I do remember my Japanese Culture teacher telling us this that with Japanese people, you gotta read between the lines since they get pretty subtle or passive with you instead of the Western way of being confrontational. She told us one time with her neighbors, one mother had a son who was always loud and then one time the other neighbor talked to the mother and the neighbor said that their son sure likes to sing a lot. So then the mother quickpy apologized and bowing. So the neighbor meant that the song was always being loud.

@@morphsuitmeele1171 for hikikomori, its mainly on the old golden rule of Japan "the nail that sticks out will be hammered down" and people who deviated from societal norms and didnt comply with their conformist society were shunned upon, thus tought people to be more wary and overtime they learned to avoid such unwanted feelings of being judged, not everyone wanted to be a salary man or a yamato nadeshiko, therefore they defied yet the rules struck them down. However Japan is seeing light at the end of the tunnel as more youth in this day are communicating of their problems in the internet and starting to be more open to each other, learning that "no we dont have to be this way", and Japan is starting to be more accepting, slowly but surely, baby steps, Japan.

I remember when I studied abroad in Tokyo, I turned in one of my papers late to my study abroad advisor. This woman gave me the meanest mom face I have EVER...seen. It was very clear that she was upset without directly saying so. I was really young at the time, so the due date slipped my mind. Same with my Japanese language teacher then. Students wouldn't stop talking and she also made the same mom face. xD Class went quiet instantly.

Maybe not the same but when I worked at a restaurant in Tokyo I had a manager that had a bad day (well, actually a bad attitude in general but I digress) and decided to take it out on me. After berating me for not being ashamed that I was over 30, unmarried, and a foreigner he waved his hand at me and loudly told me "もう帰れ!". Confused over his behaviour and this weird order I did what he told me, I said "お疲れ様です", changed clothes and went home in the middle of the dinner rush as a I walked past a fuming but speechless manager. This brought endless amusement to the chefs who were laughing their butts off all evening despite being yelled at by the manager. The chefs told me that apparently what I should have done was to counter with an apology and work even harder. That the manager was a creep that mistreated his foreign staff (he once bit me in the nipple in front of customers and kept touching my butt whenever he had the chance), so it was satisfying knowing the restaurant disappeared not long after I quit.

I grew up in both MN and the South of the USA. The first statement you made, "I wish you would have told me sooner/ earlier" is super angry. The second one would be, Oh thank you for pointing that out to me, or well aren't you a Darling for pointing that out. Don't have anything for 3. On the fourth, in the North we might tap on the shoulder for a line,, but standing too close just has us moving away. In the South, we will most likely tell you lines are back there, and if your too close, depending on the situation, try to get help. The fifth is universal in the USA. Whatever. The bounce is probably going to fit anyone anywhere. We just say ENOUGH or enough.

I don’t think this is representative of Japanese guys at all, it’s just the only time that comes to mind.

Lol sounds to me like he was more angry at himself for being unable to get himself a girl, but just taking it out on you instead because it's always easier to blame someone else (kind of a nasty habit I've seen now and then with Japanese men...). I had a colleague who'd go out of his way to be rude to me (mind you he was like 28 and I was 19), just because I could speak English and I didn't creep out female colleagues. I always brushed/laughed it off because I can't take such people seriously, especially if they're way older than you.

That number two is definitely the worst. So its literally one person that doesn't care enough to get the second one angry, to which the second replies with sarcastic remark. I doubt that's the good way to politely show that you're angry, because I doubt that the first person will just think: Oh right, that's my fault, he really has a reason to be angry. More than likely the first person will reply with another sarcastic remark. If this was "land of savages" the director would get a reply: You got a problem? Definitety the worst of the list. On the other hand, the director was totally at fault imho.
