Someone has recently asked me for some examples on how Japan is openly racist to foreigners. They asked, they shall receive. Easy, racism comes both from people and the laws themselves.

@@bambam-uw3oxDo white people die differently thank black people? I think the most informative answer would be, no they don't, why are we associating everything with skin color? Lost a car key, "White people are dumb" a person stole something from the grocery store "Black people are thief's" terrorist attack "All brown people are bad" like some of these men have their own mind and they can think for themselves why do we have to generalize a whole group of people based on their skin colour?

I'm from the UK, was married to a Japanese girl, and I lived in Tokyo for 10.years and the discrimination I experienced was both shocking and edifying. Refused access to certain restaurants, couldn't rent properties (as you state) and , I was paid less than my Japanese colleagues and received no bonuses (they received 2 a year). One of the main reasons I left as I knew I could never make a home there.

@@James13372 quite the contrary, you'd vote for them. In the US Donald Trump will be the next president - remind me what he has said he will do on day one? In the UK there is a resurgence on the right with the UK govt making it impossible for asylum seekers to enter the country legally.and in order for asylum seekers to have their claim processed we are threatening to send them to Rwanda where, if their claim is successful, they get to stay - they can't come back to the UK. In the UK they have also passed a law stating you have to have been in the UK at least 10 years to be eligible for housing support. The UK remains I here tly racist - hence my point about living in Japan being edifying. Is is as overt here? Nope. But it still very much exists, and no longer in the shadows thanks to the rise of far right populism.

Unlike in Western countries, the laws governing rental contracts in Japan give priority to the tenant over the landlord. Thus, even if there is a problem, such as not paying rent for several months, the landlord cannot evict them. Thus, paradoxically, landlords will rent rooms only to those who are sufficiently trustworthy. Sufficient income, guarantor, etc. This is the reason why it is difficult for foreigners to rent rooms. If you work for a well established company, talk to them. With the company's certification (sufficient income and reliable identity), you will be able to rent a room easily. Even Japanese people who are poor or have no guarantor have difficulty renting a room.

Or how to know someone has no clue about the world. There is no such thing as Western countries. There are like 60 countries in the Western world and they are all different with their own laws. In the EU/EEA countries alone, about 30 countries, the tenant has more rights than the landlord and It's difficult to evict the bad tenants. In some countries they even have laws to forbid eviction during winter. And yet they don't encourage discrimination. Meaning, where did you get your first claim from?

I work in the Japanese Real estate industry, and I've seen more destroyed apartments than I can count on my fingers. But the real reason Japanese won't rent to foreigners isn't that they think you'll be "Filthy", Plenty of Japanese are filthy in how they live. The BIGGER issue with Japanese landlords is not knowing if you'll respect the rules, and potentially cause issues for neighboring tenants / owners / the building association. Being loud, Not sorting or throwing your trash correctly, bring in other people, and lack of communication for things like inspections of equipment etc. etc. are all things that Japanese landlords just don't want to risk by letting a foreigner live there. Also from a business perspective, Foreigners have a ... Reputation I'll call it, regarding Not paying rent. If you're a Japanese tenant, you've got checks and bounds that makes NOT being paid the rent almost physically impossible -- Landlords usually have tenant's Parent's contact information, they have 2-3-4 months of deposit, they have a Guarantor company, they have 1-2 months of Key money,. they have a realtor managing them, they have the backing of their employer, The list goes on and on and on. With a random foreigner, You might only have a few of these, if any at all, and they're usually pretty apprehensive regarding 3+ months of deposit and key money, to the point where the financial risk for a foreigner, relatively speaking, is much higher than it would be for a Japanese tenant. If you're like me and you have have your Japanese company sign the rental lease, and you can speak decent Japanese with the realtor, the landlord, and the building management company, and you're well established in Japan and you've got a Japanese person who can vogue for you being clean and quiet, and can check all the boxes for security and legitimacy, Japanese landlords mostly have no problem renting to a foreigner in that situation. As just about Everything here in Japan, If you're well established, if you jump through the hoops, if you can check all the boxes, if you do things the right way (by the book) and blend with the Japanese cultural way of doing things, it's pretty simple, fast, and easy to do just about anything. Conversely if you don't know what you're doing, GOOD LUCK, because you're probably not even going to find the first step no matter how hard you try, Let alone climb it.

In an apartment where I used live, I remember getting several letters of notification for unpaid bills sent to the last tenants from foreign countries who used to live there. It was not just one person but several people. (Because I lived in a shared apartment where many foreign residents also resided.) When their time was over in Japan, they just flew away from the country, not taking care of the last bills. I’m not justifying the actions of the landowner who deny foreign residents, but I wonder if this happens often to other landlords here, and if that’s why they are not willing to take in foreign residents. Anecdote, but I lived in Japan for several years and never experienced this. If the train thing does happen, it comes more from a place of social awkwardness or wanting to avoid social interaction in another language that they don’t know. It’s not hate. The rental issue is somewhat different. Some landlords are afraid that foreigners will up and leave the country with no notice, thus sticking the landlord with a bunch of issues. Some Japanese people may actually discriminate, but it is a small, small minority. Enough so that I never experienced this.

??? Been here for 8 years and I've never encountered any of these without an underlying reason. Stores saying no to foreigners tend to have some really bad history with "social media influencers" or overly entitled tourists that they've had enough and chose to ban foreigners in general as to not cause unnecessary commotion/ hiccups for the ither customers. A similar case I've seen was how some tourists are exclaiming how they felt discriminated for being made to wait outside a pharmacy for not wearing mask. Crazy thing is, when I went there (around Asakusa area), the whole no mask no entry thing is upheld for EVERYONE, not just foreigners; i.e. more of a ground rule, and the clerks were more than polite to ask and provide service at the store entrance going as far as bringing multiple options of a medicine/ supplement that I was looking for. I'm not saying racism doesn't exist, nobody can be that naive. That said, these behavior isn't the norm and are often overblown simply because it's such a rare and unheard of instance for the most part.

To be honest, I'm not the type of person to get upset over a small things like this. And to be honest, everyone's a little racist so I really don't take anything personally anymore. As a mixed person in the US I've been told I'm not black or white and it's got into a point where I don't even care anymore. I mean yeah it sucks but at the same time what am I going to do? I'm the one being discriminated against there's nothing I can really do so mine as well. Just be happy with the way I'm treated. And another thing I thought of, why does everyone get upset when a country does something wrong? I see a bunch of people saying that America is bad and although it is, is anywhere actually better? My answer to that is no. This world is crap. There is no better place that you can go to. You could bring up statistics like " less people die in Britain than in the US" okay cool, one there's still people dead and two are you going to walk up to the families of the people that died saying " hey, I know your son's dead but at least he didn't die in America so we're doing pretty well". And another thing, why do we dig into the history of countries and bring it up to say that it's a crappy country? Every country has skeletons in their closet and every country is equally as bad as everyone else. So I don't get why people blame one country when I'm pretty sure if you look into history you could see something screwed up as well.

But I know too many people who have been to Japan and experienced some type of microaggression. It could be a cultural thing that gets lost in translation. If you're from an Anglo country, like the US or somewhere in Latin America where people tend to be friendly to everyone, going to place more guarded like Japan may give you culture shock. the actual reason for Japanese apartments being unwilling to rent out spaces to foreigners is that many foreigners don't "fit-in" to Japanese standards and ruin the kitchen, the room, and the entire building in worse cases, by cooking with grease, and not disposing of waste correctly. Furthermore, in many cases foreigners have become the source of complaints from everyone else for having parties or just being so damn loud and annoying to neighbors, resulting in "gai-jin renters" usually causing a significant net-loss of revenue for the owners. It isn't racism, it's just a lack of Japanese common sense by many foreigners.

I honestly don't blame the Japanese for not wanting to take American tenants as they are also considered a Flight Risk they can simply get on a plane and leave the country without paying their rent! so it's a calculated risk accepting them, which really sucks if you are a resident and look like a foreigner! The best thing you can do is learn the language and explain to your landlord that you are a resident and don't plan on leaving also important to keep your ID on you at all times wall in Japan as police officers will harass foreigners who look like they don't belong there and based on the justice system you can't prove that you have a residency, or a departure date, you're in hot water! Also most foreigners don't take the time to learn the trash system which lends itself to the messy problem! you have to sort your Plastics, your biodegradables, your papers, and your cardboards, into separate piles and memorize which days which type of trash is picked up! And no cheating and throwing away your trash in convenience store trash cans! that specifically for convenience store trash! And honestly I probably wouldn't want to sit next to an American on a train either! and I am one! even if it isn't BO the intense smells of cologne and perfume can also be offensive to the Japanese people! I personally have hypersensitivity to strong odors so I can relate to their plight! Also Americans are very loud on trains is no different then being in your house which can also lend itself to being obnoxious to the Japanese it is tradition to keep to yourself and be quiet and respectful of others while on the train! It's nothing personal they're just worried you're going to do something they won't have ability to handle as the Japanese people are non-confrontational it's simply better to avoid situation all together!

@@lifeinjapan1592 But there is a general difference in behavior, no, between gaikokujin and Japanese? For example, say there is a guy hitting on a woman. She smiles and says "I'll think about it", "thank you for the offer", "you're very kind, thank you," but he presses her until she is forced to say "no" (something incredibly rude and immoral here in Japan), or maybe she doesn't even say no and gets borderline raped. If you are a gambling man, would you gamble that the clueless man is a foreigner or Japanese? Or as a milder and simpler example, say there is a person who steps into Japanese house with its delicate tatami floors who doesn't even take his/her shoes off. He just walks all over the place and causes hundreds to thousands of dollars worth of damage to the home. If you are gambling person, would you bet that this person is foreigner or Japanese? And I realize maybe this is even the heart of what racism is about. But why should Japanese take very real and statistical risk of far more women getting raped, floors ruined, bar brawls, higher crime rates that spill onto the streets (street crime is almost non-existent here), on account of some ideal of being so open to everybody which has more cons than pros? Why should we open up our arms to people who come here thinking they own this country to the point where they can't even be bothered to learn how to ask where the toilet is in our language while they harass women left and right, do not respect our customs, drive like lunatics, stand on escalator on the wrong side, get into fights over petty things, etc? Why should we gamble on the idea that the rest of the world will make ours a better place when the majority come here with no respect for our customs and ways with the exception of a select few? We are not land of freedom and opportunity like US. I can understand why US accepts everyone across the world, and I think they are wonderful that way. But we are not US. Our society is held by delicate threads with the assumption that people know what is proper and not proper. US is freedom land but freedom land is also a land where everyone can act the way they want and their ultimate goal is to learn to get along in spite of this (and they have never done so well in what I can narrowly perceive of this). Our idea of getting along is everyone largely acts and speaks in public the same way. Japan is not land where you can act the way you want -- it is very disruptive to our culture. We do not advertise Japan as freedom land where you can just do whatever the hell you want; if anything I think we advertise opposite way but people still come here thinking they can do whatever they want. Then those same people who condemn us as racist do not bother to scold those who come here like they own this country saying and doing whatever they want. I had American friend in Navy who I introduced to dinner party and he just openly shouted to my Taiwanese friend who was homosexual, "Hey, why the F* do you pluck and paint your eyebrows? Are you gay?" Then I had to change topic very quickly to try to protect both of their feelings while taking aside my Taiwanese friend and apologizing that he is American and doesn't know what he is saying, then taking American friend and teaching him that this is so rude in our culture to say and also that my Taiwanese friend is homosexual. It is exhausting sometimes. We largely obsess with social harmony and there is no greater disruptive than a foreign force to it. Some Japanese are, indeed, social morons but there is no disruptive force to society I've ever found nearly as great as foreign people, and that's not say all foreign people are this way, but why take this risk on the account of the minority of foreign people who respect Japanese culture and try to understand it when so many don't even bother? That said, I try to embrace foreign people as much as I can. But the majority of them are toxic to Japanese society. Every single person who can't even be bothered to learn basic Japanese and comes here thinking they're hot stuff is so toxic to Japanese culture, and that's hardly the minority. Apologies for my bad English; I am trying to learn as much English as I can to try to communicate these thoughts to outside people as clearly as I can.

@@darkengine5931 The things you said are also 100% true, I am sorry that you had to experience some gaijins who misbehave in Japan. I am a gaijin who was brought up in Japan, studied in a Japanese 小学校 till 高校 and I am still young. I also don’t like Gaijins who do not make an effort to learn the language or the culture and just only involved in their own respective cultures and society even being in Japan. My father is also one of them. He can speak Japanese, but he can’t read a word and he’s in Japan from late 1980’s. You see, plenty much time to learn Japanese when he was still young and perhaps marry a Japanese women (I wanted to be born as half though haha) and get involved in the culture, but no he didn’t. His friends are also like that. On the other hand, not all gaijins are like this, for example me. That is why I don’t want Japanese people to judge only on the basis of skin colour because there are gaijins that are better integrated in to Japanese society than the Japanese themselves. You see my point? I also hate gaijins who don’t make effort to learn the culture of Japan even after being for a long time in Japan and I also don’t like those Japanese people who judge you on your appearance and make comments about you without even talking to you and get knowing to you first. So either way you see where it’s going? And don’t bring up US into this conversation because US is a wonderful country with amazing people (I know there are safety issues but still) I think the society and quality of life is better in US as compared to Japan. However I can agree that the average Japanese society is much more disciplined than the US people, but I have seen people not helping others in time of need in Japan just because they think it is 迷惑 to them, which is a fucked up mentality, so Japanese people need to step out their comfort zone because sometimes it feels like they are robots disguised as humans, working 24/7 and following the others even if they are wrong. Specifically Eastern Japan, the people are so weird here. Just because it is a collectivist society doesn’t mean that it is right. There are many Japanese people who don’t want to live in Japan because of this reason. I don’t know why are you defending this aspect of Japan because it is the only aspect which is harming and will continue to harm Japan in the future. Don’t get me wrong, Japanese culture is great, but society? Nah. It needs to be changed for the sake of Japanese people.

This is more related to them not wanting to cause trouble or have a misunderstanding due to language barriers. You can’t speak their language and they can’t speak yours so why would they jump at an opportunity to have monthly uncomfortable situation with you when they can rent to others with less issues. I would make the same choice. Even in America I am not required to rent to you if I have concerns about you as a tenant.

You can't rent a decent apartment without a guarantor, who is supposed to pay up I you fail to do so or cause damage. Needless to say, very few foreigners have a guarantor, and if they fail to pay the rent and leave the country, the owners can't get their money. So there's a good deal of logic behind the "no gaijin" policy, but it hurts badly.

In my opinion, Gaijin Seat : foreigners tend to have bigger bodies and to spread their legs widely when they sit. So sometimes I kinda feel pushed by them sitting next to me and feel uncomfortable…you know, train seats in Japan are not yet to be designed for world standard. But mostly I dont mind cuz they are getting to know about Japan’s customs and they close legs lately as many of Japanese do. Rent Issue : My parents used to be open for foreigners to rent a house but one foreigner left and went back to his country without any notice or payment for the last 2 months. And it was impossible to trace him and force him to pay. Like the banning foreigners in Kyoto street, a small number of foreigners lowers the reputation of all of foreigners who are hunting flats…sadly.

Yea, versus america find asians very polite as "model minority" yet people still find reasons to be unreasonably racist and violent towards asians while fetishizing them. Kinda weird. But not all americans are like that. Plus I'm sure many foreigners from different countries behave weird in japan due to lack of interaction that cpuld possibly stems from language barrier. But asians would less likely behave like that in america despite of language barrier due to the way they were raised to behave in general. Or they would most of the time just learn the language itself Japanese are very clean and polite. Despite myself being an asian, I would probably feel pressure in japan at first if I ever chose to live there. It's just that many foreigners think they can just come to japan and yoink a waifu or something like that. Something similar is happening in korea with women all around the world, yet many don't realise not all korean man are gentleman just like any other countries. Here in Canada, we don't like letting some white folks rent due to being very noisy and... not hygienic by experience. But we still let them rent because some asian folks in our city really like drama/being nosy.

if you’re smart enough to understand their culture and to get fluent in Japanese, there won’t be such problem. If you got steadiness in your income and your behavior, there won’t be such problem. gaijin seat is considered to be racism in Japan but it’s from simple reasons. since 99% of the population here in Japan is Japanese, it’s difficult to even see one foreigner in a day, we basically have anxiety against any other races, which is defined as xenophobic. there could be cultural misunderstanding or language barrier so, gaijin seats or any other avoidance are likely to be happening in public and it’s inevitable. so if there’s any foreigners coming to Japan, its your job to understand their culture and the reasons behind gaijin seats. and if you’re actually planning on moving to Japan, gaining their respects and understanding will be your job cuz you are the one going into their territory. lastly, thx for reading this long sentence. hope you visit Japan and have fun

I can't really comment on example 2 because I've never had any personal experience regarding that but from what I know about a japanese not wanting to sit next to a foreigner is that in a lot of cases, it doesn't have to do with rascism but more with the fact that (most) japanese people don't have a really noticable body odor so they feel surprised and uncomfortable when they perceive the, for them, unusually strong scent of foreigners.

@@galaxybabyz6592 Really!? Actually, what made Japan un-nerving for me is how xenophobic it is, while the racism was kept under covers so some Japan lovers literally can't see it. One girl on twitcast said she didn't like foreigners, but she said it in a very nice way. Instead of getting mad when I said "sabetsu!" she said "sabetsu janai, kuubetsu da yo!"(not discrimination, making a distinction). One girl on twitcast started coughing in a very conspicious like as if she was disgusted, after I introduced myself, and I asked "gaikokujin ga nigate desuka" and she then completely changed her tune and was welcoming, but I was confused and left. I got a streamer girl on twitcast saying "gaikokujin kinshi" to me (and she said it with disgust), but I told her and her listeners hey maybe one day they can come to my channel so maybe she thought I was stealing her listeners maybe. One of her listeners was interested in me, but then after he heard the main streamer disliked me called me names for asking if "gaikoku kinshi" was discrimination. I've seen a salary woman say Chinese are subhuman, but she was having trouble in her workplace and was stressed talking to me a foreigner. The thing is that after she blocked me when I told her that not all Chinese are bad and that in America she would be matomo ja nai, all of her listeners supported her (even after one of them said "wow you got mad"). The interaction was auto-recorded by twitcast, but I don't think I should link to it...

As someone of Japanese (partial) descent I can tell you for a fact that in Japan it does. Japanese people see all foreigners as a separate race. Even Asians who look like them such as Koreans and Chinese. In Japan there is a term for mixed Japanese called "Hafu", but it is just a word. In reality nobody is half Japanese. You are either 100% Japanese or you are not. So mixed Japanese always default to their non Japanese side race/identity wise. Sometimes Japanese people are astounded by Hafu who speaks fluent Japanese. It's like... "My gawd your Japanese is soo good". Yet, many of these people were born in Japan. Racism is actually much worse than you can imagine in Japan. You would be shocked about what is said behind closed doors in Japanese.
