@DavidBennettPiano Dear David, I have a question regarding Ice Five (Dorian). I understand that you wanted to highlight the difference between the natural minor and dorian scale, but isn't interpreting the song in the 'parent key' of Bb really confusing? If we see it as being in F (so G dorian) we would simply have a ii - iii and have no need to raise the b5 of the vii chord. We would also have one accidental less in the key signature. Why did you interpret it this way?

The most fantastic thing about KG&LW is that, despite their ginormous output and despite their ability to go full-on theoretical with albums like this (Or Microtonal Banana or Polygondwanaland), their songs are still great to listen to, earworms even, and they still convey messages. If you had no idea that this record goes through all the modes, and were just listening it for the songs, the lyrics, the feel, the soundscapes, it's still a great, rewarding listen - and not, what it easily could have become, a boring contrived lesson in music theory. My fave is Butterfly 3000 which, to me, is like pulling Kraftwerk into the Gizzverse.

Other interesting thing are the microtonal albums trilogy, very interesting musically.

So I have seen this before and I am always a bit perplexed by this: so whenever you have a non-Ionian or non-Aeolian scale/mode you still seem to have the same fixed accidentals as the Ionian or Aeolian counterpart. So the G dorian example has two flats and the D phrgian has one flat whereas whenever I play things notated and in these modes a G dorian would have only one flat and D phrygian would have two flats. Now interestingly, the F lydian example had no accidental but D mixolydian has two sharps instead of one and A locrian has no accidentals instead of two flats. Although I see what they did there by omitting the 5 in that A(di)m chord. :) So what gives? For me, the natural thing would be to indicate G mixolydian with no accidentals, C# phrygian with 3 sharps, C dorian with two flats etc. So again, what gives?

Omitting the 5 and calling it Locrian is total BS. lol

@@kierenmoore3236It did come off as sus, yes. :) But even so, I mean, if I wanted to indicate something to be in C Locrian I would put 5 flats there and not 3 flats and mark every single D flat and G flat.

@@weepingscorpion8739 It’s more than sus, though. The b5 is literally the defining/signature scale degree of Locrian. It would be like buying a “jam donut”, and finding out it’s a plain donut with a tiny dot of jam inside it, lol. I mean, technically, perhaps … but you’d feel cheated. We wouldn’t all be talking about how clever the donut manufacturer was, would we … lol

your ass was like "even locrian" as if nobody was expecting an album called "ice death planets lungs mushrooms and lava" to use locrian

Only downside I have with this is that the words in the title don't match the titles of the songs in their modes. Ice is Ionian, but then the song Ice V is not the ionian song and instead it's Mycelium, which would match more logically with Mushrooms being Myxolydian.

was secretly hoping david would end the video with: "now here's a song that I wrote that uses all 7 modes" 😉

About the Locrian mode - did they just "cheat" by leaving the flat5 out? I think they did a bit. Also you talk about the one needs to be "resolved or resolving chord". No it does not. In my mind, music does not need to resolve into anything. It is ok if it resolves, but it doesn't have to. Or am I just too dumb to understand this "claim"?

The example done in Phrygian - could it be compared to Dwight Yoakam's Long White Cadillac in the outro instrumental but not necessarily in Phrygian, which incidentally, is Pete Anderson's best work ¿`_
