I absolutely love the 5dev parts and as someone who's studying welding and CNC I appreciate the amount of work that goes into something that seems so simple, I'm hoping in a few years to be at the level where I can load chunk of metal into a machine and insert a program and having it come out looking even just 5% as good and being a fraction as capable as the beautiful bits from 5dev.

The Control Tech TiMania stem is also machined, (zero welds), shares a similar 'cutout' faceplate and thin-walled, ultra-precise construction. (Got lucky, found one in correct geo for my road bike). Beautiful product(s)! 👌

Super cool, that kind of clamp design is so much better than the old 4 bolt faceplate, where it’s impossible to get them tensioned evenly. Sadly, I’m afraid the war is going to make the price of Ti difficult to justify for stuff like this soon.

Pretty cool! Question - What happens to all of the titanium carved away from the original billet? Is it collected and recycled to make new billets?
@5DEV
@5DEV 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. Everything is recycled. We actually get paid for the chips. Nothing is wasted. In time we will have much smaller blanks with way less waste. This is just a prototype project.

Will they making 31.8 stems? I’ve had a Ti stem but it definitely wasn’t that nice and all my stems are aluminum except for my gravel bike that has a carbon stem. I also prefer 31.8 on my Mtn bikes because I like the supple feel and flex or a 31.8 bar. The other benefit of 31.8 is you can swap and try those short stem lengths on your gravel bikes too. Just my thoughts

Super Cool! Just curious how long does it take to machine one start to finish? I'm a machinist and have made a few stems out of 6061 on a 3-axis mill. On a 3-axis machine it takes a significant amount of time because of the number of setups.

So aluminum is lighter than titanium but aluminum can’t be machined into this shape of stem (so much cutouts) and still retain strength, which means a functional aluminum stem might weigh as much or more than this titanium stem?

That slot for tool alignment and your comment "Imagine being able to always center your har in your stem..." makes me wonder, why isn't there a standard that either positions a ring of extra metal around the bar at its exact L-R center, and a ring cut out of the stem plates at its exact center? It only has to be a fraction of a mm high/deep, and lets anyone get perfect results even with their eyes closed. Alternatively, just a line drawn around the bar at its center, and a pair of lines on the stem at the gaps to match up? Maybe it exists on a lot of stems, but not the ones I've owned.
@hardtailparty
@hardtailparty 2 жыл бұрын
The steer tube needs that line too

10-20 years? No way!!!!! It will be obsolete five years from now because the industry moved to a new "standard". 😉 (Said the guy who actually rides and upgrades bicycles for 10 years! haha) It is a beautiful stem though!!

So I disagree when you say "I'm not smart enough to be an engineer" there are spaceX engineers who have to look up basic math formulas. I had a classmate that failed out of high-school, joined the military, did his time, then decided he wanted to do chemical engineering and got better grades than me (I did advanced high-school classes). I hate to be that guy, but don't limit your potential (or those that look up to you) in any way in anything (within the confines of saftey).
