I have to admit, I unsubscribed about a year ago because the content felt overly focused on gear and consumerism. It came across as general, uneducational, and more oriented toward the KZbin algorithm. However, these last two videos you uploaded are a complete game-changer-so educational, unique, and genuinely helpful. As a working DP, with 99% of my work being commercial, getting insights from top-tier, experienced DPs is invaluable. I'd even pay for more content like this! I’ve resubscribed. Fantastic work!

Shotdeck is founded by Lawrence Sher, so this video could be a payed "ad", or at least a mutual back-scratching: Sher agreeing to be interviewed if he can promote his company. Affiliate links in the description. If so, Matti's return to youtube could (partly?) be a money issue? Very interesting content nonetheless! Exciting BTS insights. Hope the series continues.

A BIG part of how we respond to a movie is the expectations set by the marketing. If you go in expecting a cartoon villain action movie, and find yourself in a slow burn psychological musical... the initial exit-surveys may reflect that confused disappointment. I prepared my family with the correct framing of the genre and they all were very moved by the story. My mom loved it, and didn't even realize how it related to BATMAN. I like films that aren't only rushing through plot, but take time for emotions to sink in. But I still thought it could have been cut down in places when certain songs felt unnecessary to me.

I absolutely love the theory that the director didn't want to make a second film and the studio just threw him money, so he was like "fine. I'll show you the failure of an unneeded sequel... or a... folie of deux..."
@philmaker_8 күн бұрын
That‘s still pretty shitty. Taking home 20m for yourself as director and burning 200m, just to intentionally make a bad movie. That’s probably even worse than saying „we just tried making something different, but it didn‘t work“. Because that would at least be respectable in some way.
@Nick-4K8 күн бұрын
@philmaker_ that's understandable. But WB sucks. So I'm glad they lost money on that.

I thought the film was great, very misunderstood... in the credits they cover a song by Daniel Johnston. For people who want to understand google him and figure out what made him appealing to many people, imo it's what joker 2 is about.

Great video! And so informative! I do have one question though at 36.44 in the video there’s a scene in the court room and there’s smoke coming up on the top right side. I don’t understand where it would be motivated (I think that’s the right word.) I understand the use of smoke in a scene but I don’t get why it would be used in puffs in the view of the camera. I get when you want atmosphere smoke helps it’s not like the scene is a fire or someone smoking as it’s a court room. Or am I missing something or not understanding something?
@LAMPHOUSE.VIDEOS6 күн бұрын
But there is an ashtray sitting on a table in front of Arthur, so probably smoking is allowed in this "universe" court room.

I loved Joker Folie a Deux, there were many films this year that used musical aspects. People don’t understand the reason for the mechanism of a musical break and unfortunately comic book fans with certain action film expectations hated on it. It’s brave cinema and this film will be looked back on with favour.

The movie was so beautiful on a cinematography level. I think there was way to much singing and the ending was terrible. I know Joaquin Phoenix was not going to do another one but it really left the ending flat. Super disappointing story. It was great besides the singing until he said he is no longer the Joker. That is when the movie came off the tracks.
@raredreamfootage8 күн бұрын
I wonder how many chances the above the line team gets when a movie flops at the box office? Will Lawrence Sher get another chance at DP'ing another big budget movie? The reality is, everything hinges on the box office numbers. If the cinematography is breathtaking, but if it fails to pull in the numbers, then the studios will start to devalue such cinematography, they will think it is an unnecessary expense. They don't look at the results in a vacuum without accounting for the money it makes.
@tristenmoles79338 күн бұрын
He absolutely will. His work was one of the few things that even people that disliked the story could agree that he did a hell of a job shooting this film. If anyone is safe its Mr. Sher.
@raredreamfootage8 күн бұрын

The use of shotdeck like this just picking your favourite films and things to rip, explains a lot of how experienced filmmakers completely miss the point and cohesion of the film and story simple because they actually overestimate their talent to move past their influences they they are happy to completely rip. Instead of supporting the story these influences and key frames and often conflicting mood references bts look like throwing mud at the wall and then using a thin cliched story to give an excuse to have these favourite moments in. The fact that there is no similar video about the writing process tells us everything about the talent sets involved here.

@KenFlanagan7 күн бұрын
They took a franchise and had an approach but the quality of the joker was let down by some of the worded plot and story development I have ever seen. Is succeeded as style over substance but as a film imo it was a turkey with some great set pieces. This second film was an accident waiting to happen and only an overly hubristic mentally couldn’t see this. To now talk about something when everyone in film emphasises story and script but to ignore that and talk about technique misses the essential element of any creative and that is to call out something when it isn’t working. This is basic artistic integrity rather than an exercise in taking the money and running. I have great respect for Asher for shotdeck and his general honesty but he is trapped by his own career prospects and can’t call out a turkey when it turns up at Christmas begging to be put out of its misery. This should be all about how can “talented” working professionals make such awful work given the resources at their disposal. Joker is not the only film like this. Time for some real honesty maybe.
