JAMAICA WITH IRIE

3 жыл бұрын

It took 468 years. Independence is not about a country with borders, it's about people's identity and culture. There is a tremendous difference between living in a place and belonging to that place.
This video is to explain of how Jamaica became a country. From a Jamaican history of Maroons to the history of Jamaican politics - the road to gain independence was long and difficult.
When we talk about Jamaica Independence Day History, the picture presented by traditional historians is of a colony united under the British rule, moving gradually into 1940s towards self-governing and finally to Independence. In reality, however, the division and separation were the key words, because there were no collective memories, no common language, no common culture, no sense of a community for people who had shared the same soil for years. That is why the events that happened from the end of 1920s can be viewed as nothing short of a miracle.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY! 💚🇯🇲 My first video on History of Jamaica. I try to avoid giving my personal opinion - just facts and official data which I gathered through several sources (see the list in description). Not sure if history videos will be interesting for many people, but since I'm a big fan of History in general, I thought I had to share this.

Very well done documentary. I was a teenager in Jamaica in the days leading up to and after independence. Since my family was British, I suppose we were considered to be "upper class", although I certainly never thought of myself in that way. I remember the parades in Kingston on Independence Day. We were a little concerned about our safety, but nothing was ever physically done against us. We emigrated to the States in 1965 when a law was past by the Jamaican government that you had to be a Jamaican citizen in order to work there. (I'm not sure if that was 100% true, but that's what I was told). I was also told that, in order to stay, we would have had to give up our British passports.

This is summarized beautifully but just want to add something important for the students of Caribbean History. The Morant Bay rebellion (1865) began the first step in the process towards CONSTITUTIONAL DECOLONIZATION in the British Caribbean. It ended the Old Represntative form of Government where the white planters made the laws for Jamaica in the local Legislative Assembly. It was replaced in that year by Crown Colony Government which replaced the Legislative Assembly with a Governor (aided by a committee) who carried out the will of the British Crown.

Irie your vlog gave more historical lessons than the teachers gave in school then, but on the other hand history books were printed in London and they obviously left out important facts. They used to set the examination papers in London and correct the papers, so they would not allow the complete facts to be taught in schools. Though the examination papers were set in London, children, on passing their examination, when they immigrated to London and applied for jobs, would be told that their examination results were not good enough, so would have to take tests in English and maths before getting that job, oh how Brittain made it difficult for Jamaicans to succeed.
