Fun Fact: humans today are living, on average, about twice as long as they did in the late 1800s, thanks to stuff like medicine and sanitation. But the OLDEST old people on Earth are only living a few years longer than they did a century ago. So something seems to be limiting the human lifespan. The question is, what?

In theory, one could use gene editing techniques to make it so that the body loses none of its repair mechanisms with age, allowing people to live forever, so long as they don't get hurt in other ways. This is mostly a concept for how lone one can live in our current state.
@adams77078 ай бұрын
Yeah, that would be biological immortality. I doubt that we'll achieve this before 2050 but later in this century I think there'll be huge improvement in healthspan and also lifespan. With biological immortality we could live for a few thousand years until some unlikely death becomes a statistical certainty.

I appreciate the focus on qualitative shifts in factors impacting "death rate" as one ages. I'm a little less into the flavor of genetic determinism and teleology - natural selection is a useful tool for thinking about how systems change without intention, and also life is a little more complex than the bubble analogy captures here.

When I was somewhere between 15-18 I looked at age data and figured my generation (I'm 28) would live to around 125 based on improvements in medical tech and other factors. The average age that people die at is slowly rising due to reasons aside from natural selection. My hope is that the younger people living today (hopefully including me) will live to see the day that our lifespans are expanded by a significant amount by some breakthrough. We can then see a rolling effect where each breakthrough lets people live longer and wait for the next, and achieve biological immortality.

This seems to be a lot more realistic than what CGP Grey proposed with immortality and stuff. Also given that absolute age probably won't change much, people are now turning to something called "disability-adjusted life expectancy", which is the amount of years a person can live in good health, which sounds like a better indicator than just life expectancy

We really need to decouple people's notion of biological age from numerical age a bit - due to the way people live and what happens to them, someone might be equivalent to the average person at age 85 when they're 40 due to heavy drug use, etc.. It works the other way around, too - people in their 80s can be cogent, physically active, and have very little impairment vs. someone in their 60s. I think we should come up with some way to gauge someone's "true" age from a health/biology standpoint instead of blindly going by orbits around the Sun - that's good to measure but it doesn't provide the whole story. Perhaps measure telomere length, cell division rate for skin, check DNA for errors against a stored sample from when they were younger, and stuff I'm not thinking of as well.

I wrote this in a reply to another comment, but I'll write it as a top level comment for more visibility, since I think it's important and interesting: Have you heard about bio gerontology and longevity research? Please look up Aubrey De Grey and SENS, he's a pretty well known researcher on this topic. His theory is that old age is basically the damage accumulated by the body over time, and while the body can regenerate some damage, eventually the regeneration capabilities become worse, until it can't regenerate well enough anymore, and it starts getting more damage than it can repair, until death happens. Aubrey thinks this damage is divided in 7 categories, and if we can reverse/repair this damage, we can stop death by old age. You can look it up in his wikipedia article, or watch some of his talks.

@@MinuteEarth at 2:27 well Scrooge McDuck is actually older than Jeanne Calment because Scrooge McDuck is currently 153 years old as of the time I'm writing this comment, and the fact of the matter is many other fictional characters are actually much older than Scrooge McDuck surprisingly Thor is 1,500 years old even though he looks like a 26 year old man, Celestia, and Luna from My Little pony if I had to take a guess what their ages are Luna would be in 2,029 years old, and Celestia would be 2,032 years old, the doctor from the British Sci-Fi show called Doctor who has been premiering on BBC ever since November 22nd 1963 the Doctor was born thousands of years ago and is 2,000 years old (at the very least!) Plus there are even more older fictional characters, but in my opinion the one that takes the cake for the oldest fictional character that I know about is the type Omega civilization mega alien that has multiple alien consciousnesses inside of itself from the My Little pony fanfiction video called send only memorys in which near the end of the video (spoiler alert) the type Omega civilization mega alien literally describes that it took them 2 universe cycles before they were able to develop the technology to be able to manipulate how there universe is going to die in the future, and mind you a universe cycle is 10^10^10^10^10^1.1 power years meaning that type Omega civilization mega alien in is around 3.something something so many zeros later that I believe my electronic device would probably not have enough RAM in order to process texting that many zeros in a single comment that my electronic device would completely crash later... some random number power years old, and seeing as how it takes 10^10^10^10^10^1.1 power years minus the universe is current age for the exact moment you're experiencing right now to happen again in the next universe cycle that means if that type of mega civilization mega alien can memorize the direction, and speed every single atom in the universe, and 100% predict what will become of those atoms in the future then they'll know what the next the universe cycle will look like making them the oldest fictional character to have ever existed. 😅😅😅😂😂😁

@user-hu6pk3zs3i6 жыл бұрын
no it isn't likely a typo because it isn't a misspelling of a word typing braethe would be a typo not knowing that breath is a noun and breathe is a verb is being a moron

Mike Blast gays with tesla's rays Pence 1) Overlooking the E of a word isn't being a moron. It's a typo. It's just missing a letter of a word and it becomes a different word that is slightly similar. Like "Space" could become "pace" because you were in a rush to type it and forgot the "S". 2) You are telling anyone who doesn't have English as their first language they are Morons. Which is racist, not to be a sjw or anything. You are getting agitated over a letter. If you're having a bad day, take it out on Jake Paul or some idiot like him, not an innocent person who didn't notice something small.

Mike Blast gays with tesla's rays Pence Unless "he" has actually spelt it the wrong way *twice* you don't have any definite proof of him being a moron. Likely they were in a rush. Yes, they may have used the wrong word, but no, it wasn't likely to be on purpose that they actually spelt it like that. Like I said, you're getting worked up about a small little error. Grammar Nazis like you need to stop.
