When the Han Emperors in China ran out of daughters to marry off to Barbarian chiefs, they would adopt. Your standing as a barbarian chief (and how much trouble you could cause) determined if you got an adopted daughter, one from a minor concubine, or one from a consort.
@Cici-Nio2
@Cici-Nio2 10 ай бұрын
Every time I hear Fujiwara all hear is the "If you didn't know, The Fujiwara clan famously married their daughter into the imperial family, allowing them control over the heian court for 200 years". Edit: That fact I was able to write this from memory really say something.

The people of Eastern Japan who were not under the control of the Yamato Empire were called Emishi. In this way, the Yamato Empire was able to justify their conquest. It is the same as the history of other countries. It's the same as the ancient Roman Empire and the city-state of ancient Greece.

Short answer: Many of them were great at horse fighting and were hired as Samurais. Kiyohara, Abe, Fujiwara are some of the former Emishi-clans that ruled northeast Japan until 12th century. Former PM Abe is said to be from the famous Abe clan.
