3:08 Well... there is also the angler fish. The male fuses with the female and kinda just becomes a mindless breeding parasite... er... symbiote (I'm not entirely sure which is more applicable). He takes nutrients from the female anglerfish while he provides sperm when he's ready to spawn. This relationship has two side affects: 1.) because they are now inseparable, it gets rid of the need to find any other partner in the terrible blackness that is the angler fish's habitat, and 2.) Because the male is now essentially just an appendage for the female... many of his internal organs and other useless bits like his eyes atrophy and wither away... talk about horrifying! O_O

I took a class from a prof that researched the genes of these hyenas, and she said that it's a byproduct of the excess testosterone. As females have to be more aggressive, their hormones have been optimized for brute strength, which results in higher than average testosterone. Some phenotypes are not evolved for a specific purpose, but rather just an unfortunate byproduct of other genetics.

Males are more aggressive in most species, and this is largely because they produce more testosterone, which is a hormone most intertwined with the expression of aggressive traits (I can share more about testosterone's role in modulating aggression if needed). Female hyenas produce more testosterone than males; not only does this make sense given their dominance structure, but it also explains female's larger genitals. Fun fact about hyenas: Pups taken to another country and raised without mothers still end up forming a female dominant hierarchy, but it takes a while for this system to emerge. This is because it emerges from both physiological and psychological phenomena - higher testosterone levels, as well as watching mom terrorize the males, which these pups didn't get to do.

@@Carla10987654321 Must be some environmental factor. Hyenas are more scavengers than hunters. Females have a bigger role in feeding young than males. Scavenging also means less quality food than hunting themselves. If pups were depended on their weaker mothers to fight for their food with males, it would be bad for their offspring in general. So maybe females had to become bigger and stronger to ensure food for pups. There are not many mammals that live in pack and are scavengers mostly. Cant think of another similar species. There is a ranking order when it comes to eating in all animal packs: first eat the biggest and strongest animals. So a lion pack starts eating from a whole animal and weakest pack members get leftovers. But hyenas start eating from leftovers as scavengers, and the weakest hyenas get leftovers of leftovers... -_-

It's interesting how most cultures define monogamy as the standard mate choosing procedure, but female instinct works by hypergamy and male instinct works by polygamy(explained pretty well why in the second section of the video).

Well, we have long gestation period compared to other mammals, we are the animal with higher birth mortality because of our larger skull. Promiscuous behaviors on women are more problematic or harmful for human women. However we can build deep emotional/psychological bonds with some end up together for life. We are more complex than animals, humans relationships can vary. For what i saw on an experiment, men tend to be more visual & women more picky.
