with the whole bullet section at 15:00 and you earned a sub from me because of the obvious effort you put into making the whole thing wondrously pedagogical^^ Now I am off to watch part two!

honestly explained so much about my time playing SMB as a kid. Specifically bowsers last hammer not having a hit box and 8-3 hammer bros patterns having an easy patter.

Yeah Summoning Salt is a best channel for these kinda things, and there's been loads of copycat channels that have popped up trying to replicate summoning salt, like this one. Nothing inherently wrong with that, the more great videos made about speedrunning the better, but so many of these channels try and have very similar thumbnails to Summoning Salt to trick you into thinking its a video by him, which is a very scummy thing to do, after all the work Summoning Salt does to make his videos
