The thing that impressed me the most was the fact that he was faster than Yuki in that last stint and was within a second the entire time. He also overtook two cars off the restart and looked more confident than most veterans. If that last stint is anything to go by then he'll likely have a seat in a year.

It would certainly add pressure for Tsunoda from Iwasa because if one younger driver in Lawson can match you the other might too and perhaps Lawson is what they thought De Vries was a stable rookie with limited mistakes and no catastrophes someone who can lead a team early on. I don't think Ricciardo is going to want to race in a backmarker forever, I could be wrong but I can't see it.

I was beyond impressed by Lawson's debut. I mean Nyck was lucky enough to get a bright sunny day, this poor kid got monsoons, sand dunes blowing across the track, slippery greasy conditions, and had to give slicks a go for the first time. After all that, where did he finish...13th above his teammate. I like the fact that he will probably get maybe 2 more chances to show his skills. Happy for him that he gets this opportunity like Nyck had last year. In other news, Daniel's gotta eat, sleep, breathe recovery, because this sport waits for no man, and there is no motivation like knowing your potential replacement is driving YOUR car to get you icing 20x a day and elevating that hand.

Did you even watch the race? Im actually confused by these comments. Lawson qualified 1.6 seconds slower than tsu and a whole second slower than bottas in 19th. He was terrible in quali. In the race hes racing around in 18, 19, 20th the whole race while tsunoda is performing miracles getting the alpha up to 4th at one point. Then after safety cars and contact tsunoda is down in 13th and lawson in 14th and on the last lap while cars are crossing the finish line tsunoda off camera loses 5 places suddenly and lawson finishes ahead of him. I was excited for lawson but his first race was trash. The only bright spot was he kept the car on the track in horrible conditions.

@GregRJohnson736 the bloke got 1 practice session on a wet Zandvoort, which is one of the trickiest tracks on the calandar. The track is already difficult enough as it is in the dry with the heavy wind in the dunes and pretty tricky corners. Nyck de Vries, his debut on Monza is nothing compared to Lawson on Zandvoort. He never drove on inters before this weekend so ofcourse he is off the pace compared to veteran drivers. Lawson made no big mistakes and set decent laptimes in the hardest conditions you can get and if you think its an average drive you absolutely have no idea how hard it is to jump into that car in those conistions on that track....

Talented, yes, what's impressed me about Lawson is how calm and disciplined he is. He's been put in some hairt situations already in his short career and has managed to calmly deal with what was put in front of him. Very professional, especially for such a young guy. I think Daniel Ricciardo has already done enough to prove himself. He jumped in the Red Bull test and after 11 laps did a lap fast enough for the first row of the grid. He then jumped in the Alpha Tauri and out qualified and beat Yuki at his first GP back. Hes a 8 x GP winner and is super high rated by Horner and Marko. If Lawson impresses, it will be Yuki who is under pressure imo. If Lawson beats Yuki, that means Ricciardo and Lawson have jumped in the car and beaten him when hes more experieced in the car. What kept Yuki around with Red Bull was the Honda ties, now that Honda is going to Aston Martin, Yuki isn't so safe anymore and has to really impress. Fact is Daniel jumped in the Alpha Tauri and beat him straight away on merit, and if Lawson does the same, I feel like it will be Danny Ric and Lawson for Alpha Tauri next season. Yuki I think will end up at Aston in reserves until Alonso retires.

While Lawson found himself in a rather tough scenario this weekend, Ricciardo has proven talent, obvious experience and, I cannot help but believe he has yet to turn in his best season so long as the car is commensurate with his ability. I doubt that recovery time from this injury will have or certainly should play a role in what any team see's in his potential. That the presence of mind to avoid hitting another driver was his primary focus in his demise is credit to a growing maturity that should not be overlooked as inconsequential. I'd invest in this guy any day and every day and can only hope his character is as obvious to the teams who need a star and a workhorse.

@@accent1666 Daniel is by all rights (regardless of talent for which has yet to be truly recognized nor certainly harvested) the quintessential ambassador to formula one. His demeanor, attitude, his very presence so positive is a virtual goldmine that I find dumbfounding that none of the teams nor the FIA has recognized at it's face value and certainly not it's potential God knows what limit that could be. You couldn't ask for a better sportsman, that he finds himself in a world divorced of truth in it's quest for a hollow glory is a shame for all of us to witness. Think about this..that he lay in recovery with that big stupid smile of his is more an advertisement than Mercedes could muster with all of it's financial might if they tried two years steady. Some people, and most organizations even if the pinnacle do not, and will not ever get it. In my perfect world, Danny drives for a resurgent and scrappy Williams for a return to glory well-deserved and legendary in it's efforts. Yeah, I'm a dreamer...but you can't take that away.

I mean, I don't know, I'm on the fence but do you actually think that if you took Max or Lewis or Alonso that they'd do as poorly as Riccardo performed at McLaren *just* because of the car? Hate on the car all you like, deficit to his teammate was not insignificant. I can't imagine that't be the case with other top performing drivers? Who knows, I'm just jaded from all of the hype and I think i'd rather see new talent come through and have a go rather than the Riccardo show season 6
@southernstablesauto
@southernstablesauto Жыл бұрын
@@chris770 Well, I get the idea you're floating and, while there may be some rationale there that seems to have traction, I would also point out that unless we had such data then, it is merely speculative on our part as no control group exists by which we could measure it. I'm a huge Alonso fan and have been since the days of Flavio and Mild Seven livery on the car he drove. But ultimately I could also say that there have been plenty of occasions whereby (by all appearances) it looked convincingly that Alsonso was simply "done" with say...Ferrari, McLaren, and in fact left F1 altogether. If you're a driver, an enthusiast, I'll try to keep this short...There are cars that I calibrate and obviously have to drive and think they are considerably more powerful than another I have calibrated and dyno-tested given their street behaviors only to find out on the dyno that, that is not true at all. So why then did I believe that? The car is loose, the car is demanding of all of my attention under throttle hanging her tail out gratuitously at any moment and therefor leaves the illusion of power rather than the truth. Now, fifty-two laps into a car that takes EVERYTHING you have to finish 10th...and no matter what the team does is a miserable POS. Where then does a driver get inspiration when the car does not fit their style of driving? The lock-cylinder tumblers to some extent have to fall into place and that is the task of the designers, the technicians, and driver feed-back..

But it's pretty sad though that we've reached this point where it's going to be between Ricciardo and Lawson fighting for the same seat. Monza, especially if it's a clear day race, would be interesting. What with Honda heading to Aston Martin, Stroll talking about leaving F1, there is a good chance of Yuki getting Stroll's seat. Yes, Daddy Stroll bought the team for him, but he's renowned for being a petrolhead, so he also bought the team for himself. Despite Alonso's apparent hints and tips for Lance, he's been pretty abysmal this year, especially in comparison to Fred. Tbh, I am not convinced that Alonso is not playing his infamous head games with the kid because he knows that as things stand, when Honda joins in, they're more than likely going to want a Japanese driver. There's only one Japanese driver on the grid; most particularly, a Japanese driver experienced with Hondas. That means that if Junior stays, Alonso is probably out of his car. I also think the games are working, because Senior isn't a particularly patient man and with all of the podiums coming from Alonso's side of the garage, he might actually be getting ready to call time on his son's seat, if not his career. AM should be more successful with Yuki there; he's definitely improving and maturing and he's used to driving with a Honda power train. Edit: forgot that I meant to add that if it happens for next year (if there's any pressure on Yuki's seat because of Lawson and Danny Ric), there's the answer for AT and their "too many bums, not enough seats" problem. Or if Checo gets the boot, either AT driver could easily move to RB (but if Honda push to keep Yuki with them, RB are more likely to take DR back first). (For those who think that Alonso isn't that ruthless when it comes to his own best interests, go through his history, because he blooming well is!)

Honestly, I don't think Tsunoda should have the seat anymore. Look at Gasly: he won the 2016 GP2 Championship, was a half point away from winning Super Formula, and started scoring relatively well in 2018, only his second year with Toro Rosso. Look at Albon: He was third in DAMS behind Lando Norris and George Russell despite having an engine issue at Le Castellet, was promoted to Red Bull in just a year, and he was dropped! Then, when he came back to F1, he finished with double the points of his teammate immediately, and remember, that's not good enough for Red Bull! People like Riccardo, Verstappen, and Vettel were even better! All of these drivers were successful in junior categories, and only took a couple years, at most, to become very talented drivers. Right now, Lawson has been doing incredibly well in Super Formula, and did very well in the Italian Grand Prix. Nyck De Vries should've been kept on for 2024, so he could have another year to do better, while Lawson should've been brought on, as I am sure that Tsunoda will never be Red Bull material. He did decently in F2, but scored barely over a quarter of the amount of points Gasly scored in 2021, and in 2022, Gasly scored nearly double! He's been given enough time, it's time for Red Bull to drop him.

Daniel has had multiple opportunities but it shows he’s not at the level anymore. Plenty of experience but he’s getting too old. Liam should be in F1 already, the younger drivers need to come through. Stroll is another driver that needs to give way to youth, hell even Haas need a revamp

The only impact Lawson could have if he impresses is that RB decide pursue the more cautious recovery timeline for Danny to return for Mexico. That would give Lawson 5 full races, and Danny 6. Either way, Lawson will not replace Ricciardo at AT this season. 2 races and a bit of practice is not a large enough sample size to decide to bench Danny. RB are putting a lot of resources into trying to tap into the Ricciardo they once knew at RB. Among all drivers in the RB stable, including Checo, RB would take the 2018 version of Danny over all of them without hesitation. That's what they'll keep hoping for. Danny will be back by Mexico.

if I had to pick guy to serve alongside Lawson in the Alpha Tauri car, a multiyear veteran like Ricciardo is probably a better choice than a young driver who's been treading water and struggling to show advancement over the last few years. Riccardo is good enough to compete, and can provide mentorship that Yuki just can't. I honestly believe that there is a distinct possibility that if Lawson continues to prove himself, the 2024 Alpha Tauri lineup will feature both Lawson and Riccardo while Tsunoda moves on elsewhere, perhaps to Haas, or to a reserve slot for a team like Aston..

Liam simply beating his teammate under merit is enough to get the attention needed. He still has the nothing to lose and everything to gain card. It seems drivers step up in the redbull camp in this make or break setup. And they fall when given a full time seat. Whereas as Daniel is a known and consistent performer. Every driver is benchmarked against Max at the moment. There's nothing this guy seems to struggle with.

Just for a bit of a thinking puzzle: would you give the seat to a seasoned one who has a decent history or a young upstart who holds major promise? Both have the popular vote. And there’s another one who underperforms but has a solid contract. But hey. Paper is something for lavatories. Given the RB philosophy, I think I know what they’ll do. Checo out, Ricci to RBR until ‘26, then retire him for Yuki, and Liam bides his time at AT until ‘28 when Max’ll obviously retire

If that was Seb Vettel or Max behind Daniel they would have just gone for it and overtake him.

Except that Lawson won't stop Ricciardo's return to Redbull. We have already seen what recency bias can lead to(De Vries signed and dropped in an instant). And Lawson hasn't done anything special either, he just got to the finish line and didn't crash, which is expected from him. Until Checo steps up or Dan completely bins it in every race - the decision to drop Perez for Ricc, either in 2024 or 2025, seems like a done deal. Even though Checo has second place in DC - it is as shaky as it could be, to a point, where he could even lose it and he is driving the best car on the grid by a mile. Is it enough for RB at the moment given that they have already won a championship? It probably is. But both Aston and Mercedes(namely Fernando and Lewis) are forces to be reckoned with, especially in 2024, where they might have a charge for the championship.
