When you were doing the shopping around 2:13 I noticed there were some Taste Me, Dont Waste Me boxes on the stand. I work at a Sainsburys and make them boxes up sometimes. It might be worth you trying one out someday. £2 per box & you can really get some good value in them. It tends to be either fruit & Veg with a best before that has just passed or entire packs of fruit with several days before best before but where the packaging has split, such as a pack of mushrooms, grapes or strawberries etc. As with most things that are trying to avoid surplus food there's no guarantee of what you'll get or if they'll be anything to make the boxes up with. But if they are available & fancy a challenge of making recipes with what's in the box it's worth a try.

Hi Sam, Just for general info. If you find your water bechamel was lacking in richness, you could always add a knob of butter to give it a final boost of flavour. (Since you said it was fine I guess it didn't need it) if folks are living on a strict budget whenever they go out to a fast food joint they can stock up on sauces condiments etc. I was cheering for the flippin Flip! a Croque Oncle Robert. I dunno about the rings-hoops-Loop-d-Loops, we might be verging on another Croque. Cheers from Mexico Jacques

Hey Sam shop at sainsburys for certain stuff cos i prefer it than other shops like some of their taste the difference range is really nice, i know you are on a £10 budget but i suggest if you try the taste the difference curry, its the nicest supermarket curry ive had, sometimes its £4.25 but sometimes you can get it on nectar card price for £3.75, some things in sainsburys are more expensive like some biscuits for example they are more expensive than asda, so i buy them from asda instead, but deffo give the curry a try and taste the difference ham leek potato gratin is also lovely

I like that you use basic condiments, herbs, spices, and pantry items during these challenges. Realistically, if someone doesn't have their act together enough to acquire a basic spice cabinet and pantry, they are highly unlikely to bother even making food at home, never mind searching the internet for meal plans.

Why not charge yourself for example a 5% fee for use of "pantry staples"? That way, you don't have to include the £3 bottle of cooking oil in your budget every time, but you also are being realistic and nobody will complain about it. So for a £10 budget challenge you assume you're spending ~50p on pantry stuff and have £9.50 to spend on the macro ingredients. Even if we have these things "lying around" they were at least once upon a time paid for, and will eventually deplete.

I'm actually gonna applaud you NOT saving that sauce. Canned pasta sauce is usually vile and overly sweet, to appease children. I would've tried frying the pasta hoops up a little with the butter & garlic, to firm them up, then taking them out, cooking the rest of your things, then adding the pasta back in. You can get lemon juice & dijon for under 50p? Wow, we need some price control in the US.
