It's even more sad to see him delete so many of his older videos (that TOP 20 SNES-video you mentioned: gone. Along with many other classics). It really shows that he abandoned his roots without realizing that these roots are what made him entertaining and famous in the first place.

Jontron once said it on a video with AVGN, that video games were just the means for his comedy. He is a comedian first I think, and video games are used as a means for jokes, which I'm fine with entirely. I still think his new ones are just as funny, not much has changed for me. However the newer videos in that set studio apartment, feels a bit weird, but still. As far is entertainment goes, still one of the best......however now that you mention it, I do notice myself going back to his channel to watch videos, but the ones I keep clicking on are the old ones, not the new ones.... interesting

The problem of this season of Jontron is that he tries to make it look more profesional and stylized... besides that just like Adam from YMS "once you understand what make your product good and you try to exploit it ,it will end up felling forced" and THAT its what happened with him he knew that what made his videos so funny to me was his random but relatable persona,but now...his videos are so focused on HEY LOOK EVERYTHING LOOKS NICE AND TIDY, and his jokes feel so off point, i mean back in the day when he was wierd but never out of place the jokes werealways related to the game at hand or a running gag(Scissor men,Skeleton with guns,that rock from the banjo games,Jaqcues doing his stuff)now its just just "Family Guy" random (look its a horse) i feel like maybe the food games video would have been funnier if he slowly became crazy for fast food through the 2 videos...instead we got Grimbo(i know it was funny but it felt out of place)

I still like Jontron and I've enjoyed his newest episodes. but they are lacking the same experience of watching them. The best way I would describe it is that it's lost a lot of that mild insanity it used to have. There was always this wacky and unpredictable nature to the comedy in his videos that has been dulled in his newest videos. I think the Grembo scene from his first food games video was the closest we've gotten to that quality in the new season. Not to mention the severe lack of Joque. The mansai-esque dynamic that that character gave to the comedy was one of my favorite parts of Jontron and I think he's in only one or two brief scenes in the new season.

The way you made your analysis teach some important things for my future youtube career. Thank you.
@DixyRae8 жыл бұрын
Y'know this analysis isn't actually wrong, but I think it's pretty clear why Jon has taken his show in that direction and I seem to remember him speaking about it on another video or podcast. He's a film and tv guy. Yea, he made his name with video games but on some level he's far more interested in how a sitcom or movie is constructed than how games work. The way his interest is expressed is by attempting to mimic that style. It may not work as well as either a real sitcom or a youtube style video, but the process of making it is more fulfilling. As someone who's gets really obsessed with comics I really relate to this urge. When I try to use the same materials and formats as Japanese or Western comics I'm trying learn more about the craft and more often than not I miss the forest for the trees and my work doesn't look nearly as good as the pros. But I usually get a little better afterwards. I know this seems backwards in a viewership prioritized media landscape, but Jon doesn't strike me as someone who'd be happy sticking with a working formula he's unhappy with just because it keeps the audience watching. It may not be as popular or good, but I'm glad he's experimenting with his budget and format because I think the "Point of KZbin" is really about creators making exactly what they want and not simply amassing the largest possible audience. If anything, the domination of the Let's Play format has really stifled the creative range of KZbin. Oh and Arin and Ross from Game Grumps have been pretty vocal about the fact that animation is dead on KZbin because of a major algorithm change. Ross specifically goes in depth on the subject in a video called "Does Independent Animation Have a Future on KZbin?"

I think this is why I love Mega64 so much. They are still funny and know how to make comedy videos despite going from filming in their parents garage 10 years ago to their big studio and sets today. Thought they also don't consider themselves youtubers, it's just the most convenient method for them to use. Jontron's style doesn't fit to well with the big budget and high quality video making, but I think their is a place for those kinds of videos on youtube.

Man, I watched the S3 episodes and laughed but also did notice the shift in focus to the production value. It was really distracting and I think its kind of shady to say whether or not a creator is missing the point but with the direction of the show its almost as if making it more conventionally clean and smooth equals higher quality in the eyes of Jontron. I think it makes it feel a bit more artificial, as if he's trying to appeal to the conventions of the time instead of honing in on or progressing with what he's making. Its like what a certain Harry S Plinkett said: "You might not have even noticed, but your brain did."

You basically spoke everything that I feel about jontron and his recent output. You're right on the money, these reviews are soulless carcasses of "entertainment" the way he sees it now. Which couldn't be further from truth. It's shocking how mistaken he is about comedy now. And more shocking is the absence of reaction from fans. Everyone seems to be oblivious and totally ok with the shit he does now. For me it's nearly a phenomenon.
@erilaz74498 жыл бұрын
Right on the money. The show is still entertaining, but it lacks that insane, crude, rough quality that made his old material so great. He is trying to be to professional. He needs to go back to using a crappy camera, and acting unprofessional. He is on a freaking talk show for crying out loud.

+GZam14 Well, Digibro already explained it pretty well, so if you don't get it, then the surroundings of a KZbinr probably don't matter much to you. But to people like me, it feels off. Once I felt like being in Jon's livingroom and seeing him goof about and now I feel like I'm sitting in the audience of a studio watching him perform on the stage. I still really like his humour, the Disney Bootlegs video was great, but I do miss that comfortable feeling a bit.
@VinchVideos8 жыл бұрын
P. Roud Tobi Mi I understand what he explains, I just don't understand why he feels it was inherently better that way. I get why some viewers might not like the changes but it's not like he completely misunderstood why people liked his videos because if he did he wouldn't have made a set attempting to make it look like a living room. Of course things are going to feel more personal when it's more of a home video, but that's something that most youtubers rely on. The real reason Jon got popular and stood out was because of his unique comedic delivery which has only gotten more polished with time. At least that's my opinion.

When you mention using Jon's old jokes or joke styles all the time, just makes me wanna bring up, ALOT of youtubers use his joke style. Like, you admit it and honestly, I haven't really caught it yet. Not obvious ones, anyway. But, there are a whole bunch of youtubers who use everything , all the way down to his funny little slurred pronunciations with the matching text on the screen, who never ever would point it out. I bet a good bit of them aren't even aware of it. The dude has influenced a whole wave of youtubers that came in a little later after AVGN. By the way, I've totally noticed what you're talking about but hadn't ever put my finger on it. I honestly hope he sees this. I don't feel like you were insulting or disrespectful through any of it.

Just to point out, I think most if not all of the points you bring is true, but I'll play the defendant. Because the comments are licking your boots up, but also because I feel for Jon to some extent. I would also like to say that I'm not a big fan of Jon. I watched most of his videos and I know I enjoyed them, but AVGN and RedLetterMedia is more of what I love, and I can go back to it countless times. With that being said, and your things being said, you do need to understand the wish to explore different formats and interests, which I think you do. Not that I know Jon personally, but maybe he always wanted to have a cleaner look to his videos, may it be the quality of his recordings or the set. You remember when James (AVGN) introduced Mike to the front of the camera? That created quite the shitstorm, a blind one at that, as pretty much took part of the Whole Cinemassacre from almost the beginning. Or when RedLetterMedia started doing Half in the Bag, Jesus, GO BACK TO PLINKET ALREADY BLERGH JHSJVAJHFV YOU HACK FRAUDS! Now, again, I think you're right, Jon's childish humor works better with his heart on the plate. He was passionate and took the subjects personally. Maybe he ran out? Keeping more heartstrings for a later time? Iono. Personally I did something similar where I left my roots and did other things, and people hated it. I'm not a big youtuber at all, but I had 2k+ subs back on my old channel (rest in peace you pretty girl) with pretty much nothing but L4D videos. Real Versus Highlights, No scripts, no fake reactions, 100% montages. It was fun. I originally did so to learn software and english. I learned a lot (english most of all!), but after a few years of it I wanted to do more. And by more I mean Goddamn Let's Plays. I know. Everyone does it. It's bad. In my defense, I always introduced unique rules to most of them, like 100% capture rate X-COM or DMC3 Nevan runs or whatever. Mostly it was for my english, being forced to do a 100% commentary was challenging. God it was so bad. Then I got confortable with it, I started doing Streams rather than LPs, which cleared some space, some new highlight episodes and series, reviews even! None of that would've happened if I didn't forced the frenglish out of these probably shitty let's plays. ...At least I wasn't 12 playing Minecraft. Ugh. More like, Manchild. With a beard. Great video. Literally discovered you yesterday, don't mind if I judge ya right away.

I think I agree with you about what youtube is good for as a medium in general. I don't watch the JonTron videos much anymore so I'm not completely in the loop here, but it sounds from what you're saying like he at least has some kind of vision for what he wants his show to be. So what do you think he should he do with that vision? Is there a better medium for what he wants to do? Because I'm not sure TV is really the way to go either, nor do I really think he could get a show put on the air.

Very good points. Actually, this helps me feel less anxiety to put out more content that doesn't have to be of a certain style or standard. @aarongtr1808 жыл бұрын
Glad to see another KZbinr, especially a somewhat high-profile one, feels the same way. I've always enjoyed the grittier style of video game reviewers like AVGN and Dunkey, who rely on acerbic wit rather than sky-high production values to present their comedic observations and quips. Jon seems to have all but abandoned this aesthetic in S3, and it's made for a long string of mediocre, forgettable videos, which is sad because his first season of videos is hugely re-watchable. I feel the same way about 2015-2016 Game Grumps - what used to be two guys on a couch making hilarious jokes over classic (and not so classic) games is now eight or so people in a decked-out office producing content of questionable quality. Give me Jon and 2013/2014 Dan over this new, slick GG.

Ah geez, after you brought up ego I remembered one of my favorite shows Girlchan in Paradise. Now it's just depressing to think about how much he doesn't care about any of it. Recently a game grumps video about DS3 came out so I clicked on it, orange starburst background and all. But I was just struck by this feeling of why should I be watching this? I never felt anything from watching it, and the whole format of Ross hovering over ego not being connected to the game at all by extension made me feel that. It was just a video about shooting the shit and occasionally DS3 would intervene. This was my second time unsubing them.

@ikiostar8 жыл бұрын
Extras, m8? Egoraptor isn't the whole show. Yeah, he's the one playing, but it essentially is an audio-commentary between two-three people. Besides, the orange is personal preference. I don't notice it so much, but whatever floats your boat. I mean you still get pretty much everything _and_ an early look, so it's not too much to complain about. Anyways, you go enjoy that linkin park. While you're at it, try some Carpark North, some Green Day, some Three Days Grace, Breaking Benjamin, 4nonblondes, etc. Etc. But try to leave some room for some Flashdance or a-ha. It'll be all that knife can handle.

+ZombieMonkey7 You watch Game Grumps for the games? The entire channel is essentially Ego and the group shooting the shit and that's what most people love.

BCkhaos What originally got me to resub to them was their sonic boom playthrough which was phenomenal because it was able to do both. If you wanted to see them shit on sonic boom they even went so far to go frame by frame into the atrocious cutscenes. But for all the gameplay it was just as fun to watch because they were so on point with their comedy and the general blandness of the game became a tool for them to play off of.

I still like JonTron. I hate the sets, but I still think he's got it. I can still see that artistic passion behind all the props and expensive looking sets. I was thinking that the loss of that comfy and familiar feel was like the difference between the original Star wars movies and the prequels. Having everything be strictly controlled on a set isn't as good as the love you can feel in those home video feeling early episodes. But I believe Jon can still get it together. He's still relatively new and he's still learning. Wish I could say that for other people... SpoonyOne.

in short jontron is overproduced I think a lot of youtubers suffer from this, they don't know how to properly implement their budget

I honestly think the days of just being a dude in your basement is over. Everyone is like that now, and KZbin has always been a fight about relevance. Sure, there are a lot of people that made it big, but those people have long since realized that their "format" doesn't work anymore. You have to keep changing and trying different things, otherwise your growth will be stinted. Games are a good place to start, but there's always someone else doing the "Angry video game nerd" thing and at some point, Jon isn't that guy anymore. Now, I'm not saying his new stuff is better, because I agree that it just doesn't work as well, but how long would it have worked if he just kept at it? Sure, he would retain more of his base, but would he draw new people in as well, especially since so many people are going to ape his style? Eventually, someone is going to do it better. Because you can't win that war of attrition.

I'm curious to know what you think about high-quality serialized narratives like Red vs Blue (the latter seasons in particular that utilize a lot of CG) and RWBY? Both of these examples, except maybe the first two sagas of red vs blue, could be shown on TV; are they missing the point of youtube? When is something too TV to be KZbin?

I am here to post the most nitpicky comment of them all, but I think the title of your video is misleading. You raise a lot of good points but the title makes it seem like you dislike Jontron because 'he is not using youtube the right way'. O well, I completely agree for the rest. A lot of youtube shows have been upping their production quality but I feel it makes their shows worse (Jontron and Nostalgia critic, though the nostalgia critic still holds on to what makes his vids charming). Though I can forgive the sets, I really think that the heart of Jontron wasn't in reviewing really bad games (like comically bad), but rather reviewing the really insulting games (nuts & bolts, daikatana and starfox temperatures). I liked it that there was a youtuber who took nostalgia and gaming franchises seriously with great comedic moments. Reviewing those really awful movies/games gets really boring really fast.

"people will watch 20 minutes of content that maybe isn't as entertaining, but in the long run you get more out of it." Kind of sums of these videos too! Seriously though good video. You made a lot of good points about how youtube has changed. A lot of the points you brought up about jontron I kind of felt with PhillyD a few years back. It used to be some guy telling you the crazy news of the week in his apartment, then it became a studio and he filmed on a set and I felt a little disconnected. If I wanted high budget content with big sets I would watch TV more. It does kind of miss the point of the "home grown" aspect of youtube although I don't think that increasing production budget always has to be a bad thing for these creators.

Recently I was talking to some friends of mine about something similar to this, re: youtube and narrative/ storytelling, because they weren't getting why youtube with its expectation of creator intimacy and audience participation is basically a new medium for writers more akin to theater instead of like, an extension of TV/ film.

I guess it might be the "relateable" factor. His show is really high quality now, with actual budget. Before, it was just filmed in a regular ass house with regular ass equipment and stupid acting. Felt better in a way. But I still think what he puts out is definitely worth a watch.
