And now Kelly is leaving ND and going to LSU. I think we can now officially say there is no longer such thing as a destination coaching job. There might be coaches that are not interested in moving for personal reasons, but for everyone else, there is a price point and program that can make a coach jump.

Not with the transfer portal. I bet the college presidents and the NCAA didn't forsee what a transfer portal would do to their programs or they may have not done that. It seems like the transfer portal is going to allow coaches to gut a program just like corporate raiders do to corporations sometimes. We are definitely living in a dog eat dog world.

Thanks for the content. In these days and times, there is no loyalty in college football. Colleges do not feel obligated to let a coach fulfill a contract if he is losing. The college fires him and buys the contract out. It is a two way street. The coach sees a greener pasture, he'll buy out the contract, and take what he must think is a better job. The question is whether it really is a better job? USC has had a number of scandals, academic and athletic, in the last 14 years.
@johncarlson480
@johncarlson480 3 жыл бұрын
@Chris Smith Only time will tell, Chris. USC has a storied football history which I have followed since Ben Wilson was an All American. However USC did not work out for some like Kniffin and Sark for various reasons. I hope it works out for Lincoln. As for the scandals their importance is in the eye of the beholder. The removal of Deans from graduate schools for serious misconduct is more significant to me than most others. Various members of the athletic department being indicted for allegedly taking bribes to get rich students admitted who would not have qualified for admission probably is a more serious problem to me for others. The payment of players in clear violation of existing rules at that time is probably a more serious problem for me than others. To me it reflects on the culture of the school. By the way, I live in SEC land and have seen similar conduct often over the years. USC is far from the only school with what I would call a scandal in its past.

of course there is no loyalty in the game. that goes for the players as well-these players are now allowed to enter the transfer portal anytime so they can play somewhere else because their original choice did not work out. why should a coach not be permitted to look for another job or simply another challenge? wish Riley all the luck and knowing him, he will probably succeed at USC with some of the OU talent he's going to bring with him. believe it!

People who say stuff like this are usually people who have never done anything in life. OU decide to move to the big time. It's called opportunity, it's what America is all about. Without OU and Texas the Big 12 will be the lowest ranked power 5 conference. The SEC is the number one football conference with the most money and fame. No one in American history who made something happen sat around waiting for it. OU saw the opportunity and took it. Good for them.

And watch his face when he awkwardly says that this opportunity wasn't presented to him until early Sunday morning lol.. then tries to pull over our heads that the assistant coaches that he brought with them he just informed them the night before and without any questions asked they just jumped on the plane and said let's go didn't talk about salaries or anything I told them plane leaves at 6:00 a.m. they were there at 5:40. I'm not sure how many actually believe that or not or if he thinks that that's a plausible story yeah just last night I asked him hey I know this is a Brooke but would you guys want to come to USC with me sure let's go no questions asked right I'm sure it went down like that.. they were trying hard to play it off like they just met each other the previous 36 hrs then reels them all off on the top of his head without skipping a beat like they've been friends for quite a while kind of funny. If it was just a couple names that would be possible he damn near listed the whole staff without skipping a beat. I didn't press myself if I can remember two people's names let alone run off the whole staff first and last name of people that I've never had relationship with until 36 hours ago LOL

Riley was on the decline and he knew it. His play calling was not as good with either quarterback. He's young. He'd been here 7 years. He was literally pressured into becoming the head coach (secretly it had to feel like pressure). It probably was time to move on. The team this year was unmotivated against lesser teams and that's all on the head coach. This will turn out to be a blessing in disguise. Comparing what LR did with the sudden OU-UT move to the SEC is an apple vs orange. LR said on Sunday he was going to USC, then at 6 AM Monday he and the assistants are on a plane heading out. Boom - drop a bomb then scurry away. For the SEC move OU & UT said they were moving to the SEC when their contracts/Grant Of Rights were up, some years hence unless something changed contractually such as a buyout. Plenty of time for the B12 to plan, get replacement teams (now 4 rather the two leaving, to get back to 12 teams). That's a pretty big difference between the two situations in how to handle a break-up.

There are leaks saying Lincoln was talking to SC in April. We are upset, but, not because he left, he set Oklahoma up to be gutted . Now we know why Oklahoma never played good this year. Lincoln wasn't even using a quarter of his play book. We all was wondering why. Well we know now. Lincoln wasn't even going to talk to the team, Stoops made him say goodbye to the team. He was just going to jet. This came from staff. Don't let the fake tears and the baby face fool you. He's been declining since Stoops recruits have been leaving. Temporarily coaches during the bowl game, that's fine. If coward players want to run, start running, we don't need you. The ones that stay have the staff and fans watching their 6, we are family here. We're going to the sec next year. We might be down for a year or two. We will be winners in the sec. You guys had mentioned you wonder when Lincoln Riley made the decision. Well I’m sure he humored the idea ever since the USC head coach got fired. But I think the moment that sold it for Lincoln is simply when OU fans booed Spencer Rattler. I think he took personal offense to that in that everyone was questioning the decision to keep Rattler in even though he wasn’t doing a good job. I think Lincoln felt betrayed by the Sooner fan base. All hogwash. Helton fired in Sept. USC identified candidates and started reaching out in Oct. Riley probably mulled it over for a month or 6 weeks and probably made a decision about 2 weeks ago. Had they won against OK St the announcement would have been postponed until after the championship game. IMHO.
@donross2914
@donross2914 3 жыл бұрын
Agree with you chief. Riley's play calling was suspect for a long time. He had the players but he made a lot of bonehead calls like this last game rather than telling his players to let the ball go into the end zone four times they caught the ball and were stuck inside the 20 and the last time it hit the guy's chest he lost the ball and oakey State won the game. So that was Riley's fault. At least he got us some Heisman trophy wins. But to say SC is a better school than Oklahoma in football I'll be laughing all week on that one they're not even in the same category they're just a Showplace team but never a strong history like Oklahoma forget about it. Oklahoma will get a coach and will be back on track before you know it I don't give a damn what recruits left there's plenty of other good ones out there if you get them coached right and get an aggressive coach you can get it done Lincoln Riley was just too weak for me I never liked his play calling. He used to get a big lead first half and then sit on it, and win by a few points how stupid is that he was looking for the easy way out folks I'm glad he's gone to hell with him he'll be living in the city that has 100,000 homeless people living on the street and trash and 50% of them are on welfare he'll like that I know a lot of big companies that left la because of that Ben Shapiro's company left he said it was so nasty he had to leave he went to Nashville of all places. Maybe he's going to start singing country music who knows I wouldn't go to Nashville but that's him. I'm rooting for my new team since I live in San Antonio UTSA University of Texas at San Antonio they were 11 and 0 lost the last game cuz they didn't care they're going to the championship game on December 3rd they signed a new coach for 10 years who's coached in Texas for 25 to 30 years so we're solid. You think it's a small school it's bigger than most Big 12 schools 40,000 students and growing San Antonio to Austin is the fastest growing area in the country so right now I'm switching to UTSA. I'll always support Oklahoma cuz I went to school there.

OU seems to be in trouble. I agree, the next hire is critical. With decommits, transfers, and the coaching staff gutted, and the SEC move pending (perhaps UT and OU no longer eager for a 2023 start? which could mean overlap with the newcomers) the job is appealing but daunting. OU has a great brand but in the SEC I put them in the middle. LSU, Alabama, Georgia, A&M (and even dumpster fire UT) have stronger brands. Oklahoma is solid but on par with Florida, Auburn, Tennessee. They are going from top dog to second tier albeit in a first tier conference. I wonder if it's really worth it. The move could make other SEC schools stronger at their expense.

They sky isn’t falling at OU, but Riley has been sand bagging all year (likely even keeping plays out of the playbook knowing this was coming) This has been a textbook screwing of your current employer to make your new employer rich. In all honesty it is good to know exactly what kind of person was running the program in Norman. I realize its a business, but the way Riley has done it was more like an attempt to burn down everything he built at OU on his way out the door, thats the difference leaving is one thing but leaving a path of destruction as you go is different thing entirely.

He had to know for weeks at the very least. Didn’t happen overnight. I think he checked out by mid season if not earlier. Oklahoma really underperformed all season. At the end of the day Oklahoma will rebound from the disappointment and move on. The Sooners will go to the SEC and will win their share of games. And Riley can have Grinch. No big loss there. No worries about the staff. The new coach will bring in a new staff anyway so I’m not sure who would survive that change other than Cale Grundy.
@javtimestwo
@javtimestwo 3 жыл бұрын
It happened overnight. If he knew for weeks that would be a violation and USC would be in big trouble for violating a number of rules. After the Bedlam loss, USC contacted Riley's agent to make him aware they are interested. Soon after the 2 began to negotiate and once those negotiations grew serious, Riley decided that leaving OU was the best thing for him. Good luck to Riley 55-10 over five seasons was very, very good. I'm sure at USC he will be just as good or better with all that talent he will recruit to come play for him

I'm not mad in the least bit about this, or how it went down. Like we said during the freak out over the SEC move, decisions like this are ALWAYS made in private. No coach informs his team he is doing interviews during the season, and yet they all do it. Look, Riley wasn't going to be the coach at OU 5 years from now, unless he won a natty. You don't get 10 years of trying to win a natty at a blue blood. That isn't a thing. No coach is bigger than our program. Brent Venables will have us in the post season every year as well.
