In the MK9 canon he is an ex-Black Dragon turned cop who is killed by Sindel and turned into an evil Revenant, where he stayed through MK11. Even when MK11 brought back past versions of characters they conveniently summoned Kabal from when he was still a Black Dragon. In this movie, yeah Kano betrayed him and caused him to become disfigured and he never found redemption. They just keep turning Kabal evil when he’s the perfect redemption story.

Good guy Kabal is genuinely really fun to watch. I like his voice and the conflicted feelings he has over his own appearance/abilities. It’s a shame that he doesn’t get to be around longer.
