Fun fact about Mipha's theme: the two repeating notes in her melody are the "Mi" and "Fa" of the key, MiFa, Mipha. Same is true with the theme of her younger brother Sidon, where his theme is "Si" and "Do"
@PiercingSight3 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure that’s right. Her theme’s repeated notes are So and Le (the 5th and flat 6th of the minor chord). They’re only Mi and Fa to the relative major, which isn’t the chord being played.

@@jlhitz35 - That makes sense, but I’m completely unfamiliar with the “fixed Do” system. Do has always been tied to the tonic of the key in my experience. I guess we could say that they are Mi and Fa assuming Mi and Fa can be the 5th and 6th of the tonic.
The cool thing about Breath Of The Wild's soundtrack is that it does reference fan favorite themes at times, but it does it very subtly and by breathing new life into it. Rito Village for example is a massive reference to Zelda Wind Waker, but the original sounds almost like a complete different piece of music due to the difference in orchestration / instrumentation! Amazing how they can re-invent the soundtracks while not losing the points of origin, just kinda like the stories of the several Zelda games often share similarities between each other, all while often being very fresh experiences. Zelda rocks

I like this approach a lot better than the Final Fantasy VII Remake's soundtrack. The latter is just "real instruments = better" mentality. I've always enjoyed the personality of each game console's hardware, and how it affects instrumentation. Converging everything into orchestral just homogenizes the entire soundscape of video game music to one trope. Nintendo used orchestral where it fit -- as the backing to an epic medieval fantasy. Big band jazz for Mario Kart. So on, so forth. I appreciate the diversity as well as the quality.

I think the fact that the music is so heavily piano-focused is perfect for the vibe that BotW is trying to aim for. Some say that piano is the loneliest instrument, and it absolutely captures that lonely mood that Link must be feeling after 100 years asleep, exploring this wide expanse of a world in ruin, where all his friends have died.
@gentlespirit43 жыл бұрын

As a game audio professional, I wish you would spend some time with a video game composer to learn about how they get this music to work in game. So much effort gets put into separating content into different layers and phrases in the engine so that it can react dynamically to player moments and ultimately flow in a manner that still sounds pleasing. The soundtrack versions are not how most people fall in love with the music, it's through those in-game experiences.

what I love about mipha's theme is that the melancholy is palpable without it verging on the overly dramatic. it's an almost submissive, defeated type of melancholy with a sort of "this simply is what it is" undertone and I think the B♭ really makes this emotion pop out where it could alternatively have gone a more dramatic route genuinely I have no idea about music but that's the emotion I'm getting and I have no idea if what I said makes sense to anyone else

each time i listen to the soundtrack, each song makes me recall the first time i saw a given zone or stable or village, or fought my first guardian. it's extremely evocative and the game is such a personal experience because of how you move through the world, and the sparse but impactful use of musical scores and themes is a big part of that experience. it's a wonderful game to go back and play in no small part because of how the music gets tied intrinsicly with your own experience of the game.

Most people are used to having their senses bombarded (especially with looping music) during video games, so they expect an overwhelming score. But the whole philosophy of BOTW is about introspection, quiet discovery, lament, fractured remembrance, stagnated decay and slow healing. The score perfectly encompasses all these themes. I don't think people hated the *soundtrack* at all. What people didn't like was that much of what plays, especially in the first few hours of gameplay, is ambience. Yes, walking into The Temple Of Time and seeing it broken from your memories of OoT's Temple, the ambience and plucking of somber notes is perfect - but it's still ambience. The Great Plateau and Shrines (also early are most of the places outside of towns and off horseback) are just you, alone, with your thoughts as Link grunts up the mountain you've been waiting to for the weather to climb. Now that the game has been out for years, it's not as big a deal. But when you first played through the first new Zelda title for the new console, you probably didn't have a podcast or your own music playing because you wanted immersed in the new experience. Now we know what parts are quiet and manage that to our tastes. There's PLENTY to criticize in BotW, but I don't think the composition of music was ever in question. Nintendo's music is generally as reliable as their pricing.

The music both reflected and guided my feelings at any given moment, and I think we can all agree that that's what made it so special.

Wow! I wish you analyzed the BOTW Hyrule Castle theme- both the interior and exterior versions are complete masterpieces, with the exterior theme being more militant while the interior theme is tragic. Maybe that’s for another time though ;)

I do love whenever they use classic zelda music and motifs that they fit into the rest of the score perfectly, it never seems out of place. A long way for me to say that the pulling of the Master Sword theme in this game is fantastic.

The music was a HUGE draw for me when I first watched my husband playing the game. It was the first one where I was not only NOT annoyed by the same repeated theme over and over (looking at you, Monster Hunter) but it was also gorgeous, as was the scenery. I would actually just sit and relax on the couch with him while he played, lol. Once I got to see some of the puzzles, I was pretty sold on it. First open world game I've ever tried and it's been the best experience!

Dude! I just realized what your channel is. It's like those shows where someone goes to a gourmet restaurant and eats the most amazing meal and you can see it in their expression, but you're not there to experience it yourself. Except with music (and your channel)...we get to experience it at the same time. I don't know the music in the technical way that you appreciate it, but I can appreciate it all the same. Seeing you call a piece of music "beautiful" around the same time my brain did the same, is super dope! On a side note, I did a quick dive in your past videos and I don't see anything about the music in the Pixar movie "Soul". Seems like it would be right up your alley, unless my search-fu is weak. Either way, looking forward to more content...subbed! :)

I also love that there are a few parts in the game that *do* have classic zelda music in it, either 1:1 recreations with more fitting instruments or new unique songs with a tinkle of an old song in it just as a tease. But the fact that these are so rare makes them so much more special and your instantly like "oh my God, that was zelda's theme" yada yada.
@TheEggoEffect3 жыл бұрын
Something I noticed a few months ago listening to the Field (Night) theme with headphones is the same high piano note panning from right to left before fading away, almost as if you were adventuring at night and heard some small critter moving around in the distance. Later on in the song, a sound effect plays that slowly crescendoes before abruptly stopping, as if you had a suspicion something was creeping up behind you before turning around and seeing nothing there. The Field (Night) theme makes the whole nighttime adventure atmosphere feel so much more real and immersive. It’s also worth mentioning the homage to the overworld theme from the original Zelda in the Riding (Night) theme. My favorite song in the game, however, is the full Tarrey Town theme. For those not aware, (spoilers ahead!) the Tarrey Town side quest consists of finding people from all the different races around Hyrule to build a new town from the ground up. The Tarrey Town theme begins as some ambient piano chords with an English horn playing the main Tarrey Town melody, but it’s clear that there’s something missing; the music feels empty and incomplete. As you recruit people to help build the town, new instruments and the main melodies form their towns are added to the mix; a trombone from the Gorons, a sitar from the Gerudo, a clarinet from the Rito, strings from the Zora, and finally bagpipes from Hateno Village. By the end of the quest, the Tarrey Town theme has evolved into a beautiful medley of the game’s town music, reflecting how Tarrey Town itself is a medley of different cultures from across Hyrule.

People were so mean to this soundtrack. The criticisms given made it sound like they all thought the soundtrack consisted exclusively of the Fields Theme. They'd talk about how it was just some random low chords with high note motifs played randomly, which to be fair isn't _entirely_ wrong because there is a degree of randomness in-game when it comes to how much time there is between motifs but it's still a gorgeous piece and definitely not representative of the entire soundtrack. Although, I can somewhat understand how they came to that misconception because it is the most common theme you will hear, but that doesn't change the fact that the criticisms were largely baseless.
@MrVisualHigh3 жыл бұрын
Not baseless at all, if you spend 99% of the game exploring the wilderness then that's the music your going to judge it on. The game had some great tracks, it's just a shame they chose to play them for us so scarcely.

The funny thing about you mentioning in 3:50 that they didn't want to rely on old Zelda games music, is that Rito Village is actually a new version of the Dragon Roost Island, from The Wind Waker. Other themes such as Zelda's Lullaby can be heard when riding horses, but it's integrated in the theme in a very subtle way, brilliantly
