The people of Eastern Japan who were not under the control of the Yamato Empire were called Emishi. In this way, the Yamato Empire was able to justify their conquest. It is the same as the history of other countries. It's the same as the ancient Roman Empire and the city-state of ancient Greece.

Short answer: Many of them were great at horse fighting and were hired as Samurais. Kiyohara, Abe, Fujiwara are some of the former Emishi-clans that ruled northeast Japan until 12th century. Former PM Abe is said to be from the famous Abe clan.

Welp, I'm gettin' the popcorn out. Red and Blue (and possibly Cyan and Yellow) I think all have HEMA experience. Blue has a Classics degree, and has dissected a lot of battles for strategy.
