King Gizzard are well known for their use of odd time signatures, polyrhythms and polymeters so today we are going to take a closer look at how these techniques are put to work in their 2017 album "Polygondwanaland".
I've used Moises app to help analyze this album. Their stem separation tool is great for removing or isolating instruments from songs. With this app, you can also find chords, and change the key or the tempo of a song, amongst other features which make it a great tool for learning or analysing songs.

The personal observation I've made with these time signatures is that 7/4 and 7/8 somehow sound more normal and more natural than 5/4 and 5/8; it feels to me as if 7/4 is to 5/4 as 4/4 is to 3/4. What I've noticed in the examples here though is that King Gizzard has a talent for actually making 4/4 sound like an odd meter whenever it appears!
@zarzaparrilla67
@zarzaparrilla67 2 ай бұрын
They also have the talent to make odd time signatures sound like usual time signatures. Every song in Polygondwnanaland is a bad example because they're meant to sound complex, but other songs like the river in 5/4 or the wheel in 7/8 sound really natural.
@ramunayy

getting super into king gizzard made me really interested in odd time signatures, and songs like wah wah or the river make 5/4 sound super natural. you count it in your head and it's disjointed but the melodies in those songs make it so natural

This is immediately the best resource for anyone asking for clarification on Polygondwanaland's concept. I couldn't have asked for this, what an undertaking. I personally thought about Tetrachromacy as mostly a 3 thing with the odd 4th beat hiccup; kinda like Golden Brown, now I think about it. That's mostly an interpretation from the lyrics though. Trying to see the fourth colour. But again, this was ultra illuminating. Well done and thank you!

I'd like to see you look into Butterfly 3000's time signatures. Almost all songs are have polymeter. For example, synthesizer in 'Yours' is in 15/8, bass is in 14/8, drums are in 8/8. I've also been transcribing the whole BF3K (it's about 85-90% done). If you need, I can help with some information.

I just love how King Gizzard explore so many aspects of music making. From different genres, to scales, rhythms, sounds, tunings. And still somehow are recognisable. Really refreshing and good to see that a band can be more than a standardised products, but can be what ever it wants to be. I think so many artists are afraid of changing their style to not frighten or irritating their fans. King gizzard is the exact opposite of that. That just gives me hope and confidence that everything is allowed and that there is no right or wrong when it comes to creating something new. Very much appreciate your analysis videos on the band, David. As a not classical trained musician this makes so much observations of mine easier to understand and again sparking new thoughts about music making. Thanks a lot!

Just one more thing with the fourth colour: the riff that is played which descends (12/8 and 2/8 as you described) is played 4 times then moved down and repeated 3 times, then 2 and then once before leading into the "chorus" (I believe, the hyperbole). Can say that it is the 10 bars for the 10th song but I thought it was awesome how they implemented that.

My favorite King Gizzard polyrhythm is in the song "Catching Smoke." The meter for the majority of the song is 3 bars of 4/4 followed by a bar of 9/8. The bass during the chorus, however, feels that rhythm in 11 bars of 3/8. The verses also break this rhythm up into bars of 3/8. So the 33 beat phrase is simultaneously broken up into 8-8-8-9 or 3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3-3, while still being an extremely catchy song.

Good to see 5 bars of 5 beats in each line. I tend to think that most odd time sigs "cheat" by grouping bars into fours. 3/4 timing almost always does this too.

_Fear of Fours_ by Lamb similarly features all kinds of time signatures except 4/4 and 2/4, as the name implies. One of its songs, _Five,_ seems like it's in 5/4 but throws in 11/8 at times. More precisely it mostly has sections of 8 bars, of which six are in 5/8 and two in 6/8; or occasionally seven in 5/8 and one in 7/8.

Additionally, Polygondwanaland is (in my opinion) their absolute masterpiece. They are so prolific that I keep hopes they will someday maybe match its brilliance with another album. B3K comes close. i'm surprised you missed out the polymeter and hemiola in the start of inner cell! while the drums & bass are doing 5 bars of 5/4, the vocals & guitar are playing in 6/8 - with 8 repeats and an extra 2/8 to fill the gap at the end

I’ve actually had quite a similar experience to Stu and his car alarm. My washing machine beeps in 7/8, and I’ve tapped my foot and snapped my fingers to the beat many times

5:19 I noticed that cheeky reference to Virtual Riot's polyrythm techno song!

You should listen to Mild High Club, which King Gizz made an album with a few years ago. Very jazzy.

Wow, interesting analysis! At 12:15 could call this a 9 vs 8 polymeter as it looks like the 8th notes are going at the same rate in both meters.

Yeah you can consider the 4/4 as 8/8 so yeah 9 against 8 polymeter is a better way to describe it 😊

Polygondwanaland es todo lo que amo del progresivo sin todo lo que odio del progresivo. 10/10 y mi disco favorito de King gizzard.
