Having lived through the years before and after Ghana gained independence, Wing Commander Patrick Nelson Sogbodjor narrates the story of how he personally witnessed plans by the opposition to Kwame Nkrumah tried hard to murder him. He also talks how Kwame Nkrumah made Ghana the first sub-Saharan African country to own fighter jets and his deep regrets over the 1966 coup.

It's not wholly true. The Mastermind of the coup was J.W.K. Harley, the Head of the police who was being investigated in a bribery case. So, he had dire reasons for wanting Nkrumah out of the way. After the coup, the new head of state Lt. Gen. Ankrah traveled to the USA to lobby President Johnson for US support for the coup. If the USA was were behind the coup, that trip wouldn't have been unnecessary. My point is simply that Nkrumah was overthrown by traitors within Ghana.

⁠@@agoogo5026Ankrah was not Nkrumah’s “trusted” General. In fact, Ankrah had been made to retire long before the coup. The plotters only brought him to be the face of their treason. More importantly, the key opposition figures to Nkrumah, specifically Busia and Edward Akufo-Addo were quickly given top appointments by the NLC traitors and they happily accepted these appointments. It is very interesting to see the attempts to deny their close involvement with the traitors. Busia and Akufo-Addo headed the political committee of the NLC. They were literally part and parcel of the NLC!

Please, let us try to do away with tribalism. The story he narrates also captures the massive support Kwame Nkrumah had in Kumasi. He mentions how CPP won the same number of seats as the NLM in Kumasi. This shows that many asantes loved and supported Nkrumah. The simple fact that some leaders in Kumasi formed the NLM and that was their stronghold does not mean all the people in or from Kumasi hated Kwame Nkrumah. The traitors who masterminded that coup were small in number and they came from different ethnic groups as you rightly pointed out. Their Chief motivation was their selfish greed and not anything to do with where they come from.

They were called the Tuskeegee Airmen and African Americans were quite aware of them. So please, stop the CAP! 😂😂😂

Just looked up the Tuskegee Airmen and you are right about them. But, it is pretty clear one of the main reasons they are famous is because it was highly unusual for African-Americans to fly fighter jets at that time in the USA. In fact, the records show that Racial Segregation only ended in the US military in 1948. That’s 3 years after World War II. And, as we know, the Civil Rights movement to demand the end of racial segregation and discrimination went on into the 1960s. In other words, African Americans were still being discriminated against in many ways up till the 1960s. So, it is not implausible that the African-American man that the speaker refers to may have said all that. After, African-Americans did not have full rights to even vote in the USA till 1965.

@talkingAfrica Trust me, sir. I am from America. Black Americans were very much aware of the Tuskegee Airmen, SPECIALLY due to the social and political climate in the country at that time. They were a source of African American and national pride. So, yeah, I'm still calling CAP. I will add this, though. He may have been shocked that an AFRICAN was an actual fighter pilot, and this would've been due to the propaganda at the time was such that Black Americans were being taught that Africa and her inhabitants were backward. Unfortunately, this belief still persists to this day and can be seen in the attitudes towards Africa that are held by FBA and ADOS.

Although what you said is true (of the Tuskeegees airmen)... Ask yourself this question how were they acknowledged? You have the impression that his statement meant that he was unaware of the Tuskeegees, I believe otherwise (he's probably aware of that). The world war II required more men, and the blacks who were trained to be in the air were trained to do just that. Not because the then US government desired to integrate fully nigros into those ranks. Although the stigma (of blacks not being capable) were subsiding over the years, at the time this man had the encounter with the black American he is talking about, segregation was still rive in the American army, airforce etc. Had it not been because of the perculiar need of "more men" for the world war II, I bet you no blacks would have been exalted to pilot planes officially. What you did is just a direct implication of equivalence (if he said this then it meant this). That is wrong analogy, his statement doesn't imply directly that there couldn't have been black pilots at any "instance" of the american army and airforce; but rather, should be understood that at that time, it was still difficult for blacks to be pilots especially where there are white pilots. In fact, with Tuskeegees, there was a perceived segregation - as white pilots wouldn't easily wish to integrate amongst blacks... It is just after the pressure exerted by Nkrumah on the war against racism where he demonstrated that blacks can do it too, there then, as a camouflaged it became the general trend to allowing blacks participate fully, in Games, professional work and other activities that had whites and blacks together. Even that, it took many years for South Africa to fall in the same line. So jumping into premature conclusions of people's statements without a careful scrutiny is wrong.
