Pixar always seems like this company that has to juggle pushing the CG animation technology forward and simply making a good story, and sometimes they just prioritize "technology" instead of making a proper story because it's easier to impress people that way. You can be sure, regardless of how well this movie will be received by audiences, that young adults in animation colleges will be obsessively discussing on ArtStation and Polycount how this movie pushes the technology forward even if it's just the rigs are 5% more complex or it renders .0001 second faster per frame on average. And they will think the tools are fast and easy enough now to start trying to make their own "Toy Story" feature films all by themselves in Blender only to learn the hard way that, as always, massive corporations with massive budgets and teams are the only ones that can feasibly animate with high-poly CGi in a reasonable time frame without burning out (most of the time...), and in general animations only get to see the light of day when at least 2 or 3 people are dividing up the workload. TOTALLY not speaking from personal experience from my college days...

You'll get to see buzz talking to a very young mira nova during a misson to protect the royal family; you'll see warp darkmatter slowly being manipulated by zurg and even zurg himself slowly growing a hatred towards his son and revealing a few things along the way. Throw in some references to the LGM making an experimental robot in the background (the first one, not X.R.), and a whole lot of adventure.

I need to talk about how badly this movie completely and utterly botches relativity... See, the faster a ship goes, the slower time goes... ON THE SHIP. Not outside of the ship, but the writers consistently treat it as "the ship slows down the faster it goes" See in order for faster than light travel to work, it must somehow cancel out or circumvent relativity. The TL/DR of the lightspeed barrier is "time slows down on the vessel appreoaching the speed of light, if it were to go faster, time would actually reverse on the ship" so you need to find a way in the universe that undoes this, like warping space, or wormholes, or bridging space, or hyperspace... something like that. So the obvious thing is "oh the crystallic fusion failed, so he wasnt able to break the lightspeed barrier" thus why his trips take 4 years each. But... then the fix it, and the ship then takes 22 years to complete its trip. Which... they consistently show "the faster the ship goes, the longer it takes to reach its destination" which is so incredibly, completely, and utterly ridiculous. Time should only slow down for buzz. Also... Buzzes trip around the sun this planet orbits, is supposed to take 4 minutes according to his ground crew... it takes four years... assuming he hit near light speeds, that means the planet is likely at least 3/4 lightyears away from its own sun, roughly the same distance we are from goddamn Proxima centauri... Then the creators have the balls to create a behind the scenes video (which shamefully never mentions the cartoon), where they claim they did the science research... they fucking didnt.

The Three Caballeros was made in 1944 which meant he was on the team working on it around the early 40's which likely means he'd probably left the company by the time he sent my mom the audio reels so his time there was when Walt was still alive and well. You know, if this really WAS the movie that Andy saw in 1995, you'd expect it to be full of ham and cheese in many spots, have James Horner's-- er, Alan Silvestri's soundtrack, use more practical effects and weird CG elements, and have Evil Emperor Zurg be an unapologetically evil villain. Then again, it would also be unapologetic with the values of the age as well. Sure, it would probably have some adult lines that would fly over my head, but that's what would make it more brilliant when rewatching it. I grew up in the '90s. He responeded on Tweeter to someone saying: "Not quite Lightyear inspired cartoon series Buzz Lightyear Star Command Toys were produced off the cartoon designs" Angus McLane, on April 23 2022 responed to that tweet: "This is correct" And that's not all, in a Q&A, before movie release, he also said: "I imagine this was a movie that then later there was the spinoff cartoon, and then the 'Toy Story' toy was made off of that cartoon design. Because that very much was the way it would be in the '80s and early '90s, that there would be a big-budget movie, like a serious movie, and then would get ported to a TV show." So, yeah... according to "Lightyear" director, the Toy Story toys were based on "Star Command" cartoon, and not directly on this movie... So this movie is even more pointless.

honestly, when they aired the first 2 or so trailers, they said that the movie was going to involve "the real Buzz Lightyear"; see, my mind was thinking it was going to be a semi-biopic of the actual Buzz Lightyear as a stand-in for Buzz Aldrin, where he was simply a NASA pilot who was a guinea pig where he accidentally becomes the first person to achieve FTL travel, however NASA probably thought he died before he appears in the future to people who discover who he is. maybe they'd just pull some Meet the Robinsons'-esque BS and have the city's president be the son of the captain manning Buzz's ascent into space initially but was honestly cushy/incompetant. SOX would've been a spy who actually desires the fuel on Buzz's ship, which then leads to Zurg. movie would've ended with Zurg indisposed, and Buzz travels back in time to the present, just a few seconds after he initially leaps, the father would be arrested due to espionage and Buzz would be hailed a hero of both timelines. this would lead to the Real Life/Toy Story timeline going as-is; just with the real Buzz giving fantastical ideas to animation producers to create the actual cartoons, using inspiration from his adventure. while the Lightyear movie timeline just jumps forward a few hundred years, probably random people adopting the names Buzz or Lightyear, and Zurg would probably become entirely robotic; leading to a Disney+ continuation of either the movie, or the cartoon, they could go wild.

I think they're trying to stay distanced from Star Command because they don't want an older, superior product to be around to make people confused and/or think "gee, we could save money and just watch the original." It's the equivalent of starting the live action Transformers with Michael Bay saying "by the way, there are cartoons of this that are much better."

How does WALL-E, another Pixar outer space-ish movie set in a future where the earth is literally garbage, somehow manage to look more appealing that this dirty, dingy film that's had all the color sucked out of it? Trust me, I was there in the 90's, they made some *goofy af* looking kids movies... if they'd have just leaned into that decade more and had a little more fun with it, it could have been a great throwback sort of movie, but instead it just ends up looking like Disney's gritty "grownup" 2020's live-action remake of one of their much better animated films. It just sucks that a Disney/Pixar movie is *finally* being allowed to show some decent LGBTQ representation, representation that they can't just quietly cut out overseas, and it's wasted on a movie no one asked for or really seems to care about.

Pan's review of Lightyear is genuinely the best one I've see by far . Many of the other reviews were stuck in very superficial stuff, a lot of "I liked because it's a neat scifi flick" or "I don't like because it's mediocre and the twist is dumb", while he actually gave good explanations behind his feelings and what could've made the movie more solid... BUT his joke about the plot twist is the most perfect thing in the video it had me laughing way too loud for a good minute, to the point my brother even came to check on me to see what it was THE HASHTAG

Oh Another thing I liked about his review is his mention about how Disney appear to have some weird hatred towards the Buzz cartoon

He did ignore those Reimagine Tomorrow leaks though.
