He's not trying to coach, he just wants to control everything. He's unwilling to bring in experts who can draft, experts who can coach, and experts who can discipline. This team is very poorly disciplined. They know that Jerry has the final say, so they don't fear getting cut by a coach. Jerry needs to hire a strong coach, get the F out of his way, and let the man bring him championships!

Jerry Jones is a modern day Al Davis (of whom I think Jerry was an admirer). His method achieved great success in the beginning but at some point it all falls apart. Because whenever an owner has too much control over the day to day football operation it's bound to fall apart.

I think 90s Cowboys win 1 more Super Bowl in the 90s if they don't fire Johnson. I bet Brett Favre is forever grateful with Jerry Jones ego because I doubt the Packers win a superbowl in the 90s with Jimmy leading the Cowboys since they were his biggest nightmare. That OU team from 86- 88 was 33 and 0 against college football and 0 - 3 against Jimmy Johnsons Canes. The following year after they lost a lot of high-end talent to the NFL. They got hosed at Notre Dame coached by that clown Lou Holtz . Either Cleveland Gary scored on a touchdown or was down on the one yard line. Of course the call went to the Irish and the Canes lost 31 -30, going for a 2 point conversion. The Canes finished number 2 in the polls. Ehhh I mean not many owners can say they had as much success with their teams as much as Jerry has. I think the message here is pride comes before a fall. It’s so easy to become prideful and arrogant when everything is going great that you forget everything and everyone that got you there because you start thinking you were the only reason for the success. The fall of man makes you rethink everything. I think we all go through that falling state, it’s just it took Jerry damn near 30 years to actually get it lol.

Yeah I get sick of hearing by week 4 or five "here comes America's Team" and listening to all those high paid broadcasters spouting it is now their time. And you and I know after watching football for 50 years you start to see the weaknesses and "they don't fix it" and it then shows up in the end. I bet heavy on GB because SF showed me that Dallas had no run defense, Bills too, and they did not fix and I bet on Aaron Jones to run rapid Also Dallas front and LB's are to small for running teams. Everybody banged the table how good their pass rush was BUT watching every SB winner or run up for 50 years had/has balanced teams in all phases. Results showed yesterday

It’s even more absurd when micromanagers at firms don’t have a widely known reputation for being bad managers and luck out by hiring one of the best and brightest only to have that person quit and take a similar gig at a competitor all because said owner/micromanager was too ‘busy’ and unavailable. This of course is after the new hire becomes frustrated when no one will show them the processes and ways to efficiently do things as is the norm for that particular firm. Said managers also are usually Ill tempered and often resort to yelling obscenities, especially so if they are women.

As a 49er fan, i was incredibly grateful that Jimmy was pushed out by Jerry. The Cowboys had in my opinion one of the best pass rushers in (ex 49er) Charles Haley (5 time Superbowl winner) and man, that O-line opened massive holes for Emmitt. This team could not be stopped. IMO, Steve Young could not win a Superbowl until Switzer took over. Jimmy was a coach who always upped the standard and pushed his players to greatness. But taking a team to multiple Superbowls takes its toll and when you have a meddling owner the pressure can get to you. Bill Walsh also retired a few years early because of the pressure of winning.

The 91-95 Cowboys won because they had the best offensive line in the league and one of the best defensive lines in the league. The lesson of this was never learned and never even acknowledged. The short resurgence when Parcells arrived was because he reemphasized the lines. But when he left the lines were ignored again. The Cowboys got lucky in 2016 and they ended up with the best offensive line in the league and Elliott had his best year but the O-line was allowed to fade again, so the Cowboys faded again.

I was, past tense, a Cowboys fan since 1966. They played the great Green Bay Packers in the title game. I was in the 5th grade and that year was my introduction to pro football. I watched the Cowboys religiously every year until a few years after Jimmy Johnson left the Cowboys. They simply became abhorrent! They were painful to watch! Jerry Jones and his boys have tried year after year to duplicate Jimmy Johnson's brilliance and failed miserably! Their teams are but a pimple on the butts of Landry's and Johnson's incredible teams! I really wish Jerry Jones would admit defeat and sell the Cowboys! The Cowboys may be able to rise again, but not under the Jonses! For sure, I will NEVER return to the Cowboys until the Jonses are gone!

Those few years where they were doing so well post-'95 is what has kept me going as a fan.. It's not like every single year has been bad at all. If every single year were abysmal then I'd have left a long time ago, but no, there's been plenty of good years, they just have come short in the playoffs but it's not like they're the only team that does that and there are far worse teams..look at the Washington Commanders for instance!! How would you like to be a fan of that awful team. I'm still a fan and proud of our past accomplishments.. I don't believe for one second that they'll never rise to the top again either. Jimmy built the Cowboys on trades for players who fit a need or that he tried to recruit as well as his Miami players. He also found players that were exceptional but unappreciated by their coaches.

As a lifelong Steeler fan I remember the Cowboys in the early 90s, also the Herschel Walker trade that started everything. I have never never been a Cowboys fan, but I will say this, Dallas was about to dominate the 90s, yes they were. Jimmy Johnson was a football guy that knew how to evaluate talent and I believe he got a little frustrated with Jones' meddling and Dallas has yet to recover from this breakup.

I find it interesting that they talked about how insular the front office is for the team today and how they don't listen to outside voices. Ironically that is what killed the Landry Era Cowboys as well. At one point they were innovative in a way that nobody else had been and they were doing things that nobody else had done and Landry taught and invented defensive and offensive schemes and sets that nobody else had ever done. And then they stopped innovating and they refused to bring in outside help in the scouting department and on the coaching staff and the first thing that it tanked was the draft classes that were coming in and then it started causing problems in the offensive and defensive sets. The difference between then and now is that Landry and Schramm and Brandt recognized that they had a big problems and were starting to take steps to try and fix things. You see that when they hired Paul Hackett to come in and run the offense in 86. Before Danny broke his wrist in week 9 that year Dallas had the number one rated offense in the league. Of course Pelleur put an end to that. The last draft of the Landry Era produced a HOF player in Irvin a multiyear Pro Bowler in Ken Norton Jr and a solid multiyear defensive lineman in Chad Henning. Other players were already on hand as well like Kevin Gogan and Nate Newton who would help anchor that offensive line in the 90s. I'm not saying they were going to take the team back to the Super Bowl but I am saying they were trying to change. Now though.... Jerry just keeps doing the same shit over and over again and expecting a better result. That's the definition of insanity. It's also the mark of a leader without his own creativity or ability to innovate.

Colin you hit the nail on the head with Jerry. I have been blogging on every media outlet how Jerry has found a winning combination financially with fielding a mediocre team for 27 years. Without paying a game changer type player (non drafted); again Amari withstanding. Jerry whether he knows it or not cannot duplicate the blueprint that Jimmy and Norv established. Now that his team value is 8B I don’t think he cares if they win another SB. He is a business man first and a football owner/fan/ football guy second. He figured he can field a mediocre team year after year and still be the richest sports franchise owner in the world. This all coming from a fan of the Cowboys for 50 years. I know the boys.

5 Super Bowls at the minimum. 92-95, and 98. Maybe a repeat in 99. Dallas almost went to, and would have won, the Super Bowl in 94, and Jimmy would have drafted Randy Moss. The one thing that Jimmy staying would not have stopped would be down years in 1996 and 1997. Regardless if Jimmy had left or not, the one thing that he wouldn't have prevented is injuries. More specifically the big injuries that hurt Dallas for the 96 and 97 season were TE Jay Novacek's back injury, causing him to miss all of 96 and retire after that, and Emmitt's various injuries during those 2 years. The "370 Rule" was eventually going to catch up to Emmitt, regardless if Jimmy stayed or not. But nonetheless Jimmy would have drafted Moss, and that would have gotten Dallas back to being an elite offense at the end of the 90s. The ironic thing is that if you go look at the 98 Cowboys offense's stats and compare that to the 97 Vikings, they are very similar. From PPG to individual offensive stats they are very close to each other. Moss would have done the same thing for Dallas as what he did for the Vikings. Regarding the other side of the ball, the defense was actually good for the rest of the decade, giving up only 15 ppg in 96, and 17 ppg in 98 and 99. They didn't need much more help, though Jimmy getting Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor to Dallas would had made them that much better.

@@briancusack4386 that is a very good point. He did pass on him by trading the 19th pick away while Moss was still on the Board. I think doing that was the move that Johnson did with thinking of the best interest of the Dolphins. They had already drafted a WR in the 1st Round a year prior in 97, so probably didn't feel the need to draft another WR in the 1st Round two years in a row. I think if Johnson was still in Dallas then he would have made the move that would have been in the best interest of the Cowboys, and I believe that would have been him drafting Moss.

This is a little too one sided. What they don't mention here is Jimmy was talking to Jacksonville earlier in the season, and I'm pretty sure that press conference they mention here was after Jerry found out. Jimmy's from Texas but he wanted to be back in Florida near the ocean. Jerry asked Jimmy to stay for another 5 to 10 years but Jimmy said he'd stay another year and then think about it. Jerry told Jimmy that he "wanted him here", in other words he didn't want Jimmy thinking about leaving all the time. Look at Jimmy's resume... he NEVER stayed anywhere longer than 5 years. Jimmy was not going to hang around in Dallas more than one more year. Also all that stuff about Jerry wanting his team home grown... that's just silly. Jerry got Charles Haley here, he signed Deion Sanders. Jimmy pulled off that Herschel Walker trade and fleeced the Vikings. The core of that 90s team was home grown. They drafted Aikman and Emmitt... Irvin was already here, and Aikman would have been because Landry was going to draft him first overall, but Jimmy did things like draft Steve Walsh, who was his qb in Miami, in the supplemental draft. Jimmy will say now that he never had any plans with Walsh other than to have a piece to trade for draft picks. That's baloney... Jimmy was seriously trying to decide if Walsh was better than Troy because he knew his was Miami. As it turned out Walsh wasn't anywhere close to Aikman talent-wise, but if they were close Jimmy would have traded Aikman. Steve Walsh was qb for Jimmy's first NFL win because Troy was injured. So don't think for a second that Jimmy was some loyal coach who would have coached Dallas for 15 years or something... that's not in his nature. I do know this... if Jimmy was here in 1995, there's no way the Cowboys lose to San Francisco. I had never seen that team come out so flat, and it was the players who got back into that game and went on to win the next year. Barry had nothing to do with it.

Without even watching this clip. I'll tell you how Jerry screwed up. His ego and the fact that he ran off Jimmy Johnson.

Jerry did screw up and run Jimmy off. However, Jimmy seemed to demonstrate a Coaching Job ADHD even after he left Dallas. I think it was a matter time before Jimmy got the wander lust and bolted.

The worst thing that could've happened to the Cowboys in the long run was winning that third Super Bowl under Jerry Jones. Now, obviously, no Cowboys fan will trade that Super Bowl in for anything, but what that Super Bowl did was convince Jerry that he was right, that they didn't need Jimmy Johnson and that any coach he brought in could win. Once Jerry's ego was validated, the Cowboys were doomed to be stuck in mediocrity.

Dave is exactly right. Jones is still trying to build a team like they were built 30 years ago. IT CAN'T BE DONE like that in today's NFL. That 90's team core was built before the onset of Free Agency. Jones is so out of touch it's not even funny.

Well, a huge part of it all is that teams value picks more than current roster players. Hershel walker was a good player on an average team, but he is not worth 4 years worth of picks. Lets just day you have the most valuable player in football. Whether you choose Burrows, Rodger, Malhommes, or whomever, not one of them i worth every pick you got for the next 3 years.

Hard disagree. The rams have like no picks for the next 3 years and they are in the Super Bowl.

Will never forgive Jerry Jones for ruining the Cowboys. Don't get me wrong ecstatic i got to see them win three Superbowls but 26 Superbowls later and nothing. They are a joke now, need to make big changes if not its one and done or 8-8 for the next 30 years.

That story about Jimmy being undercut by Jerry after Jimmy said turnovers can affect your playing time, also happened a few years later when Jason Garrett was asked about fumbles from a running back that the RB night not start the next week, Jerry at his conference call said that the RB would absolutely start the next week. Garrett never gave an honest answer after that, he only would talk about the 3 phases of the game.

As a longtime Cowboys fan / follower, Jimmy Johnson leaving the Cowboys after the 1994 Super Bowl was classic - self-destruction. The Cowboys have never been the same since. The only thing I question is: Jimmy Johnson does not stay in positions for very long. I question whether he can be trusted over the long term as being dependable.
