How it's like to Work and Live Onboard an Anchor Handler! Operations and accommodation!

Worked in the North Sea from 1984 till 1996 as a Saturation Diver (I'm Scottish). The first Norwegian Vessel I worked on was like a palace. They were as clean as an operating room. They had great food, working environment, well designed and they had it dialed in. We were like cavemen in comparison in those days. We worked 14-16hr days for up to 3 months at at time. Those guys had equal time off and job security. I was totally spoiled working there. The Norwegians have it together the way it should be offshore :)

Well I don't know about the standards in the UK at the moment, but Norwegian, Faroese, Danish or Swedish Manned ships are in exceptionally good condition, I have only heard good stuff about Faroese people for always cleaning and such and that's coming from people there, not the best things about Norwegian right now tho, they've been explained as kind of lazy nowadays

This looks so sophisticated to me. I worked on the North Sea with Smit-lloyd back in the seventies, the crew consisted of captain,mate,two engineers two ab's and the cook. Still we managed to do the same job. Whilst anchor handling and rig moves it was literally all hands on deck for however long it took. Many times more than 40 hours in a row But th pay was good.

Looks a cool job in nice weather with all the gear and best ships , but it wasn't always like that. i remember in 70s in bad weather with Pelican hooks and Now High Horse Power and Crews being severely injured. Im happy to see the boys have the good gear that they deserve , but there are still some cheap skate companies around with poor gear. i was at sea for 50 years now Retired but still enjoyed watching.

It's been 23 years for me. Man that went fast and hurts to say it. It seems like 1998 was yesterday. I served army for 8 years 1990 and then MM 1998. Even that time period it is much different today.

The trio of Siem Amethyst, Siem Topaz and Siem Aquamarine are all in Australia right now. They are servicing and handling the Ocean Onyx off the coast of Victoria at the moment. I have seen them a few times now and they sure are impressive vessels.

Worked for a few years on Smit Lenga (ex Smit Lloyd 75) in the Magellan Strait Eastern Mouth, deploying anchors for Pipe Laying Barge "Yagana". Only 5400HP, Bollard Pull 80T, Karmforks, Pelican Hooks, no DP. We could run 5 anchors in less than 3 hours, then sleep 4 hours, and back to anchor handling, for days on end, until very bad weather came along, and the Barge guys decided to slip all anchor cables, while we picked up the lead anchor, and connected our tow-line, to steam about for a week until the weather improved. Of course we were then charged with retrieving all 8 anchor cables and return them to the barge for spooling on to their drums. Did similar work in the Gulf of Mexico, Cantarell Field, on Smit Hunter in tandem with Viking Bank which was charged with keeping the cable away from the sea bed with a running shackle arrangement. Loved it!

@@justincaldarella Ships aren't the only things that need to be anchored...these are 'other stuff' anchors, for floating drill rigs and the like. They drop the anchors in pre-planned areas with a float attached to each anchor for easy locating. When the rig is towed into place they tie it off to these anchors. When they're done drilling, they tow the rig away and pick up the anchors again for later use.

In Seattle we have a Anchor Handling Tug Supply Vessels and a Offshore Petroleum Distribution System Vessel. Two of the vessels are getting work done at local Shipyards and one is docked at a large fishing marine port. The names of the AHTSV's is called the Ocean Guardian and the other one is called Seacor Lee. The other Oil Rig Vessel that is in town is OPDS called the USNS Vadm K.R. Wheeler which is a US Military vessel.

Three of these assets are here in Victoria at the moment. The Siem Amethyst, Siem Topaz, and the Siem Aquamarine are all deployed off the coast of Port Campbell, Victoria Australia. No clue what they are all doing here but at a Guess, I’d say Gas exploration.

I bought a 2008 E350 extended van at around 6k the trans went out and it was mind bogging because I never even towed with it. it was filled with a lot of heavy tools... they gave me a rental almost equal to what I had while I waited for a new trans to be installed. throw. a thumbs up for Russ Milne Ford in Macomb Michigan.

Drilling Rigs that drill for oil are held in position by huge anchors(25t) but they are not equipped or able to deploy the anchors themselves so that's where these anchor handling ships(AHTS) come in. They will haul the anchors onboard(09.49) then spool out away from the drill rig before dropping the anchor in the sea. The drill rig will then winch in the cable and anchor to tension it. To take the anchor back in it's basically the same but in reverse(pick up the anchor and reverse in towards the rig while it spools the cable in). These AHTS can also replace the anchors and chains on the huge oil storage ships(FPSO) without them having to leave the oilfield. Where I live(North Atlantic) the chains for these FPSO are huge with each link weighing half a tonne.

Why are the big winches so high up, not placed at deck level? (building an AHTS in a video game, trying to find some answers on why the whole winch system is arranged as it is)

Those winch on top are for spare towing wire and anchor handling wires. The main towing wire and anchor handling wire are at the bottom. You can also run chains from the top gypsy. We run 3 chains at same time when we laid the chain mooring system for an FPSO in vietnam wayback 2012. On a skandi Hercules. A sister ship of skandi vega the vessel in the video.
