How Karnataka's Soliga community is saving its language

Biligiri Ranganna Betta or BR Hills in Karnataka, is home to Soliga people. Solega or Sholaga, are a group of indigenous, forest-dwelling people found mostly in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
Their language is a Dravidian one closely related to Kannada. It is often referred by the community as ‘namma Kannada’ (our Kannada), ‘namma baase’ (our language) or ‘Soliga baase. But with changing lifestyles and exposure to the outside world, Soliga language is facing a threat of erosion.
We speak to Dr, C Madegowda of the Zilla Budakattu Girijana Abhivruddhi Sangha, Lakshmi M a Soliga community member, and Samira Agnihotri of Punarchith Collective, who are keeping the language alive.
