This comment section is sad. David did all he could to try to clean the sport up. The authorities never wanted to own up to the fact that the sport had a problem. What we know now is... it still has a problem, and so do all other sports. But so long as the money keeps rolling in, nobody will do anything about it because they can't afford the bad PR. Wad David naive? Yes, but no less admirable in his pursuit of fair and clean sport. It's amazing how perverted this world has become, that someone who tries to do good is despised.

Which is why he was facing a potential $100 million lawsuit from the United States Postal System, but ended up settling with the Dept of Justice for $5 million. Also, defining which laws he actually broke (especially at the time), in regards to sports cheating, across international borders with varying jurisdictions, makes such a thing highly unlikely.

My son admired Lance Armstrong, and he and I watched all the races on TV, and followed him closely. We watched an endurance test done In a lab where the doctor afterwards told the viewer that this cyclist had an amazing natural ability to get strength and endurance into his muscles, or something to that effect. We were both in awe. Then a few years later came the revelation that he had been doping all along. It was a huge letdown for my son. His hero had cheated. How many other kids were crushed after learning how badly this athlete had cheated? Lance hurt so many kids who looked up to him - and he cheated his competitors out of wins. Really sad human being.

More than anything else, this is what defines a good human being: the ability to admit wrongdoing and strive to make it right. Armstrong has done neither. While he did some good in trying to clean up the sport, he didn't clear his personal mistakes. That speaks mountains. What a sad little man.
@jacquesdemolay5171
@jacquesdemolay5171 2 жыл бұрын
Are you sure about any of that? I'm not unaware of any "good" he did in supposedly "trying to clean up the sport" (he was mostly completely uncooperative in that regard), and yet he HAS admitted to wrongdoing, repeatedly, and reached out to many people that he previously hurt in the hope of mending some of those bridges. That doesn't make up for his wrongdoings, but he's quite open these days about the error of his ways and just how dysfunctional the entire sport was back in his day.
@lynno6546
@lynno6546 2 жыл бұрын
@@jacquesdemolay5171 The specific error was saying he'd apologize to the journalist he sued and then not doing so. I would think he ought to return the ill gotten money - perhaps dumping it into his later efforts to clean things up does suffice, but to me it speaks volumes that one isn't able to say, "I made a mistake, and I'd like to apologize." Literally this whole conversation would be unnecessary if people would just do the right thing.

irrelevant to them doing their job reporting about elitists involved in defrauding the public etc. but 100% a valid issue that requires a real raw conversation, a full and transparent inquiry by a neutral 3rd party and the actual decision-makers who were assailants to Savile to be held accountable for the appropriate proportionate consequences. I'm certain the current majority of BBC employees wouldn't agree with that and understand their retirement pensions will be unscathed by this (they should agree to it even if they had to take a personal 5% reduction to their pensions; what that child pr3dat0r did was inexcusable by any measure).

Professional athletics is a mine field of approved drugs and unapproved drugs and medical techniques - a better story would be the deciding the what drugs are acceptable and why the line drawn where it is. Not remotely interested in journalist doing their job. What's next lets walk around with a traffic warden while books a celebrities car? The Story is Lance not the journalist and great athlete is Lance. Every single person taking part would have been applying some medical science to get the maximum performance from their bodies. Lance's 'confession' was also revenue driven so I don't yet buy into the story being sold it fits to neatly into the narrative of everyone being jealous.

There is nothing wrong with using performance enhancing substances. Everybody's body chemistry is different and some people have natural advantages due to that chemistry. Let people do whatever they can to be the absolute best they can be. Imagine how Michael Phelps could of took swimming to the next level if he had all the pharmacological tools available. Sports competition is all about who is the best, lets see how far the human body really can go. It like a nascar restrictor plate race, take the plate off and lets see what they can do.

your logic isn't really faulty at first glance but once you start to break down stuff problems start to arise. if PEs were allowed, what wouldn't be? where do we draw the line? what about an athlete taking hormones as a teenager to make themselves grow taller? what about a mechanical advantage for certain sports? special shoes, motorized bycicles, etc? there's already so much grey territory with the current allowances made, imagine how bad it would get if we allowed drugs. it would be less about the sport and more about the best chemistry developments than ever before. also, taking PEs still doesn't negate biological advantages, like you said yourself. a regular joe who dopes and a michael phelps who dopes aren't even in the same league. PEs will not balance skill and natural ability differences-- they will simply exacerbate them. you argue that we should allow drugs to let sports reach their maximum potential-- except it won't be people doing it, it will be substances. i feel like that goes against the essence of traditional sportsmanship. if i were you i would watch something like f1 instead
