@@zawadsadaf9194 It's an odd thing they do where they give some arbitrary number of years for how long it takes to "master" a specific dish, but good chefs can "master" (whatever that means in any given culture) any one dish in far less time than 8 years. Obviously it takes skill, like being good at anything. But come on..it's sliced smoked and basted eel, its a pretty basic dish. There will be guys in their 4th year as good as the "masters" on their 8th, its just how it is sometimes, but the guy that is on his 4th can't be called a master? It's clearly a gimmick

Tbf it's kinda true tho. Chefs don't just make one serving, they need to pump out probably dozens or hundreds at a constant rate. If they mismanaged their attention, it'll get overcooked and chewy or it'll be undercooked and slimy. It's especially true if they're dealing with delicate meat like eals

Had this in Japan. Can't recall where exactly. But it was darn delicious. It was expensive so the budget didn't allow for seconds 😅 .... But a memorable day because of it.

@@cinc3167 of course it was because of the food my friend. It was this fish and the noodles soup from ichiran ikibukuro (you can search this one for some photos) ... For some reason, every trip i go, food is always on the top of my want to experience. That and bars. Then food again after drinking. 🤷🏾

@@babatunde9992 right. Right. I get what you mean. I personally never cooked eels so i don't know if it's easy to make. But I've tried eels in other countries and they tend to taste the same. The sauce is probably the most important ingredient in this dish. Maybe.

Every country has their version of luxury food that their famous for. Japan kind of takes that concept and ramps it up to the extreme. If there’s a dish then there is an even more luxurious version. It’s kind of funny though considering it’s only luxurious if the animal was treated well before being shipped off to the slaughterhouse.

Yeah the video makes it seem like it’s expensive bc of the labor intensive preparation. It’s actually bc it’s not sustainable. Same with many other fishes used in sushi.

From what I know it's expensive because eel farmers still haven't found a way to artificially reproduce it, what they do though is catch glass eel(baby eels) from rivers in spring season I think, then let them grow in farms.

It's actually intresting they first use a needle to pierce the head of the fish making it brain dead so the fish doesn't feel any pain even though the body still moves.

As a Japanese, I think I need to say this. Eels in Japan are sooooooooo tasty! Delicious as f! And yes as she said it costs a bit too much. However, we have a tradition to eat those eels in summer, which means that it will be cheaper in winter. So I shall advise you guys that try this treasure from the ocean when it’s cold.

Alot comments on how long it takes to master something with a passion. If you ever watched anything from Japan, most of the work take a long time to master. Look at how they make sushi, knives, swords, or hand made furniture. You can see how much they take their time and the passion they put in their work. Definitely appreciate how they work

I’ve tried smoked eel here in NZ, it was just out of a local river….. it was absolutely delicious, this was about 20 years ago and haven’t had the chance to try it again.

This is one of my most favorite foods ever ❤️😂🤤 I can eat this anytime of day. It is pricey though, no matter where you get it. There are some places in hawaii, where I live, that make it soo good. Im literally salivating now lol

I LOVE eel, I'd spend my money away on this at least once 1, to all those people who think they cut it up alive don't worry! The narrator didn't mention it but they put a needle through its head to instantly render it close to dead. It's merciful and after that they don't feel pain for the entire process. 2, Its okay if you don't like eel, it's not for everybody :D just don't harass other people for liking it. 3, if you want to try eel they're not THIS expensive. You can get a good and basically the same experience from cheaper places. This is just me, but i think it's the sauce that makes the big diff.

Most people would think, we need to let the baby eels live so they can reproduce and make more eels for the future... But in Japan... If larger eels are gone... Let's take all the baby eels before they can even reproduce so the future is even less eels, until their are none left...

@@garchompmunchesscythes5383 Yeah We use to buy fresh fish alive and keep it in our bathtub till christmas BUT we didnt cook it alive! Instead we made a quick cut to the head first. 1. I dont really care what culture youre from. If this culture prioritises freshness over unnecessary suffering you guys are behind in therms of morality. 2. What difference does couple of seconds make in therms of taste / freshness anyway? Cause its a big difference for the eal - I guarantee. 3. Life fish in plastic bag with no water? I rest my case... Lets just say you didn't really make it less shocking by saying "its normal for us". "Thats how we do it" - is not a "get out of jail free card". -Why are you kicking this dog, Its in pain?! -Nono its ok, its normal for us to tenderise the meet while its still fresh, dont worry about it, its ok - thats how we do it here.

Multiple dishes are made like that. Some even boiled alive or whatever. If you wanna go full on with this, then any animal product is kinda insane. Abused and murdered for taste pleasure.

I have eaten normal eel sushi roles and let me say, that shit is amazing. It is a weird taste but hot eel sushi is so good highly recommend

Being cruel is expensive. Prepare it while it's alive for freshness 😞. I'll rather eat stale food all my life than get such freshness. They say it right, when the food isn't good enough to stand on it's own just create drama to uplift it. Italian, Chinese, Indian, Mexicans serve good food without any drama. Japanese, French sell expensive drama and bland food.

This is why there is a lack of eel in Europe. The Portugese fishers catch the baby eel migrating from the Sargasso Sea to Northen Europe and export them to Japan where they are grown in eel farms. None of those eels reach maturity and return to the Sargasso to spawn, and it will probably mean that the eel will be extinct within a decade.

Why is the church so rich when one of the main teachings is to give your money to those who need it? It’s all hypocrisy, and it makes the people at the top of the church very very rich. The hospital doesn’t constantly try to convince you that you’re evil, and the only way to avoid literal eternal torture is to do whatever they say when they say it. The hospital also doesn’t cover up and defend rampant sexual abuse and molestation.

It's actually intresting they first use a needle to pierce the head of the fish making it brain dead so the fish doesn't feel any pain even though the body still moves.

Some of those eels come from the USA Maine USA to be exact! My father is an eel fisherman i used to have a license too but let mine laps one year. If you dont purchase your license one year on accident you'll never be able to get a license again. Bummer 😞! On average we get paid 2000$ a pound for the baby eels we catch,we catch them in fyke nets which we set in the mouths of streams and rivers, where the stream dumps into the ocean is where we put our nets. The streams are freshwater but when they meet the ocean it mixes but is mostly saltwater. We call them glass eels or elvers. The baby's swim from the sargasso sea off the coast of Florida they swim north to New england so they are born in saltwater but swim into freshwater where they live until they are adults and or longer but at some point they swim back to the sargasso sea and give birth and the baby's swim back to their parents home stream or river, pretty crazy cycle similar to salmon! Fun fact,eels move all over the frying pan while cooking them. They will be gutted and headless but they still slither all over the pan!😱 In the state of Maine to clean an eel for cooking because they are so slimy and move & slither even after death so to clean and gut them we nail there head to a tree while using plyers to pull the skin off of the body! Anyone who has ever tried to clean an eel understands why we use this method! Anyway hope this was informative 😉😁
