One of the huge things you missed is how long League's artists spend on their work and that it's a collaborative effort. Some of them post timelapses of their work. One of them posted a FAQ about their process. They say between 40 to 80 hours on a splash art. With all the work (thumbnailing, research, thinking, starting over, etc.), so about 100+ hours with the overall process taking 4 to 5 weeks. So those 10 to 30 hours you mention in the video, well, it just isn't enough time. On top of that, they have art directors to guide them along. This one piece in particular, the artist said they got a paintover of their work back to improve the composition. They also credit two art directors and the League Splash Team on the final polish. So not only are you spending less time, you're probably going it mostly alone. It's a very unfair to compare yourself to that, and I'm happy you realized it.

Never knew how long it takes riots artists to make what amazing things they make. Definitely makes me feel a bit better about my own art so thx for sharing this 😊

There are some cases of an entire studio working on one piece - one person for the thumbnails, one person for the preliminary drawings, one for the rendering and finally one for the SFX, and that's ON TOP of the guidance of art directors. The point of the Riot inhouse Splash team is a bit off, however, as they only handle the image *after* the artist has finished it, as you can see the original version submitted, and the in game Splash edit version from the Riot inhouse team, showing a variety of difference (mainly the removal of texture and brushwork); realistically, someone who plays the game will only see the in game version, but it still should be clarified IMO.

Art style is something ive always struggled with :( personally, i have more of a cartoonish style, rather than an anime or realistic one, and that has given me the incredibly flawed mindset of feeling inferior just because my style isnt as detailed or extravagant. That being said, I do love seeing other people's art styles no matter how realistic or cartoony it can get. Although it has been a long time since I've animated since my fixation is on genshin, I would say that I'm still into art as a whole. I never knew how developed the LoL art style even was in the first place. :o

I feel like that sometimes too. I’m kind of a perfectionist with my art which translates into wanting to do excessive detail, but a lot of my style was adopted from My Little Pony G4 which doesn’t have extremely detailed designs, obviously lol. I don’t hate my art style, not at all, and I’ve managed to find a balance between my style and a lot of detail, though with characters that are mostly one solid color it can have some extra colors I didn’t intend but I did it that way just so the design is more visually interesting. Double edged sword 🤷‍♀️

I played it for 7 years. I started around season 1, so I experienced the early days of the game, before meta became a thing and I saw how this game evolved and I have to say. This game can be great, but Riot just ruined all the potential it had. Only way to play it and have fun is if you have 4 friends to play it with and be ultra casual about it.

Well, actually League splash arts are done by multiple artists and the artstyles are very different in each one. I'd even say I find some ugly, while the others are stunning. (And I'm not talking about old splash arts, I'm talking about the ones released last 2-3 years). But yeah switching to realistic proportions if you want to be an anime artist isn't a good thing either.
@Kokose
@Kokose Жыл бұрын
yes and no. They are in fact done by different artists, and it's always entire team of like 50+ people giving you feedback every step of the way on everything everyday, but also they do hold a very unique style to them. Like they are obviously absolutely fantastic quality but if you look at for example splashcards from smite you can tell the difference, if that makes sense. So league of legends has developed for their desired style something special - you just know that you're looking at league's splasharts. There are fanarts around the internet where artists attempt at replicating simmilar style and mood - some of them really get the essence of what riot always tries to keep in the splasharts, and I get tricked sometimes thinking that i am looking at leaked content.

When you switch to realistic, it helps lay out how skull alignments and how the body moves. Anime in general uses human anatomy and has the artist alter things to fit their style, but they have been proven to try realistic first and extend from there. So that was automatically an F for a fuckin failure, nice try.
@wolfgangd3653
@wolfgangd3653 Жыл бұрын
@@anglepsycho Yeah true, what I meant was this weird kind of mix of her style with semi-realistic. But I stand with opinion that to do both semi realistic and stylised character drawings it would be better to actually do anatomical studies, not just trying to figure everything on your own by looking at someone's art even if it's as good as League's art

@@wolfgangd3653 And like League? They have had horrid splash art. Like Catelyn's but her neck is snapped to show as much titty as possible for some reason even when she's aiming her sights.

@@anglepsycho I barely notice anything odd about her neck, I think it's on the right place, just appears kinda short and the arm seems very long next to it. Her face is kinda ugly in it though. But as I said, it's drawn by different artists some their arts are better, some worse, I still remember Lux splash art with two left hands, but still it's pretty hard to find art as anatomically accurate, with right form and beautiful rendering without anything odd about it nowadays on the internet

It's a little misleading to say the game ruined your art when the game (and the people that made it) did nothing other than have good art. The title of the video had me assume the game (or more specifically the artist that worked on the game) had actively done something to ruin your art like tracing it, stealing it, copying it, etc. It would be more accurate to say being too critical of your own art (which is very common), extended exposure to art made by artists seemingly more skilled than yourself (you would not most have had such problems with your art style if the League of Legends art had been done by a small individual artist and shared on their social media) and the shear human need to compare what we do to what others do (and comparing the quality of the end results). I would have titled the video something like "My relationship with League of Legends ruined my art" or "Me and League of Legends: the combination that ruined my art". I'm not a KZbinr so I don't know how effective those titles would have been compared to your title, but I feel like they would have represented the contents of the video (which was very well made and interesting to watch) better. Overall despite the slight feeling of relief (that someone had not done something bad to you) and disappointment (because while I dislike people getting hurt/generally wronged, I somehow like watching/listening to the drama unfold) after watching the video, I enjoy hearing about your experience and I'm glad that you have used the experience to develop as an artist.

Actually KDA is really good too. Even if you hate K-pop you have to admit they're doing good job at making different kinds of music. Event music has been great so far, their art is awesome, let's not forget a huge animated series hit Arcane. Everything around this game is really good, just not the game itself. Thankfully I switched to ARAMs they're a bit better, I may completely switch to LoR or TFT in future though, less toxicity but same characters.

Sounds easy enough to say in a KZbin comment but it’s a psychological problem most artists can’t just shake off. It’s a hurdle that I feel even the most experienced artists will face and that’s ok. Envy and jealousy in the art world is common yes, but it should motivate you to incorporate what you like in better artists work and push your own creativity. Be jealous but don’t let it halt your creative process. 😅It’s how I managed to get where I am art wise lol

Something I tried which ended up helping me form a consistent focus lens is something called the Triforce of Influence. A list of 3 different artists as follows: First Triangle: Artist you're most inspired by Second Triangle: Artist you aspire to learn from Third Triangle: Artist that isn't really related to the other two but one you feel is equally impactful for you. Then in the center, insert a piece of art you've made! Whenever you feel lost or unable to find focus, look at your Triforce and make sure to think about why you like one thing and how it helps you. It's also worth noting that it helps to make some bullet points for each artist so you can get a better understanding of what you value in an art style or draftsmanship.

This might explain in general mass copy and past we see in any industry, particularly the art and entertainment one. People see something they like and or seems to be successful, and then run with it. And by run with it running it to the ground. Be it Disco, Hair Metal, Nu Metal, to use music, or the state of most adult animation being a copy and past of Family Guy without the heart (I am not even a fan and even I can sat it has some). Or the so called Moe Blobs in anime or how a lot of anime is some form of Isikei power fantasy built on RPG rules (come on you cowards, make a 40k Isshiki). In your case, I can see some similarities with my own issiues with both Spectrum and ADD where once you latch on you bite on like a pitbull and don't let go, and oh there are birds singing in the new day all of a sudden.

Game art from triple-a studios is highly refined. It takes years and many many artist to reach a standardized process of art makin for a game such as League, through countless design/redesign. This is called the art-production-pipeline. Most official League art is the final version of what is published publicly from that pipeline. I bet that were you to look at early concepts of the game's art it would differ from current ones, like day n night.

As a highly addicted LOL gal who is autistic, I still love this game. Like, LOVE it. I even have a Jinx pop figure! Even though I liked most of the characters, the art style is very difficult to achieve without having a realistic style. My last sentence includes a advice: don’t EVER compare your art to others art you want to achieve. It will make you doubt what you already have worked years for, and hurt your self esteem. You can take some small steps to improve your art by looking on what you like, and if or how you want to improve by looking at others art you like. Like lighting, autonomy or detail and add it into your drawing! :)

as a former league player I was already interested by the topic, but hearing about HOW their splashes is created is a huge eye opener. I think it's far from an unpopular take to assume that one of League's strongest pros is its different creative departments; it feels like knowing a very juicy secret from the cool person you (used to) look up to. The idea of kitbashing a small metric fuckton of references together and then painting over it is a genius tactic, and one I think I will definitely be using for a piece I actually need to work on this weekend. This is huge! Thank you so much for sharing this information and your experience. Style comparison is real (and why I can't be on twitter for more than 15 minutes) - A former Kled main

Yes, if one is smart and determined enough one can selfteach everything, but institutions and mentors typically have good practices already so learning from them you dont ever have to relearn something you learned wrong. I had to relearn how to write because no one ever taught me how to hold a pen properly, it was only when others said their hands didnt hurt after writing a page that I thought to try to hold the pen like they do.

Aye, League XD I started playing in late December last year and promptly stopped after entering several consecutive matches of nonstop belittling and bullying for simply being new and inexperienced at the game XD I would usually say it’s not a big deal except I’ve noticed that I’m hesitant to play multiplayer team games like this now Ex: I’ve recently been super hyperfixated on Identity V, reading about the characters, watching the pro tournament livestreams, following IDV creators, etc But I’m so terrified to actually play the game, not because it can be stressful or scary, but because I don’t want my Survivor teammates to be grilling me in postmatch for playing like shit 💀 Bottom line, uhhh League ruined my life in just a week lmfao The true LoL experience

Hearing about how industry artists do references feels really validating bc I handle references in a similar manner! I use my references to capture the gesture of the piece than fill in the blanks from my imagination as much as is reasonable depending on how much of the reference I’m using to figure out where things need to go color lighting etc.

this reminded me this story on how League took part in MY art: so basically i started playing in 2019 august and i ofc fell in love with the splash arts, cinematics, music etc etc... and as neurodivergent i am i also started a major obsessions with a few champions. Mostly the darkins, especially Varus. Now here comes the problem: NOBODY at Riot cares at all about Varus. They had a "rework" in 2016 where Riot updated their backstory and updated their splash art and that was it :'D this was also an important step in like adding LGBTQ+ rep. in LoL aswell, but years have passed and no new content just a champion who claims to be gay but still has a model and says voicelines that are 11 years old by now (the game itself is almost 14 years old 💀) and on top of that they get an epic skin every 5 months where they are the most basic, non appealing character anyone could possibly make (for example PROJECT:Varus where they are just a dude in a robot suit sitting on an ad board w a bow) Meanwhile all this my obsession w them just grew and grew and i kept drawing them, playing them, talking about them CONSTANTLY and made redesign ideas, voiceline update ideas (mainly roasts to Aatrox bc of the memo thing) and even new ability ideas even tho i have no experience in this at ALL in all hopes that Riot one day makes an announcement video that is like "yoo we are a bit late w reworking old champs but here yall now" (i mean it kind of happened bc Fiddlesticks for example got a nice FULL rework i love) but abt Varus nothing happened except a whole ass discourse from players about "is Viego their straight replacement or not?" so yeah this went to the point i quit the game bc it was too boring listening to the same 5 old voicelines and awful, outdated playstyle that was behind a pretty splash art.... but i didnt stop drawing them AT ALL. i still have multiple sketchbooks filled w them (and maybe Viego bc i ship them together >:D) and i ended up abandoning all my ocs nor other things i usually drew before all this

I've seen that little reference technique recently as well, and I've got to say it's a very creative way to make references, but I might not do it myself just because I'm so used to taking reference pictures, and my imagination can do a ton of that heavy lifting. (like, for pete's sake I draw stick figures most of the time when I want to plan-out how I want to pose all my characters before even taking reference pictures of myself doing those same poses) Though, I can see myself using this reference techniques for making environments and landscapes since that could save a lot of time compared to drawing quick sketches or even making a 3D model of the environment

As I am now I'm good but not that good but I already have a leg up as I've established two art styles being manga/anime and realism. I have the values, lighting and colors from realism and the action, composition, and design from manga. For now I just sorta need to figure out how to merge the two styles and also start studying more environment and architecture.

Honestly as a League player,if you’re into card games then i’d recommend the lol cardgame (LoR),it’s got many of the characters you already love (or hate,but at least you’re familiar with them lol),almost every card is voiced and each card has a GORGEOUS splash-art that at least imo are often better than the splash-arts in LoL And it’s just a fun game with a non-toxic community and a casual gameplay with amazing quality. I’d say that if you like card games then it’s way better than League,and again,the card arts are jaw dropping,like just take a look at the care "eclipse dragon" for example,and that’s just one of MANY beautiful cards in the game :) [Also i hate how much i relate to you lmao 😭,started off as support,and even though i still often play support now i also play adc,mid and top,so i don’t just know the frustrations of a support player,but also every role besides Jungle lmao 😭) (Pls send help someone stop me from playing League im addicted 💀)

We just gonna say : what a great marketing strategy, mixing art with league of legends and saying how bad is LOL for the community knowing everybody will agree and come around to comment your video. ME, a person who does not watch your video yet, just read the title.

I also played League for about 4 yrs since 2016 i think that was pre-season season 5 where league changed how the map look and Illaoi was released at that time. my girlfriend's friend introduce me to this game and when i first saw Veigar that sparkled my eye (he's also my main) because he reminds me of my fave FF character Vivi. also the skins and splash art in league also got me as well. and then I saw the game mode "rank" which is my friend didn't warn me about because they were inviting me to play with them. I got into gold at that season then plat tbh I was going to quit the game back at 2017 and focus on my art career but the game sucked my soul because of how my competitive blood is thirsty for striving for more rank up. and then my friend introduce me to e-sports which also got me into it and had a stupidest decision ever to give up my art career and just become an e-sports player but my dad talked to me about it and made me realize that its pointless to be an e-sports player. 2019 hits and I hit Diamond rank and also joined a local league team but I had a bad experience with them because of how toxic they're and how toxic league players are in general including myself as well. also game gave me a mental problem, made me broke up with my girlfriend, ruined my career, and everything. 2020 came and Covid-19 also came across the world and made me realize to quit the game fully and me go back to doing art again. tbh i feel super regretful when i realize that I only need is dedication and patience towards improving art. Now I'm fully back and focusing on my end goal to improve and improve. ( i still played league actually from time to time because this game is like a demon that whispers in your ear like a f*cker) It kind a gave me an injury back at Nov but now I'm doing fine I can still draw. I uninstall league because the game is more worst than ever and it's absolutely a dead game. I'm just really glad im over with it and I'm more focused on my end goal to be a pro artist.

I play Wildrift and i love their free character models. It has positively impacted me since I don't necessarily have an art style and I'm currently working on semi realism. I just play the game for too long

The only thing to dislike about the video is that the sponsor is only 1 , a good one, skillshare. But I expected her to be sponsor by league of legends :P

I'm an anime artist who can't actually draw realistic art... However i do have multiple styles and i wished i was more consistent honestly. Also I think that Celestia has improved a lot in their art 😍

I disagree! Back in the 90's I did the same thing with anime that wasn't actually done by people but computer generated but i didn't know this. I aspired to do as good as them believing "if they can do it so can I" and it drove my art ability to an exceptionally high quality, and Obviously you've done the same.

I purposefully changed my art style to make animation easier and quicker. I figured out that animation is hard whenever you put details into how you build your character in a drawing. I went from full sized characters to chibi-sized characters b/c of the afore mentioned reason and I think it looks cuter. Now my characters are sketched from a circle or ellipse for a head and a bean-like shape that represents their body. The bean shape also helps me add dynamism to their movements and poses.

do you think the same approach is done with Yu-Gi-Oh cards? The art style is also very well done (although, is more anime style than semi-realism) But I don't doubt that they have to work with strenuous delivery time schedules in order to release the next box set of cards

What ruined your style was your perception of it not the game, Its like if I said that your art ruined my style because I was comparing my art to your anime styled drawings, anyway I'm glad you are settled with your style now

I didn't expect that a video about a game I have never heard anything about would end up teaching me a very valuable lesson on how to make healthy art comparisons. So, thanks:)

This video has made me realize something about how I make art, I don't want it to be good, I want it to be impressive. This can't be a healthy way of thinking about it, thanks for helping me realize this!

This hits so hard as someone who flops at any art style other than pixel art. I have a friend who is a phenomenal cartoon/anime style artist and I sometimes feel bad for looking at her work and getting jealous/feeling inadequate about mine. Really is important to not think of it that way, and recognize that it's perfectly okay to stick to an art style you like and are comfortable with even if it's not what's typically seen as the highest art form or most appealing in whatever metric you're using to compare them.

Artstyle/burnout/way too long of a comment rant warning This has probably been an issue I’ve dealt with a while now too. I have a much more cartoony style but I feel like I’m trying to force it to be more realistic. I’ve scrolled Instagram admiring others drawings and more semirealistic styles and I’ve just kept screenshotting them and trying to understand how they draw the facial proportions, but it just feels so incredibly difficult. It’s not in my muscle memory and I don’t have the same Inspirations and experiences as those artists. now recently I’ve barely managed to draw anything I could call acceptable. It feels like my skills have stagnated and now I can’t improve even when I try to “practice“ by struggling to draw a head, face or the cursed ears that always look wrong no matter what. (No wonder I like drawing my oc that wears a mask and that’s ears are conveniently covered by hair) There was a time when I got addicted to minecraft when we had a server with friends and I basically didn’t draw at all for at least a month, and when I did start drawing again it felt like I had forgotten absolutely everything I knew. I couldn’t draw anything I didn’t want to print out and burn right away. Ever since that I’ve been afraid to take breaks (I’m starting to think that maybe it was a somewhat bad idea) , and now drawing feels more like an addiction than a fun hobby. I’m pretty sure I’ve been doing it almost every day. Now I’m convinced that I’m just completely burned out, and I need to take a long break.

I made the mistake of trying to draw again and looking at my old drawings. I remember that I was struggling with this back then as well but I didn’t mind it as much. I pretty much instantly got this exhausted tight feeling back
