Thank you for this video and your observations! I agree with some points but I disagree with others (based on my experience from Italy and having many Italian friends). I consider the main reason being this: every meal is an event, typically shared with others (maybe except for breakfast). There is no mindless snacking throughout the day; every meal has its time and is enjoyed in company. Italians DO like to eat pasta very often, especially for lunch, even at home. They rarely skip breakfast (although this typically means a few cookies or a piece of toast with jam). I have probably NEVER seen an Italian skip dinner, except maybe some events such as Christmas, when lunch is really excessive. They easily eat the whole pizza for dinner and then eat normally the next day. That being said, they tend to be aware of their weight and try to maintain it being active, walking a lot, choosing healthier options. This, combined with the Mediterranean diet, with lots of simple, fresh, seasonal, and unprocessed foods, lots of cooking at home, and considering food practically sacred, is what makes (many) Italians slim😊.

To be honest we do eat pasta or rice almost every day (Italian speaking here), but not seasoned as the rest of the would think. I eat pasta every day, also twice a day sometimes, but most of the time it's just pasta (sometimes wholegrain pasta) with extra virgin olive oil and chili pepper flakes, and the rest of the times it's pasta seasoned with some vegetables or legumes (pasta with just tomatoes, of just zucchine, peas, chickpeas and so on). Pasta doesn't need to be calorie heavy, it's actually really light if you season it properly (and in the right portion size, of course). Another thing that makes the difference is, I think, that we mainly use extra virgin olive oil to season almost everything. It's still an oil, so veri caloric, but it's full of vitamins and antioxidants.

In Italy there are both skinny as well as slightly overweight to morbidly obese people. There are of course those who eat well and love walking/doing sports, but at the same time there are those who drive their motorcycles/cars everywhere. Once I saw a woman driving her car to go from one side of the street to the other just to go grocery shopping. Italian city centres are residents’ cars only, meaning that, if you don’t live there you have to walk everywhere. That’s why many people skip that area and go to supermarkets or shopping malls they can reach with their cars. I know a clothing brand that caters only to plus size women which has been in business for more than forty years and right now where I live there are three more such brands. Regular clothing companies have sadly been shrinking their sizes for quite some time, thus forcing what were once regular sized people to shop elsewhere. As for cooking from scratch, that’s what my grandmother did. Ready made meals have been a staple in Italian households for many years. It’s a very common thing to see someone have pesto jars or any other pasta sauce in their cupboard. Same goes for packed tortellini in their fridge or frozen pizza in the freezer. No one has time to cook everyday from scratch, or even if they have, they don’t like cooking. Snacking is a normal practice, same with drinking fizzy drinks like Coca Cola, Fanta or Sprite. Then there are energy drinks, juices, …

My theory is that richer, especially butter-slathered, and flavor-filled dishes actually end up causing one to eat less total calories because they actually satiate, mentally and physically. Leaving butter off the bread or going light with salads on a 'diet' just ends up culminating in binging because you're always left craving. So much American food is bland and of low-quality, low-flavor ingredients, so you end up eating more trying to scratch the itch for flavor.

Hi, I am an Italian man aged 61 years old, my height is 5'11" (1.80) and my weight is 10.7 lb (61/62 kgs). I can run and never run out of breath I am still very fit (considering my age and I am a smoker too). My line of work is in Armed Security Industry as a Cash in Transit Operator, so in this Industry is better to be lean and fit. Anyhow, why am I still skinny and fit at my age and why I can still be healthy? The answer is at the beginning of this video: Portions of food on your plate! In US, Australia and most of Anglo-Saxon Countries, people tend to eat until they are completely full. When I sit at the table for lunch or dinner, I stand up from the table feeling still hungry, but that's the trick if you want to keep a good weight or lose it. Then you can eat whatever you want but, instead of a whole portion of food, try to eat as I do, a quarter of portion and you will start to lose or maintain your weight. Don't make food to be the most important part of your life. As I always say to people asking me why at my age I still look good, I always answer: "...I eat to live, not live for eating!" Plus everyday I walk for about 10,000 to 15,000 steps....mind you: Not running, just walking! Also, I don't eat and never had sweets (doughnuts, cakes, chocolate bars) or soft drinks, I truly hate them. If I do have sweets I just eat either Dark Chocolate 80% or two teaspoons of raw honey. I remember back in the day my father would have killed me when I was a kid, if he saw me drinking a soft drink. He was telling me all the times: "...You'd better have a glass of wine than a soft drink!" Now lot's of people may argue that I am a smoker, yes indeed is a bad habit but also having everyday fast or take away food, sweets and soft drinks are bad habits. There are more people dying of colon, pancreatic and intestinal cancers due to wrong diets, than smokers dying by lung or other types of cancer. Finally, me and my partner we always cook our own food (we never have take away food) and if we have pasta we have it once a fortnight, eating each of us 80 gr and we just eat that without the second dish. Hope this helps and sorry for the long post. God bless you all Carus Alambra🙂👍

Most of society eats to the point of bloating and painful fullness which is really bad. Plus lazing around does not help at all. I agree that it does come down to portion control AND fasting. Almost everyday for the last 10 months I eat between 5pm-8pm and I lost 15kg in 3 months with this fasting technique. 125kg to 110kg no workout routine. It works 100%, portion control and fasting 🎉

Ottima idea Marta, ricetta molto interessante!
@martag3046
@martag3046 2 ай бұрын

Buon appetito a tutti!

Hi, I always follow your videos and I really want to compliment you. You did a great job in this video too. The only thing I can't agree with you about is pasta: at least once a day in an Italian family pasta MUST be there (I'm Italian and I lived in Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Rome) ... and I'm not just talking about me or my family ... in any region pasta is the main dish. This habit changes after a certain age (when you are forced to significantly reduce carbohydrates for health reasons)

Interesting! I am not personally sure if Italians are generally skinny. I have been from Dolomites to Sicily, I have seen many over weight people in Italy particularly people over 40s and 50s. I am an averaged built and certainly not over weight adult from another Med country, when I was in Italy, I found very difficult to find fresh veggies if I am not cooking myself at home. Most restaurants options are carb load food - delicious for sure, but also not that healthy. Also, think about their breakfast options - cornetto or cornetto. It is true that Italian portions are smaller and fast food culture is not very common in Italy though that is changing too. I think one reason Italians might be healthier is that they move around more unlike Americans. Probably olive oil, small portions, movement, happy and less stressful life style, good balance between work and rest sports such as running and cycling and fresh food (like pasta, fish) are some reasons why they are managing well.
