How its made | Custom Main Leaf for a Utility Trailer

We where taking a little utility trailer apart and found out the main leaf was cracked around the center bolt hole and we had to replace it. This is how we custom made the leaf and got it to fit into the spring pack.

Hi, I work making and repairing leaf springs all the way over in Australia. At a glance that appears to be an old model Mazda rx3. Weird that it was in a trailer however if it's a homemade trailer it's no surprise.

Probably 1970-1980 if I was to guess. Can tell by the unique square nibbing for the plastic leaf inserts on the ends of the leaf.

after I posted the video I had a little more time to look up the springs and I believe they where out of a ford falcon or something in that era. 1965-1975ish (they did use the square pads till 1980s)

@@simcoespring That was my first thought however in the video they look smaller, maybe 50mm/2" wide material. Still very interesting that they're on a trailer regardless lol.

@@lukeporter8614 yah if my memory is correct it is 2" wide and around 262 or 291 thou thick. Its been a few months since I did this job, so memory isn't perfect.

I was wondering why you use a cutting tip instead of a Rosebud or specific tip made for heating larger areas?

I fabbed a similar tool to turn eyes for hinges but it’s awesome to see an actual professionally made tool! I’ve got a question I’m hoping you can answer for me. Are flat springs heat treated in any way? Thanks for any info! I just found your channel and I think it’s great!

yes, all leaf springs are quenched in oil and heat treated.

I actually have the same eye roller I believe. Still use it from time to time. What is your formula on where to cut the other end to start (“scarf”) the other eye?

Slightly surprised it had eyes on both ends. Seems like many of those light trailers just use a slipper on one end.

I think this spring was made in the 1960s or 70s from an old car, and someone made a trailer out of it.

Hi Sir, Can you please give me a blueprint of this eye former. I mean it would be great if you can give some close up pics and measurements. Especially, the mechanism underneath the base plate. I guess some kinda washer underneath the die pin is holding it in place.

On your drill press, what is the speed you use for drilling the center holes? I mean how many RPM?

The lowest it goes. Which is 120RPM anything faster and it just burns the tip off the bit in a second.
