Using the compound slide from your old lathe was very a good idea. After you finish grinding the rails. You can have a new machine capable of producing flat peices of metal you can use through out the entire lathe build. It seems like you are going to be very happy with the results. Also I appreciate seeing the sliding truck wheels in action. Seeing how it's supported from all sides of the metal beam for anyone who will attempt to build one.

Thanks for your share the information I am getting stuck for many days looking for a stone wheel cup to grind homemade lathe rail. I used to grind by hand for my old lathe but not good. At this time I have to have to carefully how to make it. Thanks again

Interesting project and I'll definitely follow how this goes. Unfortunately the result from grind can't be more precise than reference, which in this case seems to be construction grade steel beam. There is couple of techniques which you could try which might improve the results a lot. Another one is scraping, which requires straight edged reference and another technique is how to make one. With scraping, you put some die color into reference piece and then rub it against the piece you want to make flat. Then you scrape off high spots and add more color untill it starts to stick evenly. You can find videos about it by searching scraping. It is possible to make relatively good straight edge with simple tools but it'll be not perfect if you don't have tools to check the result. For sure it'll be much better than your current reference beams. You could make it from two similar beams you are using on you lathe bed. You'd only need some grinding powder like silicon carbide. Diamond powder is better but it's quite expensive. Silicon carbide is cheap. First grind both beams as straight as possible with you stoning setup. Then put grinding powder and rub them together untill the result is perfect. Push the beam one quarter over the edge and once and a while rotate beams and change which one is top and which on bottom. Also move them sideways during rubbing. Gravity tries to make upper one concave and other one convex. When the beams are straight, you can test it by putting water between them. They'll slide with almost no friction. If they suck in, they are not straight. Probably your current reference beams are at least 0.2mm difference from straight. You should reach 0.02mm or better with scraping and straight edge. With correct skills and measuring tools, this can bring prescision into micrometer level. Best machines are still done this way. Other problem you might run into is vibration. Lathes are done from cast iron because it's stiff and resist vibrations well. I made my own lathe table from heavy steel beams and they still vibrate badly if my workpiece is out if the balance. I Think you should consider sand bed to support your lathe frame. It'll dampen vibrations well. I considered concrete to my lathe table but it shrink or expand when moisture changes and may bend the frame.

Creating from Mr. Rany Homemade, thank you for your patience I do hope you enjoyed my handy work. well you see how is I work mostly by hand I got only small grinding angle cut and small handy drill motor cut and drill the thick metal I did pay much time but happy make because I want everything accurate. thanks

@@mr.ranyhomemade2466 Very very good!! I am so impressed at your accuracy. Where did you get the drill from? Was that part of another project? I need to make one of those. I see yo use it for many things. I am glad to hear from you my friend.Maybe someday when I am come to visit Thailand? we can have a drink together.Thank you for answering me.

Hi, my friend.. I think, you introduced a lot of distortion to your guide rails by welding on all the supports. You should have bolted them on instead.. Another question..Why not replacing the Drill by an angle grinder.? More power and more RPM... Greets from Germany

Bro.. you need linear rails, dialed in properly! If you arent dialing in everything and inspecting it this is pointless, unless you dont care about making parts to spec.. You also need to heat treat the steel after welding it so it rests, then grind them in. You obviously have huge potential bro! But do things the correct way and things will end up much better

Thanks my dear friend for your best time to watch my video. I will try my best and thanks for your suggestions it went wrong sometimes I knew but I’m looking around my body it nothings so only handmade. Nowadays I almost finish this lathe only one leaving is gears box for making threads. This lathe working not bad but it help me next project too. want making CNC machine that is under my project too but for now, I haven’t finished my handy lathe yet because I'm stuck looking for gears for the south bend I exactly do need these gears, if I can make these it means I can make threads or bolts and nuts. I found this gear on Amazon but don't know how can pay or shipping here. That's my problem.

Out of curiosity, what was used to make the first precision lathe? Asking for history.
@martindennehy3030

@@missingthe80s58 First lathes weren't at all precise, and there was no such thing as box iron. And every precision machine has the ability to produce a part more accurate than itself, that's not happening here 🙄
@missingthe80s58
@missingthe80s58 8 ай бұрын
@@martindennehy3030 So where did the first precision machine come from? So cold formed square steel tube didn't exist at the time, what was used to make the first precision lathe bed. Other than small hobby lathes or watch makers lathes with round linear bearings, most lathes are of the flat and V types surface, so excluding Doctor Emmett Brown taking a Brown & Sharp surface grinder back to the early 19th century, what was used to make the first precision lathe beds.
