Here's another fun fact: the Portland Trail Blazers and Dallas Mavericks almost shared something unlikely in common: while the Portland team was nearly the Pioneers (the name already associated with Lewis and Clark College), Dallas became the Mavericks (named for the TV Western Maverick) in spite of the Mavericks name used by (and still is today) the University of Texas at Arlington. While UTA had some objections with Dallas using the Mavericks name, no legal actions ever occurred.

The origins of the United name is more complex than that. The first "United" where Sheffield United formed in 1889. Their name comes from the Cricket club Sheffield United CC, who were formed in 1854, so even before Sheffield FC, the world first football club, were formed. They were, however, formed from the merger of several local cricket clubs. The 2 clubs shared Brammall Lane, until the 1970's. The Cricket club still exists, but now plays in Rotherham.

So the National in NHL refers to the nation of Canada, yet its "Original 6" teams consist of 4 from the states. That makes sense.

The Jets returning was like a fever dream. The city was literally ablaze with hype as the deal started to come to a close, 13 000 season tickets selling out, people marching in the streets crying out for the NHL's return to Winnipeg. What a time.

I live in Michigan although I am an Oregonian originally, and I have to say I think it would've been better for the Red Wings to stay with cougars because considering Detroit has the Tigers for baseball and the Lions for football, Detroit could've been called "big cat city"

Great video, well done. I like how you show the team logos in the geographic location. My suggestion/request is to show the logos of the original teams before they were moved. For example, show the Hartford Whalers logo when talking about the Hurricanes. Show the logos of the North Stars, Cleveland Barons, Kansas City Scouts etc.

7:50 - some of our most notable military equipment is named for native Americans. The Blackhawk, Chinook, and Apache Helicopters. The Tomahawk Missile Family was named for the Native American Weapon. To change the name of such a prestigious hockey franchise for "political correctness" would be doing a disservice to native Americans in general. If the team IS to be renamed, actual tribes should be the ones to make that decision, not idiotic League or Government bureaucrats.

Let me elaborate on Tampa Bay because you didn't include any of Phil Esposito's story for naming his franchise the Lightning. Anyway. He didn't want a name ending with 's' because he wanted it to sound and look unique (another reason why he hates the nickname "Bolts"). He was at party, probably on the Bay, I'm a little fuzzy if im remembering or making up that detail, and was watching a storm roll in. If you've ever watched a massive thunderstorm roll in, then you know how foreboding, impressive, and overwhelming it can appear. Then, lightning flashed and it was like everything clicked for him and he knew their name had to be the Lightning. It's not crazy dramatic, but I love it. It is due to everything you mentioned that the name makes sense (some people even believe Tampa means sticks of fire in an indigenous language) and Phil saw that storm that day, but the experience of standing in front of a storm and recognizing its raw power is the actual origin. You should watch him talk about it. He's so proud of what he built. He kinda tricked the committee too by rigging the Fairground's seating, cause they technically didnt have the numbers. He was like "we're getting this franchise!" So fun. Anyway :)

And Chicago Zephyrs? I never thought I'd find out what it meant, but I thought you'd find this interesting. It's kind of twofold: for one, the word "Zephyrs" represents Chicago's solid winds and breezes coming off Lake Michigan. And for another, it was meant to invoke a sense of speed and power, perhaps fitting for a pro basketball team in a highly populous city like Chicago.
@JustinLearnsThings13 күн бұрын
I learned later, too, that there was a train named the zephyr that was from like Chicago all the way to the West Coast. So definitely a lot of reasons why something in Chicago could take on the name Zephyr! Very interesting history!

Utah needs to pick a name already. I know they are an expansion team, but Utah Hockey Club sounds like flopball (soccer). I agree with a lot of people who think Yeti would be a great name. The Utah Yeti fits perfectly. Toronto has my 2nd favorite uniforms, the blue and white are clean as Hell. It was cool to see how they got their name. The Wild logo is very creative. The Coyotes logo is the ugliest logo. Speaking of the Coyotes, if San Antonio could ever support a NHL team, I would love to steal the Coyotes. We wouldn't have to change the name. However, I would hope we would make a better looking logo. The Pittsburgh Penguins are my favorite team. I hate the Capitals, Flyers, Red Wings, Bruins, Rangers, and Islanders. When Vegas got a team, they became my 2nd favorite team at the time, cause of Fleury.

I don't get the link between Penguins and Igloos. Penguins live at the South Pole and people who make Igloos live at the North Pole. Pittsburgh Polar bears would've made more sense if the owners wanted a name that started with the letter P and have a link with Igloos.
