Alfa Romeo/Sauber after the first 8 races of 2022: "Ight imma head out"

Alfa was a useless partner and the Audi partnership is what pushed them out. But it’s ironic because there’s a decent chance Audi isn’t even going to be around in 2026 and a high chance they’re not in F1 after 2029.

I mean, a 4 year commitment, I still would bet on Sauber/Audi. Audi has managed to achieve good results in all categories they've been a part of + Binotto for all his faults as team principal, he is the engineer that brought back ferrari from the horrific 2020 season. With a big regulation change + Prost leaving + Alpine ditching their engine + Alpines directive team being always chaos, my bet is 100% in Audi.

@themidnightinatorАй бұрын
To be fair, that can be attributed moreso to the field jumping up then Alpine sliding down. In 2022, they were 4th, best of the midfield, then in 2023, McLaren and Aston Martin jumped up and became frontrunning teams, so 6th was still best of the rest. 2024 has been an absolute disaster tho

It is painfully funny that sauber now has some of the quickest tyre changes of the midfield now when their car is in development hell, and when the cars were actually somewhat competitive in the first 5 races they had engine issues, detachable front wing endplates and 50-second pit stops
@The_ZeroLineАй бұрын
Haas’ & Alpine’s staff size are not that far apart in reality. You’re not counting all the de facto staff at Dallara & SF who build + design its PU, gbox, suspension, chassis, etc. and the fact Alpine is shedding 400+ jobs that were all on the Viry/PU side.
@GregBrownsWorldORacingАй бұрын
If HAAS had the same money and resources as Alpine, they would destroy them. Of course leaving the French govt. out of your racing team is always a net plus. Not sure what Sauber's excuse is.

This a silly and simplistic take that would have gotten laughed at had you posted this any of the last five seasons before 2024.
@The_ZeroLineАй бұрын
You also can’t compare staff sizes since that’s Alpine’s staff size making their own engine and much of Haas’ staff is de facto working at Ferrari and Dallara.

Toyota is looked as the worst manufacture in F1 (in terms of money spend vs. results) and they were really terrible for all the resources they spent. But seeing what Alpine/Renault is doing since 2016 is just depressing for a manufacturer. They were never able to challenge the top teams on pure pace and probably "never" will. Maybe they will just leave the sport in a few years but let's see.
@fabienmboudoungougni4720Ай бұрын
And Sauber is just horrendously bad this season. Even their driver line ups are uninspiring since 2019. They brought in Gio who took some time but was pretty solid in the latter stages of the 2021 season (and I was rooting for him). Unfortuneatly he wasn't a consistent driver. Zhou started promising in 2022 and until halfway of 2023 but ever since and especially this season (apart from Bahrain) he has been nowhere. Of course he beating Bottas sometimes but most of the time he is outqualified by 0.5-1.0s. Maybe a mid-season driver swap would be for the best (the car is still awful, but atleast be could asses some of the young drivers like Pourchaire or Drugovich,...)

It’s not about admitting Alpine can’t do it. It’s them finally admitting they’re not willing to spend the $ to make their own engine competitive, especially without a customer. They’re still clearly a far better aero/chassis designer than Sauber. You can’t blame Flavio for any of their mismanagement. All of the wild, aimless firings happened before he got there. And of course the interim TP, who came from Viry, was going to go. He’s been making all the right calls since he got there. Rossi’s ego destroyed the team in just two seasons. They went from fighting for 4th to 9th. But they’ll recover with him gone.

It’s slightly untrue about why Alpine’s engine isn’t as good. From about 2019 onwards their engine was good enough for a championship IF the chassis was good enough. By 2022 they were on par with everyone else. The other teams however, still developed their cars through the “reliability” clause in the rules. Renault just couldn’t develop like the rest of the teams in the engine freeze. It still should be noted that the engine deficit they carry is no way near as bad as the chassis deficit.

Each departement is reporting to CEO and the Board of Renault group, and not the Team Principale.
