Mike, I just wanted to clear something up for you. There is no such thing as a reserve "tank". You won't crawl under the truck and find a separate tank with reserve fuel. Even if a vehicle has a reserve amount of fuel, it would simply be an amount of fuel left in the tank after the gauge reads zero. I'm an Airbus pilot for one of the major airlines here in the states. When you hear about an airplane having reserve fuel, it's just an amount of fuel in the tank (usually 45 minutes of flight time) that we don't use except in an emergency. Love these videos by the way. Keep up the good work.

Same with a fourwheeler. The reserve is the same tank but when you run out and turn the petcock to reserve it just draws fuel from the very bottom of the tank.

Pushing okay "OVERRIDES" the truck turning off. So if you pushed "okay" it would have let the truck stay on. I had a 2018 Fusion Titanium and when it would say that I would just push okay and it would stay on.

Hey bud all you have to do is press the “OK” button to override the auto shutoff. You can also turn off the auto engine off in the settings. My 2020 Ford Fusion does the same thing.

What the truck means by "Over Ride" when it says it's about to shut itself off, is it will shut down if no action is taken. If you press "OK" you over ride the system from shutting down automatically and it will keep idling. At least, that's how my 2016 F-150 works. Might want to consider doing the test again if you want more accurate results, because shutting it down and then starting it continuously will drain fuel more than just letting it idle. That being said, you make great content. Your not the only one that wonders about this. :p

Props to you for your patience on this one haha. My guess is that idling doesn't use as much fuel as you think and also the 'reserve' amounts are also more than you think. I guess one idea for the "scientific" way would be to drive it till you truly run out of gas. Fill 1 gallon, and then let idle.

One of the Ford Transit vans I drive at my work has the non ecoboost 3.5L and you can see how much fuel is being used while idling. It uses about 0.3 gal per hour while idling.

I think that this video has proven something very important. In the winter it is paramount to have a full fuel tank when adventuring on the road with winter conditions . It’s was good weather when you did this test, you need to do it when it’s cold with the heat on. I drive an 18 wheeler and I left my truck running over Christmas break, it was -7 at times and I was off for about 110 hours and I used about 95 gallons of fuel. I could idle for about 250 hours if I needed to on a full tank.

For normslly aspirated engines, idle fuel burn is engine size in liters/10 * in gallons per hour. E. G.. a 2 liter engine burns 0.2 gallons per hour. Increase by 50% for turbos.

If I understand it correctly, the vehicle doesn't have an actual reserve tank. When the sending unit that tells the fuel gauge you are empty, you have about 1 to 2 gallons left.

3:36 You haven't read that correctly yet. It says to press OK to override the automatic shut off. On the steering wheel there should be a button that says OK, just press that when that comes on. My 2020 Ford Escape Titanium has that too, when I shut off the start/stop feature that pops up on my display and pressing OK makes it disappear. Also, that is so you don't forget about your car and run it out of fuel and get stranded out in the middle of nowhere like a rest area in Oregon.

From what I understand you shouldn't run the gas tank that low unless of course it's absolutely necessary. The gasoline it's self keeps the fuel pump from overheating.

It's not good to keep your vehicle running idle for extended amount of time. Not for environmental reasons, but cause your car needs to be moving for the oil pump to lubricate the engine properly and to exhaust the fumes properly. Oil pump can only do so much when vehicle is idle. If it's a matter of life and death situation, that's a different story. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

You can go into the settings on the radio go under vehicle an turn the 30 minutes idle off. Just have to do it everytime you restart the veh. But once it's off it wouldn't shut off at all or give you that message.

I think the best way to really gage how big the reserve tank is to run the truck dry like you did then go fill it up. Then run it to 0 miles take it to the gas station feel up at 0 see if there is a price difference and boom subtract add and now you have the difference. I mean when you feel up wouldn’t the reserve tank need to be refilled so that means it should cost more to feel up from empty empty rather then from 0. Of course do it same day or within a 2 day spans just in case the price of gas changes again

Assuming that took you 6 hours to empty the tank, at what you claim 1/4 gal an hour, that's about 1.5 gallons of fuel usage. But if we were to calculate 0.16 gal/hr, that's 1 gallon.

2:50 Reserve fuel tank? No Mike, your Raptor does NOT have a reserve fuel tank. Look it up or ask your Ford Dealership. Most vehicles now just tell you it's empty, so you don't actually run out of fuel or destroy the fuel pump or engine. You probably have an extra gallon or even 2 after it says you are empty, but there is no reserve tank. I still would not recommend driving around on 0 miles to empty because fuel mileage will vary depending on wind and elevation change and load.

There is no reserve tank, it’s just fuel left in the tank when it says empty. It uses a simple float sensor that sends information on how much fuel. It’s a cheap and simple system and when float reaches its max height it says full, and as fuel goes down the float goes down until it gets to the bottom of its travel where it says empty, but there’s still fuel in the bottom of the tank If you press OK as it says you can override the shutoff, you don’t need to switch the engine off and on again

I guess the language boundary of “press ok to override” translates to “I have to restart my truck 12 times” 😂 P.S. you probably still have a 2-3 gallon reserve. The ecoboost burns between 0.3-0.4 gallons per hour. You should have a setting in your dash that will tell you your fuel rate when parked. It’s on my 2020 at least.
