Have you ever wondered how every MLS team got its name? Well I did too!
I wanted to know how every Soccer Name changed through the years, so I decided to take an unreasonably long time to research each team and create this video. Hopefully you learn a thing or two, too! Each team is listed in the order that they were founded or became a part of the MLS. And since location plays a huge role in the team name (like 50%) I also hit every move as a part of this video!
In the future be sure to check back and find the playlist with future teams added to the MLS as the league expands, and future name changes!

Be sure to like and subscribe so that you don't miss future videos!

RB Leipzig actually stands for Rasenballsport Leipzig because the bundesliga did not allow Red Bull to give the team a corporate name. Red Bull chose the name rasenballsport because they can abbreviate it to RB and people would mistake the name for Red Bull Leipzig instead of its actual name.

Its not the league which decides where to expand to. It's the local markets which become attractive to the league. New Orleans needs 1) a Billionaire interested in paying $600 million for a team 2) a viable stadium plan 3) a huge marketing budget

I think it’s odd how the MLS tries to appeal to European soccer fans and American fans, like they have teams that have European names like FC Dallas, but then they go and change their playoff format to copy the NFL’s and get rid of 2-leg matches that are iconic in European tournaments. It will be interesting to see where they go with this because one side of the league is trying to go more European whereas another part is trying to appeal to the American audience

@TickleMeElmo55

I don't think they're appealing to American audience at all with the play-off format. It's just an American soccer league formatting itself after other American sports leagues, sort of like how European leagues of American sports (basketball) have pro-reg instead of a closed system; they're keeping the system in which they know and are familiar with. The naming of clubs is what sticks as trying to appeal to European sensibilities.
@einundsiebenziger5488
@einundsiebenziger5488 Жыл бұрын
TBH, a play-off format would make most European countries' national leagues more interesting. In Spain, Italy and most extremely in France and Germany the leagues seem to exist exclusively to supply points to the usuals suspects so they become champions almost each year.

It feels like MLS is having a bit of an identity crisis. I fear that it feels like Brazilian friend who has lived most of her life in Portugal. The Portuguese don't see her as Portuguese enough and see her as Brazilian, while the Brazilians don't see her Brazilian enough and see her as Portuguese. The MLS seem the same, they seem to European to be seen as American, but too Americanise to be popular with Europeans.

Leipzig isn’t called “Red Bull Leipzig”, they are called “RB Leipzig” because the DFB wouldn’t let them put the corporate name directly into the team’s name….officially the RB stands for Rassen Ballsport - which directly translates to Lawn Ball Game. They really had to twist things around to get the initials RB in there in a semi-legitimate way.

As a Quakes fan I'm still mad that the team moved to Houston, made very few changes to the squad, basically only wearing different colors, and then Houston won the MLS title TWO YEARS IN A ROW. @@JustinLearnsThings @Omar Juarez That's a bummer and understand of respect, plus hard core fans since day one, especially rich tradition. Great example is Columbus Crew when prior owner threatened to move team to Austin if new stadium wasn't built before Haslens took over in 2019. Of course, die hard fans and city here in Columbus prevented that from happening in moving team as think even current MLS Commissioner Don Garber isn't much fan favorite here in Columbus was probably going to let it go through. However, new stadium was built in downtown area and opened last year. Hence, prior owner now owns Austin and got expansion team out of it. Another example is the Cleveland Browns in the National Football League when prior owner Art Modell moved to Baltimore in 1997 due to dispute with city of Cleveland in new stadiums for football and baseball as Indians got new stadium but be couple more years for the Browns with contract of old Municipal Stadium at time + factors. In 2000, the newly named Baltimore Ravens (new name as uproar by Browns fans kept original name in Cleveland) won the Super Bowl, 4 years after move and hate Baltimore for that as much as Pittsburgh or even more. Even Steelers fans were shocked as that old, traditional rivalry was haulted for a while. Around time of Browns move to Baltimore, think Ohio passed a law (Modell Rule?) where a team name will be kept in state despite owner wanting to move another state or something similar to those lines as I don't know exact detail to be honest. Think in 2004, the Cleveland Browns were reinstated after hiatus. Therefore, from prior statement and due new law, The Columbus Crew stayed. Wish Bay area/San Jose didn't have brief hiatus as Browns did and had same situation like The Crew had in strong support overriding political power, $$, and greed that takes place in society today.

A fun fact about brazilian teams names: The most popular sport here in Brazil at the ending of 19th century and beginning of the 20th century was regatta (boat racing), obviously in coastal cities, mainly in Rio de Janeiro. The most successful Regatta Clubs, or Clubes de Regatas (CR) in portuguese, started to create a Football/Soccer department as the popularity of this "new" sport kept growing. So now 3 of 4 big football/soccer teams from Rio de Janeiro city have "R" in their names, CR Flamengo, CR Vasco da Gama and Botafogo FR (Futebol e Regatas), with Fluminense FC being the exception. Today nobody cares about regatta here in Brazil, but the clubs kept CR on their names to respect the history. To be clear, almost every team is a multi-sports club here in Brazil, so its not that odd to see an volleyball or basketball team with FC on its name, or a CR team being a big football/soccer club, as I explained.

Nashville SC actually started as Nashville FC (Football Club) in the NPSL in 2013, when we got the promotion to USL we were required to change the name and decided on Nashville SC, there was a pre-existing organization called Nashville FC (an American Football group) requiring the change to avoid any legal issues and we wanted to honor our origins so we just changes the Football to Soccer, we changed the logo as well when we promoted up to USL but kept it similar in shape (a round shield style). @@thedannyboy1221 And its a league where American talent is born and sold of to the European Leagues, Tyler Adams, Red Bull New York. Pepi, eventually Europe. Chris Muller, Orland City FC. Busio, SKC. Tyler Adams, Roma. Our league has lost of young talent but no one cares. Every one ignores that for the 20 or so old players that want cash. Its the same thing for the A-League and Indian Super League, but we get 20x the criticism. I don't get it. MLS is 25 Years old. What as the English Football League like when it was 25 years old, back in 1913/14. Probably not that good with decent-ish players and mediocre attendance. No, I don't think MLS is better than the Top 5 leagues like some idiotic MLS fans. The league is top 20 in the world and thats okay. The league does have old players that are just their for a quick buck. But thats less than 1% of the league. Europeans just focus on that just to make fun of MLS. So what, our league is consistently giving you guys talent and world betters and you guys call us a RETIREMENT league for like 30 players. Its only a few clubs that are like that, LA Galaxy, New York/New Jersey Re Bulls, Orlando City FC, Inter Miami CF, and to a certain extent NYCFC. So 5 teams out of almost 30. The treatment of some of these academy teams like NY Red Bulls and FC Dallas, Sporting Kansas and other USL teams are just idiotic. Yes, we do have old players, but our league is so much more than that. Passionate fan bases that beat lots of European ones, players getting drafted late and becoming stars in this league, young stars hoping to get a move an ambitious project in Europe. The league has so much history with franchises dating back to the 70's. Traditions lasting through generation. All of that is avoided because of 30 old guys. You haven't even watched MLS. You probably cant name 10 MLS right now. All you know is that they're are old players and that it's a retirement league. If you do a 5 minute google search, you'll see that MLS is much more than a league that old ageing Europeans come to die. Also, many of the "Europeans that cant play in the top leagues" ended up doing so. Beckham went to PSG, Zlatan to AC Milan, and Lampard to Man City. So please, don't just go around criticising MLS fans for asking for respect when we don't even get that respect on our own nation.

There's an additional wrinkle to the "Seattle Sounders FC" story that was left out. In 2008, when the franchise was making the transition from USL to MLS there was a fan vote for the team name. The options were Seattle FC, Seattle Alliance and Seattle Republic. After a huge outcry a write-in option was added. Fans used that write-in to overwhelmingly vote to keep "Seattle Sounders" as the name. Ownership relented, but tacked on the FC to feel like some sort rebranding had happened. They just want to be "cool" like Real Madrid. It's just cringy. I am a huge fan of Eastern European soccer and probably the biggest reasons is the history. MLS has no history so they make history up. The team trying the beat to show some history I guess woukd be the New England Revolution since they had until a few months ago a good logo and back in 2016 jerseys made to resemble revolutionary war uniforms. Yep I prefer the original crest (the three labourers). But with today trend when the clubs simplify their crest, they should remodel the crest without leaving the roots. I think it would be a proper crest if they remodeled it with the helmets or hard hat with the name of crew in front of the helmet. And the helmet itself was inside a shield

Part of the reason for Orlando's name and mascot are the "City Beautiful" is Orlando's official nickname and on the Seal of Orlando and the Orlando Lions were an original soccer team in the 80s that started as an amateur club to try and get the higher tiers. While "lions" is not the official name, the history of that name led to the unofficial nickname/mascot of the team.

Chicagoan and life long (born in 1997 so literally) fire fan here. At 10:10 he says the first star represents the fire. This is false, the first star is the founding of Ft. Dearborn (which he later calls the fourth star) each star in his list should be pushed down one. This is significant because a lot of monickers within the club play with the term “second star” in reference to the Chicago Fire being the second star on the flag.

Great video. I want to expand a little bit on the sporting kc name. While there are many multi sport clubs around the world (clubs that play in more than one sport under the same name) some clubs choose to denote that fact with their name. Some teams call themselves "Atheltic Club" others "Sport Society" (my favorite is a team in ecuador that call themselves a "high performance sports club") but the majority who choose to celebrate that fact call themselves Sport Clubs or Sporting. Although the main reason for Sporting KC rebranding was to align themselves more with traditional naming conventions of Europe, the original plan for the then new owners was to also start a major league rugby team under the same Sporting KC name and thus become a true multi sport club. However, at least to my knowledge, that never took off so the name is more of an ornament than an actual testament to sporting KC actually being a multi sport club. Fun fact: the "SC" on the club shield stands for Sporting Club which is the name of the ownership group that operates SKC. Again their original intent was to actually own multiple sport teams under that same name but sadly that never happened. Multi sport clubs aren't really a thing on a professional level. The closest thing I would say would be owners of multiple sport franchises following a similar naming/colour scheme across different franchises. Like Revolution and Patriots, Sounders and Seahawks, Atlanta united and Atlanta falcons, and Charlotte FC and Carolina panthers. The franchise model more or less prevents multi sport clubs from being a reality in the US. Interestingly, the US has a deep passion and popularity with multi sport clubs in the form of collegiate sports. That's the closest thing the US has to true multi sport clubs. And another fun fact is that whereas in the rest of the world the naming convention for multi sport clubs is "Sporting" or "Sport club" the US naming convention is tacking on the word "athletics" to the full team name. So Florida Gators Athletics would be an example of an official team athletic program name. It would be cool if a professional multisport club ever becomes a reality in the US

The name of Real Salt Lake was really chosen because the owner at the time wanted to get some kind of working agreement with Real Madrid and thought that being called Real Salt Lake would make that easier. To get fan support for the name and the team, however, there was a contest to pick the name of the team even though the owner had already chosen the name. In addition to Real Salt Lake, the fans could vote on a whole list of names, like Alliance Salt Lake, Utah Highlanders, etc., but in the end, Real Salt Lake was the name "chosen" by the fans. I think that the team should have been named Utah Highlanders just because the fans could painted themselves green and blue, worn kilts to the games and basically just acted like extras in the movie Braveheart. But, instead we got Real Salt Lake which has no real meaning for Utah. At least Highlanders can be used to refer to people from the mountains, which we have lots of.

The Los Angeles Galaxy's name is also fitting for two more reasons: it's the most popular and most recognizable MLS club in the world, and it's the MLS club with the most high-profile DP signings. David Beckham, Robbie Keane, Landon Donovan, Alexi Lalas, Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimović, the dos Santos brothers, Jorge Campos, and most recently, Chicharito, are playing/have played for the club. Ruud Gullit was the head coach/manager at one point. It also had notable footballers like Andrew Shue (Hollywood actor who played for the Galaxy in its 1st season while also being a regular cast member of the TV series _Melrose Place_ ), Robbie Rogers (1st openly gay man to play for a top-flight professional North American sports team), and Jonathan Klinsmann (2nd choice goalkeeper and son of former USMNT head coach/manager Jürgen Klinsmann). Interestingly enough, the Galaxy's popularity echoes the New York Cosmos' popularity in its heyday (astronomy-related team name, based in a major US city, international recognition, signing the most star players out of any club like Péle, Franz Beckenbauer, Carlos Alberto, and Giorgio Chinaglia).

I feel North American Soccer Club names were define by the New York Cosmos, which I feel is one of the best names in all of professional sports since it defined the Club as a unique entity with roots both in the world and the city it represented. If someone can get the naming rights in New York please use it. (Sorry but LA Galaxy seems to me to be a cheap imitation.) Next favourite team name is Vancouver Whitecaps using a natural features surrounding the city. Also the Whitecaps and Cosmos are forever melded to their city. ( Never want to hear of the Cleveland Cosmos or Boise Whitecaps or anything like that.) Chicago Fire and Philadelphia Union also work for me for those reasons and all these names just roll off the tongue like they were meant to be. Philadelphia Union is also a much better name than DC United since it uses the a similar word but the North American context, Union, I feel, works much better. Not only is the name United bad, but I also do not Like Sporting, Dynamo and especially Real Salt Lake. These names have nothing to do with their local culture. FC or SC is okay and seems unimaginative but at least those clubs don't pretend to be something they are not. . One Final note I do want the name Tampa Bay Rowdies to return if at all possible. I talked about names that sing or roll of the tongue. So here it is what seems to be my criteria for soccer clubs names: Come up with something about the your city but have it sound like it was always meant to be..

I hope the MLS goes back to more traditionally american sports teams names, like the galaxy, rapids, sounders, you get it. I understand what they were trying to do, to be more like european clubs, but I think it actually had the opposite effect. The soccer scene in the US is ever growing, and creating a more unique league, and naming traditions, will put the MLS in the international spotlight even more I believe. I do like some of the euro style names though don't get me wrong, like d.c. united for instance, but it feels like whenever the MLS announced expansion, it wouldn't be fun about revealing a name. Was crazy excited when they announced austin would get a team (I'm from austin), but sad to see it's just Austin FC

That isn't true, Newton Heath LYR FC was renamed to Manchester United FC without merging with any club to try and represent a United city of Manchester and to compete with the already renamed Manchester City FC, they copied the name from Sheffield United and Newcastle United, Sheffield United was founded by a cricket club of the same name which is the first recorded English sports club to use the United name meanwhile Newcastle United was formed from the merger of Newcastle East End FC with Newcastle West End FC and to my knowledge is the only major club that uses United to signify the merger of two clubs into one as opposed to it signifying a United city or area.

1) I'd like to see names that sound both like traditional European teams and like American standard sports teams: Rovers, Rangers, Warriors, Wanderers, etc. "Rovers" would work nicely: it sounds like a typical English team (e.g. Blackburn Rovers), but an MLS team could have a dog in the emblem and hire a guy to wear a bloodhound/spaniel/retriever suit as a mascot. 2) I'd also like to see more teams use geographical/regional names instead of cities or states, such as how the Golden State Warriors represent the Bay Area. Baltimore could be "FC Chesapeake", Detroit/Michigan "Great Lakes United", Colorado "Front Range", and Nebraska "River Platte" (groan).

Fun Fact: LA Galaxy and OG Quakes were both owned by Anschutz Entertainment. Once new SJSU/Quakes stadium talks broke down in the 2000s, Anschutz traded itself Landon Donovan from SJ to LA via GM Alexi Lalas, who then also went to Galaxy. Anschutz then moved the SJ team to Houston and in 2007 MLS made them divest and own only one team (Galaxy). Houston stadium took forever to complete and SJ went on a 3-year hiatus and got a new stadium in 2015.

@@JustinLearnsThings For the first decade some ownership groups owned multiple teams; besides the Anschutz example, Lamar Hunt (the Kansas City Chiefs owner) owned the KC, Columbus and Dallas teams. That dissipated when the league stabilized and added more teams and owners.

I gotta be honest - I don't love this trend that Real Salt Lake started by just mimicking the naming conventions around the world. LAFC, Inter Miami, Nashville FC, FC Cincinnati, etc. are such boring names compared to the LA Galaxy, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, New England Revolution. It reminds me of Cool Runnings when they count in German to try to emulate the "seriousness" of the German squad. Pish posh. Be yourselves and have some damn personality!

@@Compucles To me nicknames should be organic. If my club had been named Seattle FC people STILL would have called them the Sounders. Because that was organic. They knew they needed to change and stand out and they have and are.

In Denmark many football/soccer clubs' full official names are simply "Boldklubben XXXX" and in rare cases "Boldklubben af XXXX" where "Boldklubben"="The ball club". "af"="of" and XXXX is the founding year. Their shortened official names are just "B XXXX", sometimes with a space and sometimes not. Only one of these clubs are founded in the 19th century, specifically in 1893, and it doesn't even show the century in the short name, as it is simply called B 93. AFAIk there are only 2 German clubs where the founding year is represented in the shortened name: 1860 München, and Schalke 04

I’ve always loved the the idea of relegation in the MLS, but there’s no way the owners would risk that kind of money! The league is just structured differently, so they would probably have to conceive of some way to ensure that no one lost value if their team got relegated… probably something structuring tv revenue… just spit balling!
