Vistaraku, a company based in India, makes biodegradable plates and bowls from the leaves of the Palash tree. The leaves have natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties, which make eating from them a sustainable and healthy option. Madhavi and Venu Vippulancha started Vistaraku out of their love for nature. Each of the plates and bowls are made by women from Siddipet, Hyderabad, and Thimmareddypally.

I remember my father mockingly speaking of my maternal grandfather as being cheap because he arranged their wedding food to be served on leaf plates. (The woman's family organizes the wedding in India.) And he (my father) would brag how he had to save face during the reception by making sure food was served on "proper" ceramic plates with cutlery. At that time I would laugh at that joke because to my childlike mind serving food on leaves was a "low class" thing to do. But now I am an adult who can think for myself and this video just reminded me how narrow-minded some people can be. Leaf plates and banana leaves have been used for centuries to serve food in India during traditional functions like weddings and religious ceremonies. And in this age, where use-and-throw habits are literally destroying the planet, I can see how this shift can be enormously beneficial. It will allow human beings to slowly transition to a more eco-friendly lifestyle without making it too difficult to adapt to. 😊

@ganesh mourya is right ...I being brought up in delhi remember eating all kinda a chats , kulfis , amd those lovely gulab jamuns in this with a wooden 'tila' (spoon) this was all that was affordable for the poor roadside stalls later 2000 onwards plastic plates became cheaper and accessible and flooded our markets sadly the trend has caught on as it is APPARENTLY MORE hygienic !

It's pure culture appropriation. What a criminal activity it is. Western are talking credits of hindu's culture by pronouncing it as your invention. It's pure culture appropriation. They are literally claiming that it's their invention. Westerns tried this trick for yoga also but they failed. They should stop before hate increases. Also turmeric milk, ghee which is clarified butter, Neem.

It requires a semi air and water proof packaging if it needs to be shipped. It can attract insects or start degrading if it's in constant contact with the elements. We just have to look at like a minute amount of shrink wrap is replacing a LOT of plastic.

Cotton cloth or paper bags can be a good substitute for packing the plates instead of plastic. If the cotton cloth can be stiched to the exact measurements of the plates something like a pillow or cushion cover, the plates will remain snug while transportation. Similarly they can be wrapped in paper. In our villages, such plates are tied up with twine from banana or thin coir ropes to carry for one place to the other but I can understand if it has to be shipped internationally it needs better packaging. Try cloth or paper, I'm sure it will work.

It is called as Pattl in some parts of India (Bihar,up,etc.). People are using these plates from ancient times. 40-50 years ago we were forced to stop practicing our eco-friendly culture by calling uncivilized from so called civilized Westerns. But this is our era. World is slowly recognising the importance of eco-sustainable living 🙏🙏. Let's make them realise that we were not uncivilized.
