Light speed in anime means long enough to fit 5 paragraphs of dialogue, an entire episode dedicated to the villain's backstory, another episode dedicated to the villain's masters's backstory, the flash back to the present where half the episode is the protagonist internally monologuing.

Love this! It's far too common in anime. Also the "I'm about to take this seriously" line after fighting hard and getting beaten down multiple times...and then they start winning, only for the other guy to "take it seriously," and then it just keeps bouncing back and forth between them "taking it seriously." It's like "I'm about to take this seriously" means "I'm going to go up from 1/100th of my total power to 2/100th of my total power," at least until the final 100/100th of their total power, in which case the main character comes out on top or learns a valuable lesson about something.

If the person you're attacking while talking can keep up with the conversation, then its a big sign they can also keep up with the speed of your attack. @@TheStapleGunKid that’s pretty easily disprovable, particularly if you extend “reasonable” attacks to include anime shit. Example: The attack is hitting someone with a moon. You’re in space, can survive there, and fly, but not fast enough to dodge the moon moving 1% the speed of light from 1 light second away. You fly hundreds of miles in the 100 seconds it takes to reach you, but still get hit. And yes, all the real life examples of “see and comprehend a thing and try to dodge but realize you can’t” will be really weird fringe cases where something very fast moves a very long way while being obvious, like cheetahs, or derailed trains in a parked car, or a collapsing wall. Also explosives. Weird shit. Definitely not two dudes squared up throwing normal-human-hands. For sure you should dodge that if you have time to think anything. Just as a general concept, for sure there are situations you can think and still not dodge.

@@PhantomAkira5 and that was even a short race either it was MANY light years, and that was done by barry allen, though wally west (also the flash) is even faster than that with speed feats that are IMMEASABLE. now you asking what does that mean? it means Movement BEYOND linear time. This is why the speed cannot be measured. Given that S = D/T, if T is undefined the speed formula cannot be applied. just to remind you the flash is the guy who changed continuity of the dc comics, and caused the new 52 DC comics continuity . so he is kinda important person to know.

@@TheSquareOnes Yeah, there's even a scene in the original dragon ball where Krillin and Roshi essentially blur for a second and then Roshi just falls down with the action too fast to see for the audience. So they explain that they had an exchange of blows, talked a bit and agreed to solve it with rock-paper-scissors, played a game, then Krillin won - all in a fraction of a second. They are going at light speed, but my theory is that they're miles away from each other and in the time it takes to get to each other they can have a full blown conversation because they can also talk really loudly and have good hearing. I will not be taking criticism at this time thank you. Edit: Thank you so much for all the replies who explained to me that light speed is very fast and that this joke wasn't scientifically accurate. @@wetworkxdomain7214 yes but now the issue is that they are probably not on a planet multiple AU wide, nor are they in a house large enough for light to need to take several minutes to travel from on end to the other. That's like. A house the size all the planets in the solar system x 100 or smt. Not very realistic, huh? Also, let's assume this is all taking place in space, they still can't hear each other because sound does not travel in a vacuum, so they can't be talking in the first place. Just trash anime being trash anime. you realise thats a real thing right? people with near death experience often talk about their life flashing before their eyes. iirc some scientists have hypothesised that its a survival tactic where the brain desperately looks for any piece of information that may save your life in that moment. like people remembering what they saw on tv once about what to do when you get a heart attack when they were young which saved them decades later.

God, thanks so much for capturing this trope perfectly. It's waaaaay too common in anime. Characters will kill 3 enemies with a single sword swing only for them to be like, "oh shit, a SNEAK ATTACK?! Man, there is no way to dodge this, looks like I am in for a world of hurt." and get bodied after thinking entire sentences to themselves.
@khaledm.1476

The main reason why this happens is because most anime is based on manga. In manga there's no inherent sense of time and you can skim through dialogue much much quicker. However when it comes to animation squeezing all that dialogue and narration wastes too much time. P.S for example in anime a flashback could be 1-5mins long while in manga it's like 0.2s

theres no excuse. anime dont have to be 1-1 in manga. he could say all that before he leans in for a punch. and most fights dont have much dialogue. i dont read much manga, but in every one ive seen, ive never seen an intense fighting scene with more than 10 words of dialogue in a speech bubble.

@@bruh.5620 That's not an excuse that's an explanation. For example someone saying too slow in less than an instant, it works because in the manga there's no sense of time. But in anime that instance is extended to 2-3s. Cramming all the dialogue before is also a hassle and doesn't improve flow either. It's also problematic when they're explaining their techniques and the dialogue is crucial you'll have angry fans. Like even some of the best anime productions suffers from this demon slayer, JoJo (JoJo's overnarration is tiring after 6 parts), JJK, Naruto, black clover, bleach, FMAB. P.S Review an exact scene that you don't like both in the manga and anime. Unless it's a toei produced show which screws up pacing (one piece, DB, world trigger), they probably cut down the dialogue a bit
