Cast iron is a great piston ring material for automotive too, very low friction compared to other alloys thanks to graphite stuck in its crystalline structure. It's only recently that cast iron was replaced by steel since modern engines are getting smaller and smaller but make more and more power per cc to beat regulations, and steel can resist abuse substantially more, especially when running it thin, again, for "fuel saving" purposes.

For those who have no engineering background this type of piston ring made from questionable scrap cast iron is only one type of many & only suitable for slow surface speed, not suitable for internal combustion engines, petrol or diesel, nor for steam locomotives both require a different metal composition for high surface speed, the machining process shown has some similar activities to my experiences of many years ago making piston rings for steam locomotives for both valves & cylinders the final fitting by filing is also common.

Finally, I saw a video with micrometers in all the right places. although this may be done as We in the USA would do it in the 1930's, I think these guys are doing a good job. I was impressed how they OD ground the outer diameter of the rings. Good Job Guys

Doesn't the mixed alloy variances cause consistency issues from lot to lot? Does that results in significant differences in ring and piston sleeve wear from lot to lot?

the engines they are making parts for have regular ring replacement procedures. Kind of like buying a KIA in the US and replacing the engine every 30k.

@@tonyb7748 That and I don't treat vehicles like race cars. Those who treat their vehicles like race cars will maintain them as often as race cars require. Even though I normally drive 5 mph over the speed limit, I still get great gas mileage, go 10 years between new brakes in my automatic cars and last traffic ticket was in 1998. Before that was 1987. I was young, stupid and driving a car like a race car. But I learned.

In most cases, especially this size, the piston rings are made from regular grey cast iron. Their choice of scrap material identifies this. It is quite possible that these rings are for compressors. The piston 21:27 they are using for reference is a double acting piston, meaning that it is most probably for a compressor.

😀this is how piston rings were made 100 years ago) do not think that you can take any piece of metal and make anything out of it.using modern technologies, the rings are given some ovality and the cross section of the ring is not square but trapezoidal .. in addition, heat treatment is required😁😁

What's the name of that white powder they spray between one part of the mold and the other?
Actually a great job of making the piston rings. But what purpose can the rings serve on a piston that is full of holes? Not only machined holes but holes in the cast part of the piston
