Its nice to see them being built. when they say about the midrange speaker and tweeters, what they don't tell you is aswell as handle different frequencys they are also for directional purposes, they can create an illusion for the soundstage and depending on the set up give transaural directional properties. I once heard some extremely good speakers and they were leagues ahead of anything else. 2 speakers gave full 3d sound in all listening positions. This vid makes me want to make my own

Glue is fantastic, because it does not transmit unwanted vibrations. They also use glue in the car indrustry to put parts of the car body together.

good question. I'm not sure but i think it helps the thermal waste, because the electro-magnet produce some heat. So the heat has to be evacuated, in this case through the well of the core.

@rcfirdy Man, it reproduces only an electric signal, but that signal (imagine your favourite song) is a combination of various frequencies which are changing during the time the song lasts. Only a signal contains the sound of vocals, drums, etc at the same time. (sorry for my english)

Sean Durham , you need as much as 600 volts , and as direct current to create a strong enough magnetic field to align the molecular structure of the ferrite , so you can have a magnet .

I was thinking that voice coil is so massive that it must limit the transient speed of the cone. Then I went DUH it's a subwoofer, it doesn't need to move very quickly. I've done open heart surgery on my Beyerdynamic DT880's and let me tell you, the voice coil in those drivers probably weighs less than a cornflake. That is amazing considering its made of pure copper.

a woofer is a speaker that can respond to a frequency from a range from 40hz all the way up to 1khz or higher, a tweeter is a speaker that can deliver a frequency range from 2,000hz all the way up to 100khz, a super tweeter is a ultrasonic speaker that can deliver a frequency range from 20khz to 100khz and they supposedly affect how music is heard even though they aren't in the range of human hearing and are supposedly felt.

that's so it doesn't vibrate itself apart, woofers have to withstand very high pulling forces. if the coil weren't glued very well to the cone for example, it would pop out of the woofer in the second you turned the music on.

Whenever i'm soldering near the speakers on my organ, the speakers hum. Now, what i am wondering: Is the speaker amplifying the minute sounds of the soldering gun? Or, Is the speaker magnet picking up on the electromagnetic pulses from the gun.

Well the basket and motor assembly can be super heavy, but what has to be light yet rigid is the cone. There are lots of woofer models involving basket and frame assemblies that weigh over 50lbs, some weigh over 100lbs, but their cone assemblies with the suspension and voice coils weigh just several ounces, usually no more than a pound depending on the cone size and material (paper pulp, plastic, aluminum, woven glass fiber, woven kevlar fiber).

@rcfirdy It reproduces the signal as a mixture of the different frequencies. So a speaker reproduces a range of vibrations that was captured by a microphone diaphragm. They use 2 or more speakers in a cabinet to reproduce different speed vibrations (low/high pitch) clearly. So a single speaker cabinet has limits on it's frequency range. Your ear also picks up an approximation of the combined frequencies (vibrations) interacting when you hear musical instruments.

This is a subwoofer actually and the coil needs to move but it also needs to be close one of the poles of the magnet for better power so they cut it and add a core which will have same polarzation with the magnet.And coil can move easily and magnet power will be same.

I agree with an earlier comment that a subwoofer is meant to operate in the Infrasonic spectrum , that is , below 20 Hz . Anything that goes from 20 Hz to 200 Hz is just a regular woofer . Anyway , what is Sodder , I was taught that it is Solder .

a subwoofer is a speaker,don't let anyone tell you otherwise unless they've done research online, a subwoofer is a speaker ranging from 3 inches all the way up to 12 inches or higher that has been laboratory tested and approved to respond to a frequency range from 20hz or higher all the way to 400hz or lower depending on manufacturing specs.

If the movement of the cone creates sound waves that we hear as noise,how can it vibrate at multiple frequencies at the same time.That is to say,how can it produce sound that we hear as music when there is bass,symbols,high pitched guitar,vocals,etc all at the SAME TIME? How can the cone possibly vibrate at various frequencies to produce ALL THE SOUNDS SIMILTANEOUSLY?

This is not a subwoofer, it's a PA midwoofer. But like a subwoofer, it has a lot of travel and can displace a lot of air. The hole in the magnet is for ventillation, to allow air not to be fully trapped but to move in and out. This has an effect on speaker parameters, because trapped air acts like a spring, so ventillation makes suspension less stiff, raising the resonant Q and making driver more efficient. Also attenuates resonance behind dustcap. Cooling is not a primary design criterium.

U could try looking out for older or broken subwoofers too. I do look out for sound stuff, with a good deal u can have nice boxes for nearly nothing. Maybe you could try that, and repair and make it on a boring sunday or something. (: Subbed btw ;p

@MIKON8ERISBACK I really don't know. I do know that all of the drivers are hand made by Magico and all of the aluminum extrusion is done in-house. They are not mass-produced by any means. The company has only a handful of employees.

@EX0contralt0 typically Bass is sound as well a low frequency one and is made by a subwoofer by making a "low frequency wave" a tweeter is for high frequency the same but much smaller and makes high frequency waves the mid one speaker makes the frequencies between the tweeter and the subwoofer frequencies... and by far they are all speakers... for more information read wikipedia...

a subwoofer is a speaker. and pretty much all are made similar to this except for tweeters, supertweeters, horns, etc. your 6.5in, or 8in, or 4in, are the same, just smaller scale.
