Singer-songwriter Jewel learned what emotional pain was early in life-her mother abandoned the family when she was only 8, and she was raised by an abusive father until she finally left home at just 15 years old. Because of these tumultuous early life experiences, Jewel learned to cultivate mindfulness and mental health practices that have helped protect her happiness throughout her life. In this episode, Jewel tells Alex about learning to cope with her anxiety and panic attacks, and how prioritizing her mental health has guided the most important decisions in her career.

So inspiring, a true jewel. I’m so excited to find the album. Jewel fascinated me, not letting the evils of past take precedence over now. Thank you.

She had a pretty good childhood, all in all. I believe she makes it out to be bad as a storyline behind her business efforts to sell her answers to "mental illness" . I think I am at least partly right

Jewell spends a lot of time getting her message out and it seems to be a message that rejects fame but this advertising campaign about her "miracle cures" concerning mental health sends the opposite message that she's obsessed with staying in the spotlight. Her childhood was not bad if you listen to her talking about it but better than most though unusual. Who considers it depravation to have a dad that launches your singing career when you were but 5? She lived on her own at 15 but knew her family was close by. While she gives all the impressions of being a deep thinker, she got totally hoodwinked by her own mom when she was clearly old enough to know better. I mean, Jesus, her mom wants little to do with her from 8 years on till she signed her record deal and then neverr leaves her side till Jewell realizes that her presence has put Jewell 4 million in debt when she had thought she was 100 million rich. Anyone could have seen that coming/ Clearly Jewell has been thru a lot, but has had advantages to get her to where she is many ppl would to die for. As a person who saw gods in the likes of Bob Dylan and John Prine but had to watch them age into ordinary men hanging on to what was, it takes a lot to impress me. Jewell has a great voice and can write. Her story reminds me a lot of the new sensation Sierra Ferell who left home and jumped on railroad box cars while street singing for years to survive and now has finally made it All that said, I wish Jewell the bestQ!
