I didn't think it was an excavation with academics. I read they were doing only a small excavation on the outer part because the moat needs to be rebuilt one day. I don't think they will ever let the excavation of the actual tomb. I'd love to see what's inside that storehouse in Nara one day too. I read they found Roman glass in it, but they don't like putting many things on display.

I hope so. I'm not a fan of grave-robbing though. (I know, a terrible flaw for an anthropologist.) So hopefully they can either re-inter the dead and their grave goods as they were and only display replicas of the grave goods, photos, etc. I do not believe the bones of the dead deserve to be shut away in sterile, numbered drawers. At least, not permanently. Ideally, once all applicable research has been done, they should always be reburied in the original graves or a new place, like a grave monument made for that set of dead if the original site doesn't exist anymore.

Monarchies were meant to be closely connected with god. This was the big reason many monarchies held such high authority. In asia, almost every monarchy is connected with religion. For example-the former kings of Nepal were said to be an avatar of God Vishnu himself. Thailand's king is also a God king. Now although jimmu maybe never was related to gods, the mere fact that Japan maintained to keep a continuous succession only male line is pretty amazing👏👏

Western monarchy isn't solely reliant on ancestry, divine or otherwise - it also stems from Romano-Byzantine ideas of divine right which means whoever you are, and however lowly a class you may have been born into, if you're top dog, it's the will of god.

I'm aware, it explains both the Turkish Claim to the Roman Empire after the conquest of Constantinople, and the descendants of Romano-Byzantine Nobles attempting to reconquer Anatolia repeatedly until the Russian Civil War. My comment was to draw parallel examples of early examples of politically charged historical and theological revisionism, in a silly and easily understandable manner.

Indeed they are, along with several other nation's Royal lines, and, by some distance, the pre-Norman British ones. On a similar note, George V and Nicolas II of Russia were first cousins, and looked/acted similarly enough that when they wanted a laugh in overseas visits they would sometimes swap clothes and regalia, and see how long it took people to realize that something was off! :)

One of the interesting things about many Animist traditions is that divine entities can be both pre-existing entities that create, as well as spontaneously generated entities that then go on to create, with Humans often being described as either/or both created or spontaneously generated entities, that go on to create more entities out of either personal/social reason, consequence, accident, or habit.

Good stuff. I wonder if you know that the Buddhist statue of which thou speaketh (2:24) was resuscitated, fished from a river by a passing fellow, who took it home and built a temple for it (the storied Zenko-ji temple in Nagano)? We're not allowed to see it, although we can touch it in the dark. Fab temple though. I once sat there, in the main hall, during a midsummer sunrise as the Monks chanted esoteric hymns. I'm not a Buddhist but that gave me a huge buzz.

I've read from at least seven different sources that talk about early worship of a sun kami that might have been Ohirume before Amaterasu came into the picture. And all say that we don't know what the early versions of the myths were since we couldn't recover any texts from before Nihon Shoki. But if we don't have texts of the earlier myths and no one bothered to maintain the pre-Buddhist myths in an oral tradition, how do we know the pre-Buddhist beliefs???

Thank you for clarifying that. I've always found the myths in the Nihonshoki & the Kojiki to be lacking, & the belief in Amaterasu lackluster (pun intended). I'd like to know where you got all this information from. Are your sources Japanese or from other scholars/ folklorists? Thank you for these videos & keep up the good work. They really are the BEST resource for early Japanese history online, & now you're diving into national myths (MYTHS being the operative word) which is sure to ruffle the feathers of a few nationalist trolls. LOL

Thanks for the kind words! I got the info in this video from Cambridge History of Japan and 2 academic papers. They're in English, though one of the papers was written by a Japanese professor.

4:50 Actually something like that happen I mean Precolonial cultures believed in their gods and when christianism arrived to America it had to made people believe so what they did was that the gods of the precolinial cultures were the same as the christian gods like inti(the gos of the sun) was God

I really like like 99% of your videos, so I don't want to criticise you. But i think that talking about one's country foundation myth or religion or whatever and firmly deny them is kinda rude, like I am very sure you know there are people who still believe the emperor is divine and still believe that all and every emperor descended from Emperor Jimmu. That case can be applied to a lot of nations, not just Japan. So i think this myths should remain how they are, and I think a lot of people especially officials believe same as me, because they don't allow excavations on Imperial Tombs, a process that probably would tell when the Yamato Dinasty Starts. Thanks for reading and for posting this videos, i really enjoy them , but I hope you understand my point of view

Thanks for your comment, I'm glad you like the videos =). I hear you, it is not my intention to be rude, and of course I think the myths should remain. I don't want to ban them, not even sure how you would do that =P. At the same time, the divine descent story is a myth, it involves a supernatural kami. I know I'll get some hate, but I can't honestly say that divine descent is literally true, and neither do the scholars who write about the myth and how it evolved. I think shielding the myth from criticism and analysis does a disservice to the truth. Your mention of the prohibition on imperial tomb excavation is an example. I'm saddened that the knowledge in those tombs has been kept from the world for so long, even knowledge unrelated to Imperial descent. That said, the purpose of the video is NOT to point out that the myth is wrong, that's only a small part of it. The primary reason is to talk about the fascinating analyses on how the myth came about and what political/religious forces shaped it into its current form. I think we can appreciate the myths and their impact, regardless of whether or not they are true. I hope you can see where I am coming from too. This post turned out longer than expected. Cheers!

There is kind of a parallel between east and west isnt there? First there was a polythestic religion where the tribes/clans claim to descended fom and then a major monothestic religion come in and get the glory. Still I think the main difference is that japan and by extension the whole far east is more stubborn, conservative and not so fond of change than the west.

So the Korean founders were the children of the gods... or in the language of the gods, "goa'uld." And "Korea" over time became "Kree" (as in "Jaffa! Kree!"). Ancient aliens confirmed.
