Thank you Jon, for your ideas and suggestions. I came to these conclusions a few years ago. I finished work 5 years before retirement and came to Thailand. I have bought one and a half Rai of land with a pond, fruit trees and vegetables. I wake up without the stress of work that I had in the UK and just do a little gardening every day. We built a small inexpensive house and we feel relaxed and happy for most of the time. I have followed your advice on many things and my life is simpler and less complicated now. Thank you.

I agree, I think if we had more freedom to do what we wanted instead of what corporations/governments want we’d be more happy as a people. More people would want to go out and explore the world or go out and actually talk to your neighbors. But I think since we are all wound so tight it makes people grumpy or angry towards others and then forgetting their most likely not happy either. If we do the things we enjoy more without the temptation of money we’d all be a lot more happy to be ourselves in the world. Great conversation starter Jandai 👍🏾

I don't have land, but I got someone who owns their home interested and they're gonna let me start a garden at their house. All I can think of is, if I can get this down and make it look good, then I'm gonna take any spare time i have to repeat it at everyone's house that's interested. As I show them how simple it is to maintain and how much food they'll get out of it, they can gradually take over and i can move on to repeat it. Only needing to visit every once in a while to help here and there. The hard part is completing a yearly cycle with people, but I'm determined now because of you. Thank you. Just gonna keep spreading more and more.

I feel jealous of your video, now I'm trying to return to the farm where when I was little I used to enjoy living it. all the time thinking about the future which we also never know. I am 53 years old and have got what I thought 30 years ago. returning to nature is a longing dream. now I'm trying to plant bananas and ginger but it's a shame that only 1 day a week I can do it because it's 80km to the garden. In Indonesia, people retire at the age of 56 from work. sir keep upload the best video .

your 100% right Jon the only way to obtain true living self security" is to build into self sustaining ways , if everyone did this" then there would be less chaos less fighting over money"power" greed" control" that is going on now in the world" and if people self sustained living then the self and combined rewards for their labors would be much more satisfying much more dependable in times of need"

I completely agree with you... And it is an extremely important topic even though we don't want to talk about it. We don't want to face it because it's a harsh reality that it's happening all around us at a scale we've never experienced in our lifetimes. The part that is most disturbing is we are aware yet the best and brightest are not focused I'm dealing with it except to ignore it or even shame people for it. Our priorities as a species is distorted and we need to rethink what is important in life. I truly appreciate your videos and your ability to articulate what I felt for a very long time.

Countries don't need to compete. They just need to develop their own land for an abundance of food. That's it. Bad soil can be renewed. If every nation does that, focus on that, and everybody minds their own business, then the world will have peace.

Namaste' Jon, when I was 18 year old I had the biggest depression of my life. I had felt like my life was meaningless and for a moment I wanted to commit suicide, because I was stuffing my mind with too much memory, like parrots in school, I was eating junk food all the time, living in an a small apartment inside a big and caothic city, already smoking and drinking and I couldn't sleep at night, just as you said. Fortunately I had found a book of the Buddha Gautama Siddhartha, to start making me changing idea about being or not being. It took me many years to get in touch with something so profound inside to make me as joyful, wise and happy like I am today. In short, forgetting the education I had received, deepening meditation, good food, good environment and making good friends, are making me very close to a very easy and ecstatic way of living. Expect when we are willing Mind needs to be empy inside, body needs to be stretched and heart to be conquered. I hope it is useful to you Jon, thank you

Hey Jon, Hope you are well. You touched on a subject that many people don't wish to even think about, like you said its so hard for people/myself to stop or slow down from the rat race that society projects will make us happy. All-day long we are being targeted by the media and everyone trying to get us to believe that we need to buy this or buy that in order to be happy. I work in the health industry and I people all the time who have worked all their lives and still try to work while they are at the hospital due to a heart attack or some other illness its crazy, that they don't realize the life isn't just about work. I believe we need to guide our children and future generations to turn to the arts such as music, painting, dancing and other forms of expression to unplug and get out of the mentality that we need to be constantly producing and behaving as machines. I am 30 now and when i like at my father who is 52 and still stuck on the whole mentality of working himself to death, I stop and question why is it that he's doing it or for what purpose? His house full of stuff, he even bought another property just because he felt as if his old house was getting to small due to all the stuff but now the same thing is happing to the new place. So where does it stop? For a lot of people, they don't realize how precious life is until its all gone. Enjoy your life now, be happy now, the now is all we have. Thank you for all your videos, I enjoy hearing your thoughts on how to simplify our life styles to live a more healthier and more fulfilled life.

I have spent a lot of my time trying to find the root of this social problem & also to find some solutions to survive this mad rat race... I found the following... . Depending on the present world monetary system for our daily survival is the biggest reason for our helplessness & depression... . The moment we start searching solutions to be Independent of this system... like learning to survive or be independent of our Modern Marketing Media, Medicine, Electricity, Currency, Modern Packed Food Culture & Fossil Fuel Consuming travel Solutions etc is a good start for liberation & freedom.... But the actual freedom lays in learning to be able to manage our information intake, our internal energy, managing our time & to invest our actions towards this liberation. Best of luck everyone 😊👍👍👍

My thought is that the mental issues are going to come from inflation more here in America than working to much. It is starting to cost more to live the life of abundance than people in general make. Everything major is purchased with loans. It’s the strain of being under compensated it’s a slow and depressing death.

Bill - I completely agree, I read something on the internet the other day that said that "Millenials" need to start having more babies or else the economy will collapse in the future. But what people don't seem to understand is that the minimum wage has not increased for years but rent, food, and bills just keep getting higher and higher. At the rate things are going they should be paying moms to stay home and have kids, things aren't what they use to be before a man could work and support his household while the wife stayed home and gave love and education to the children now both parents need to work full-time jobs in order to pay the bills. Life for these people becomes more of a burden and it begins to weigh heavy on people causing all sorts of mental problems. I see now why so many people want to numb the pain inside with Alcohol thinking that's a solution. Stay well Bill remember, to take time to unplug and unwind, I have started to reevaluate my life and live a minimalistic way of life cause at the end of the day when we pass away everything gets left behind whether its a fancy car, house, or business. None of that matters in the end except the connections and expressions of Love that you are able to leave on this dot of a planet.

@@SutekhDaSteemroller well a lot of the places are like governed by a community thing that try’s to keep the property values and stuff so people literally can’t do that. But also I have been thinking lately trying to decide if it’s easier to get my resources from nature or from people and economics and for now for me producing my own resources is just not possible and also I think maybe not everyone should be doing farming like some have that gift and some don’t. The meek maybe and maybe they can have the land I don’t know. But it would be cool if I knew more about foraging wild food something to try in the future.

Great point. We live in a society that has to accelerate just in order to maintain the current „quality of living“ this is the case here in the western world. This eternal madness of ongoing acceleration causes unsocial behavior and also depression. Me and my girlfriend are trying to make our way out but it’s difficult for westerners due to regulations and because we have no land yet. We are working on it, gathering skills and earning money to afford land. Establishing farming based communities is a good way to remove steam from the engine. For the people who do have land: please be open to take volunteers and teach them how to grow crops!

Thanks Jon for sharing. I do not think people created the non-stop, growing forever system fully thought that it could be so detrimental to human. I agree in some sense that the model world/engine is designed more from a logical / systematical way to improve efficiency continuously and hence to grow every year. However, this has clearly shown some problems on us mentally and physically. For this exact reason, we need to re-invent our own way and inspire others to do the right things for their soul and mind. Back to basics first.

I agree with you, All of us have Worked So so so so Hard just to get Money because we don't know how to make food Sustainable enough for Us and our Family, I didn't know plant could grow without plow, pesticide, chemical, fertilizer, weeding and all things scholl teach us before Until I See Masanobu Fukuoka done it without those things i were teached that it muss have to create Food, no other way. And never thought earth house can build until i see your videos you building it, you said right, human is still an animal, need food, shelter, daily use and medicine, but the government and the economy like us to have so many things in an easy way to get it, many cars, houses, everyone has so many Money to get everything they want!, but it takes so much time, effort, energy from the world and Competion to all other people, so all of Us have been teached and trained to dependen so much, almost everything in money to a level that without Money you are Nothing!. You can't do anything. And that is the problem of the world right now, just live on money, take the energy from the world to create Money then create artificial food with chemical, unnatural, expensive industry level, people have to concentrate in one place, the house and property price go to sky rocket, spend all life for it, and the policy, laws make build a house on agriculture land... so hard, and so sad...to think... We created more than what we need now, so much grains, fruit, so much castle, pig, poultry, cut down the forest, kill the soil with chemical, poison to create food at industry level, live in a burn brick house needs a tons of CO2 to create. Lacking of knowledge to create what we need daily, buy so much stuff to Desperate void from work, then sickness lately after worked so many long...

Sawade Khap Jon What is clear we go towards a wall. No there will not be a crisis of low energy. We need to reset the current system make people awake and create a different way where people can work enough to get health and food. Minimum reasonable targets is the key point to find. Nowadays people never give themselves a limit on their targets, they always want more more more. This will not bring happiness. Happiness is a balance, life is a balance, we need to be on the middle way (like bouddha says). Kap pun khap

What’s interesting is I never had consistent stress from a job until I started working for myself and my boyfriend on his farm. We have volunteers coming and going all the time. I’m constantly on a volunteer work schedule and taking care of others. I’m never mentally “resting” unless I make it a serious priority. We are trying to find the balance, but first I had to take control of my life and energy by managing my time well and including self care and rest very consciously. It was much easier to do this when I was working for businesses and lived alone. My point is that if you find stress in a corporate job and working for others, it’s likely you will experience the same even if you change environments and work for yourself. Eventually, things can get better. But initially it’s incredibly difficult especially if you’re working with a community that works hard to progress the community. I think it’s important not to have this expectation that changing environments always changes our mental health. It’s a good first step, but there’s much more effort ahead and internally.

Jon, I think that small, self-reliant communities can't stand alone against globalised state-corporate power, so the communities need to join together in an international network. They need to combine their power. The Buddha teaches interdependence. That should be the relationship between communities all over the world. They should not be isolated and independent. And the movement should not become one massive, single organisation, like an empire or the Soviet Communist system. These are the wrong, extreme ways. The middle way is interdependence, where all the communities can live their own way but also share their resources and power to unite against threats from the big powers that just want to eat and ruin everything. When the self-sufficiency movement is small, governments and big companies won't worry much. But when many people become self-sufficient, it takes away power from the governments and big companies, and they react violently. We saw this in Spain when Francisco Franco destroyed the Spanish anarchists with the help of the Western democracies, the Soviet Union and the capitalist corporations--all the big rival powers joined together to stop people from being self-reliant. Normally, western countries, communists and fascists were supposed to be enemies, but they all joined together to stop people from being self-reliant. We need a strong, global network to share power, resources and information. Something like the traditional labour unions, but more. I have many ideas about this.
